Pilots must pass two standardized tests to obtain a Private Pilot certificate – a test of knowledge on a computer, and a test of flight skills in the aircraft. In preparing for the flight skills test, students can refer to the Airman Certification Standards document which specifies in great detail the nature of the flight skills test and the expectations of performance for each maneuver. However, preparing for the FAA Knowledge Test is more unstructured, as it tests knowledge from any of several FAA publications at various depths and understanding levels.
