Believe it or not, IFR departures can be one of the most challenging parts of an IFR flight. The process of getting safely from the surface over all surrounding obstacles and up into the safety of the enroute IFR structure, all while operating at maximum performance configuration, slower speeds, and high pitch attitudes can be daunting.  The procedures for getting to altitude and established on a route can be accomplished in many different ways, and airports have many different published departure procedures.  How do you know which one you should expect?

In this safety seminar, CFI Brian Eliot will review a few of the instrument departure procedures for local Bay Area airports.  He will deconstruct the published procedures and show the most critical safety items, as well as what to typically expect in common practice.  This program is a must for pilots working on their instrument rating, or working to stay current with instrument departures.

Brian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s Assistant Chief Pilot and resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer, a software developer, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He regularly presents at San Carlos Flight Center safety seminars and has a reputation for making complex concepts easy to learn and understand.

“Ops 1, Ground…” is a radio call heard every now and then at a towered airport like San Carlos. From conducting runway sweeps, to chasing geese away, from fixing taxiway lights, to assisting distressed aircraft, the Airport Operations team plays a fundamental part keeping the airport running smoothly and safely.

San Carlos Flight Center invites Airport Operations Specialist Michael Dutton to give a behind-the-scenes view on what it takes to keep an airport like San Carlos running. This seminar will cover the routine checks that make up the day-to-day lives of the specialists, as well as some of the more special occurrences that operations specialists respond to. We’ll examine the training, equipment, and responsibilities given to the operations personnel, along with investigating safety measures implemented to ensure the airport runs smoothly.

We encourage any pilot to attend as they can now be more vigilant while operating in and around the airport.

Michael Dutton is a commercial pilot with a private rating in helicopters. He’s been flying and working at the San Carlos airport for over seven years, first working for the Flight Center before moving on to Airport Operations. Human body dynamics are complicated on the ground, and really interesting when you take them up thousands of feet in elevation.  The reduction in ambient air pressure can cause various impairments that directly affect safety of flight.

Join an experienced SCFC CFI as they review important Aeromedical Factors such as the four types of hypoxia, the impact of medicines and alcohol on the human body, and how the human eye and mind can be fooled by various spatial and visual illusions.  They will also go over some common over-the-counter medications that pilots might not consider to impair their ability to fly, but may actually be dangerous.

Come and join this online seminar in the ground school refresher series to review the impact of flight on the human body and become a safer pilot.

ForeFlight is a useful tool for many pilots as it provides a number of tools a pilot might need to plan a flight, obtain a weather briefing, and track their flight in real time. Living in a digital age, pilots should learn to use tools like this to enhance their overall flight planning process.

San Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Russell Bowerman and private pilot Brandan Dadoun to provide a walk-through of how they use ForeFlight to plan a cross-country flight. In this seminar, they will investigate what it takes to accurately plot checkpoints, calculate performance values, and ensure that you as the pilot are familiar with “all available information concerning a flight.”  The presenters will start the session with a sample flight mission so that viewers/attendees can follow along in real-time using ForeFlight on their own device.

ForeFlight offers a wealth of features that can sometimes be overwhelming.  We hope you will join us for this seminar to see a practical aspect of this app towards real-world flight planning.

Brandan Dadoun is a Private Pilot and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator. He has completed the majority of his flight training at SCFC with over 200 flight hours and has extensive flying experience throughout all of California in both piston and turbine powered aircraft. He is actively involved within many aviation programs, and is currently pursuing his instrument rating. When he’s not flying, he enjoys playing the saxophone and staying active.

Russell Bowerman has always maintained an interest in aviation, visiting aviation museums, taking sightseeing flights, and staying up to date on all the newest fighter jets and airliners.  After receiving his Private Pilot Certificate in 2018, he decided to make a career of it, attaining his Commercial and CFI ratings. Russell has been teaching and loving it ever since. Beyond flying, he really enjoys travelling and feels lucky to meet new people and learn about their diverse backgrounds in the process of flight training.

Seattle and the Pacific Northwest is a hub of aviation industry and innovation, and what better way to experience this cosmopolitan region than in the air? However, with a major international airport, multiple military bases, and rapidly shifting weather patterns, flying in this airspace isn’t easy to navigate.

San Carlos Flight Center invites instrument rated pilot Travis Bender to delve into Seattle Airspace, the San Juan Islands, and different ways a Bay Area Pilot can reach Seattle. This seminar will break up the complex Seattle Airspace into smaller areas so it can be interpreted and flown easily for any pilot hoping to fly in the region. In addition, we will also discuss proper procedures for many airports, including SeaTac International, Boeing Field, and Renton, as well as how to handle some of the unique challenges of flying in the region, such as terrain and weather. Finally, we will highlight how to fly from the Bay Area to Seattle VFR.

If you are hinting in flying to Seattle in the near future, this seminar will help you get there efficiently and safely.

Travis Bender is a private pilot with an instrument rating in airplanes, and an Upwind Scholarship alumni, who learned to fly at SCFC.  An avid adventurer, he loves flying to new areas and discovering fun places to fly.  Travis currently attends the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, when he is not in the air.

Aircraft records are significant for safety and legal reasons.  Maintenance and inspections are meticulously recorded in more aircraft logbooks, such as airframe, engine, propeller, and sometimes avionics.  Pilots need to understand the details of aircraft logbook entries to validate the airworthiness of the airplane before flight, especially after the plane has returned from servicing.

Preparing for a checkride is one instance where the pilot-in-command needs to know every piece of the aircraft’s airworthiness.  When was the last annual inspection?  If 100-hour inspections are required, when was the last 100 hour inspection done?  Has the work been logged appropriately in the maintenance records.  Are all the airworthiness directives complied with?  Being able to read and interpret maintenance logbook entries is the only way to confirm the aircraft is airworthy..

In this seminar, San Carlos Flight Center Chief Pilot Herb Patten will examine the aircraft maintenance logbook entries and highlight what you need to pay attention to as a PIC.  We encourage any pilot to attend.

Herb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating, has flown over 1,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors.

Flying in the San Francisco Bay area is spectacular, a real privilege for local pilots. The Pacific Ocean, a dramatic coastline, beautiful hills, and many famous landmarks. As pilots, we are afforded a rare bird’s eye view that we long to share with our friends and family.

So what exactly is a “Bay Tour”?  How did certain airspace changes affect the Bay Tour, and what new implementations will require pilots need to take to account? Join CFI Lukasz Zoromski to examine the airspace, explain the “Bay Tour” and how a pilot can accomplish one in the safest, simplest, most enjoyable manner.

We’ll review the various overlapping airspaces in the area, the territories for each local ATC facility, and the routings most commonly used by Flight Center pilots and suggested by ATC.  You’ll learn what options are available to you even if SQL ATIS has the phrase “San Francisco is not taking surface area transitions.”

If you are new to the Bay area, want to imagine the different sights you’ll see, or just want to improve your understanding of local airspace customs and procedures, please join us for this popular seminar.

Lukasz Zoromski has always been interested in aviation. Ever since going to Oshkosh Airventure as a kid, he got hooked on airplanes. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, he decided to make a career change away from a desk job and began flying with a goal to become a flight instructor. Now that he has achieved that goal, he strives to help new pilots achieve the same goals in a safe and fun way. New to the Bay Area, he is looking forward to flying in a new environment and meeting new people.

Is it safe to take off from Truckee with a full load on a hot summer day? Can I make it to Scottsdale with enough fuel reserve? If there is a tailwind in the downslope direction, should I take off upslope or downslope? Can I meet the climb gradient requirement for an instrument departure in the current conditions? All these questions can be answered with the airplane POH, and more and more with the help of modern aircraft performance apps.

San Carlos Flight Center invites Steven Kleiman to demonstrate how to effectively use an app to easily calculate aircraft performance values. Steven is the founder of POH Performance which provides open-source performance calculations for Beech Barons, Bonanzas, Cessna 172s and 182s, Piper PA28, Daher Kodiaks and TBMs. In this seminar Steven will highlight how technology has provided extreme accuracy in calculating aircraft performance in various different situations. Steven will demonstrate, step by step, how to calculate performance values for all phases of flight.

Join us and learn how to obtain more precise and accurate performance values for your aircraft.

Steve Kleiman is a 1600+ hour instrument rated pilot and primary author of the POH Performance apps. He currently flies a TBM 850 single-engine turboprop.

Good pilots are constantly learning through sources of information such as safety seminars, actual flight experiences, or evaluation of others mistakes. We apply this knowledge to our future flights with the goal of becoming safer pilots. For commercial pilot Andy Clark, an eye-opening learning experience occurred after reading the “Killing Zone”, a book that evaluated common safety-of-flight issues that could easily be prevented.

San Carlos Flight Center invites Andy to recount his first 100 to 300 hours of flight – what’s regarded as the “Killing Zone”. Andy realized, after reading “The Killing Zone”, how many low time pilots are vulnerable to serious mistakes that could be avoided. Andy will highlight his own mistakes made as a low time pilot, and how they could have been avoided if he was more aware. Some of these issues include inadvertent IMC and loss of control issues within critical phases of flight.

Andy encourages any pilot to attend as he will share his own safety methods, along with many other safety evaluation models used within professional aviation. You will learn how to recognize potentially dangerous situations that low time pilots, and even experienced pilots might overlook.

Andy Clark is a 2000 hour pilot who first took to the air in 1999.  He holds commercial and instrument ratings with single engine and multi engine privileges. He has flown in multiple countries around the world and made 4 transcontinental crossings including a flight from the Bay to Puerto Rico.  A transatlantic trip is next. He has owned a Skylane, a Piper Saratoga and currently owns and flies a Cessna 340.
