The FAA Contract Tower Program was established in 1982 to lower the operating costs of air traffic control towers at some lower-volume airports by having decreased staffing levels provided by private companies. The program has since expanded to roughly half of the towers in the NAS. Now, across the Contract Tower Program, we’re seeing staffing crises and decreased service.
Join SCFC Owner Alessandro Franco as he discusses the steps (or lack thereof) that the FAA has taken to address these issues. We will compare staffing levels between FAA towers and contract towers, seeing how different staffing levels may provide different levels of safety and service. We will also explore inspector general reports and previous assessments of the failed program.
Tune in to learn about some of the safety concerns operating at airports with contract towers, how to stay aware, and what you can do to encourage the government to address the problems.
