Demonstrate Instrument Airplane Pilot Knowledge to FAA Standards

- Pass a 60-question practice test administered by instructor
- Instructor endorses student to take FAA Knowledge Test
- Schedule, take, and pass the FAA Knowledge Test
- Review knowledge test deficiencies with CFI
- CFI endorses student for knowledge test deficiencies
Completion Standards
When complete, the pilot
- has passed the FAA Knowledge Test.
- has CFI endorsement for knowledge test deficiencies.
7B - Practice Checkride Oral
Verify Your Readiness With a Simulated Oral Examination
Assignments
- Plan IFR flight as assigned by primary CFI
Activities
- Complete simulated checkride oral exam with primary CFI
- Complete simulated checkride oral exam with new CFI (optional)
- Follow-up training with primary CFI, as needed
Completion Standards
When complete, the pilot
- has completed a practice oral examination and received performance feedback.
7C - Practice Checkride Flight
Verify Your Readiness With a Practice Checkride Flight
Assignments
- Update IFR flight plan for current weather conditions
Activities
- Complete simulated checkride flight with new CFI
- Follow-up training with primary CFI, as needed
- Schedule test date with examiner
Completion Standards
When complete, the pilot
- has completed a practice checkride flight and received performance feedback.
- has met Airman Certification standards for the instrument rating and is prepared to take the FAA Practical Test.
7D - Final Preparation
Receive Your CFI’s Final Training and Approval

- Total and sign logbook pages
- Review checkride debriefs
- Create IACRA application
- OF Aeronautical Experience Summary
- Review and prepare airworthiness summary for checkride airplane
- OF Personal plan for Maintaining IFR Currency
Assignments
- Review all sections of the ACS
- Review pilot plan for maintaining currency post-checkride
- CFI approves IACRA application
- CFI endorses student for FAA Practical Test
Completion Standards
When complete, the pilot
- has reviewed the Airman Certification Standards and understands what will be required.
- has reviewed prior checkride debriefs.
- has received all CFI endorsements and approvals for the FAA Practical Test.
7E - FAA Practical Test
Demonstrate Instrument Airplane Knowledge and Skills to a Designated Pilot Examiner
Assignments
- Plan IFR flight as assigned by DPE and confirm DPE weight
- Organize books, charts, hood, etc. for use during checkride
- Get a good night's sleep
Activities
- FAA Practical Test (checkride)
- Photo of new instrument pilot
Completion Standards
When complete, the pilot
- is an instrument-rated pilot.
