SUMMARY:Understanding Cessna 182 Systems
DESCRIPTION:For a private pilot who learned to fly in a C172 Skyhawk\, stepping up to the Cessna 182 Skyland is a good challenge to broaden your skills. The larger engine allows you to take more passengers and luggage\, and cover longer distances faster.  As a natural extension to the Cessna 172\, the Cessna 182 shares many operating similarities and most find the transition smooth.  However\, Skylanes have some differences in engine and powerplant that require more attention.  Pilots checking out in the C182 must learn to manage the constant-speed propellor\, and factor in the greater torque and increased need for engine temperature management of the later six-cylinder engine\, and learn to use and additional engine cooling tool – cowl flaps. \nSCFC invites in Travis Bender\, CFI\, to introduce the Cessna 182 systems to pilots\, particularly those looking to transition from the Skyhawk. You’ll walk away with a good foundation to start earning your high-performance endorsement\, while also learning what it takes to get checked out in the Flight Center’s 182 fleet. Attending this free seminar is a great way to reduce the ground training time with an instructor that you’d need as part of an aircraft checkout. \nJoin us if you’re interested in the next level of Cessna aircraft\, and looking to get to your next aviation destination a little faster and with fewer stops. \nTravis Bender is a CFI and CFII at San Carlos Flight Center. He earned his primary certificates right here at SCFC and now conducts training for student pilots through Flight Instructors\, as well as high-performance checkouts and mountain training. Prior to instructing\, Travis worked in sustainable procurement for a large Silicon Valley company.

SUMMARY:What I Learned about Rudder Coordination in my First 600 Hours as a Flight Instructor
DESCRIPTION:The process of becoming a better pilot never ends\, as SCFC Flight Instructor Henrik Vanitegem found out.  Despite accomplishing his private\, commercial\, and flight instructor certificates\, and accumulating hundreds of hours of flight time\, there is so much more still to learn.  Many instructors find that their own flying reaches a new plateau after the first few years of teaching others.  Something about guiding a new person to what are fundamental flight skills forces you to take a newer\, deeper look. \nSuch is the case for Henrik and rudder coordination.  From his earliest days as a student\, Henrik had been introduced to the concept of rudder coordination\, but it took years as an instructor before he could approach the topic from a new direction.  SCFC invites Henrik to reflect back on this first 600 hours as a flight instructor and give us his latest thoughts and understandings of rudder coordination\, and how to improve the overall safety of your flight.  Don’t wait 600 hours to hear this important topic. \nRudder coordination is a common weak spot for many pilots. In my safety seminar we will look at why we need to use rudder and when it should be used in flight to keep the aircraft coordinated.

SUMMARY:Down and Dirty Logging: A Deep Dive into 14 CFR 61.51
DESCRIPTION:It seems so simple\, right?  Make a record of your flights so that you can prove you meet the FAA experience requirements for certificates and ratings and to you have recent flight experience for carrying passengers.  Of course\, any new pilot quickly learns that there are many confusing details encountered flight logging.  Are logbooks different for private pilots vs commercial pilots?  Do I log takeoffs as well as landings\, or can I just assume the takeoffs?  What exactly is night?  What is cross-country? \nSCFC Senior Instructor Brian Eliot has pulled together a rich presentation that will answer the various pilot logbook issues using FAA regulations and other FAA interpretation sources.  He will discuss the variations between logbook types\, and how electronic flight logbooks differ from paper logbooks. He’ll look at some of the latest pilot tools for automatic flight logging and share whether that is a good idea for you. He will introduce you to the most common columns to include in your logbook for flight training\, and how to log simulator time. Finally\, he’ll talk about the requirements pilots must meet with regard to preserving past logbooks and flight records. \nPlease feel free to bring your logbooks and the questions you’ve encountered in logging your own flights for the Deep Dive into CFR 14 Part 61.51. \nBrian Eliot is a Senior Instructor at San Carlos Flight Center and their resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer\, a software developer\, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. SUMMARY:Getting Your Instrument Rating
DESCRIPTION:Instrument rating refers to the qualifications that a pilot must have in order to fly under instrument flight rules (IFR). It requires additional training and instruction beyond what is required for a private pilot certificate or commercial pilot certificate\, including rules and procedures specific to instrument flying\, additional instruction in meteorology\, and more intensive training in flight solely by reference to instruments. For most private pilots\, the most significant value of flying under IFR is the ability to fly in instrument meteorological conditions enhancing flexibility. Additionally\, all flights operating in Class A airspace\, must be conducted under IFR\, and an instrument rating is required when operating under special visual flight rules (SVFR) at night. Being able to accomplish all this will make you a safer pilot by thinking in terms of safe altitudes\, fine tuning you flying skills\, expanding your options\, enhancing your flow and checklist skills\, and maximizing you cockpit resource skills. Join Flight Center Senior Instructor Derek Vejby in this timely discussion of how and why to get your instrument rating

DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about what happens in the tower at an airport? Would you like to increase your knowledge of how air traffic is managed at the San Carlos airport? \nThe KSQL Air Traffic Manager has offered to host small groups of pilots to meet the tower controllers and take a tour of the San Carlos tower. During the tour you will get to see firsthand how the tower controllers update the ATIS\, keep track of planes arriving and departing\, as well as use radar to help manage the flow of traffic around San Carlos class Delta airspace. \nThe tours are approximately 20-25 minutes in length. Registration is required. US Citizenship is required due to FAA restriction. \nAbout San Carlos Flight Center: \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2023 as a Distinguished Flight School for the third year in a row. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. Our seminars are free to watch when attended in person at our facility in San Carlos but live streaming and viewing recorded seminars are exclusively available to members. Click here or contact an SCFC member service rep at (650) 946-1700 for more information about online access to our web library of over 500 recorded safety seminars and live-streamed content. \nThis seminar will be held in person at SCFC\, attendance is free and open to all. Web Members will still be able to access our seminars online\, both live and recorded. Click here to learn more about the transition. \nInterested in watching more of our presentations? SUMMARY:Full Moon Flyers: Half Moon Bay (Mezza Luna)
DESCRIPTION:On May 23\, make the quick hop over the Santa Cruz Mountains to Half Moon Bay for dinner. The flight is quick from points around the Bay Area but is much faster and less stressful than navigating the traffic on Highway 92. This is a perfect flight to take friends and family on\, as it affords stunning views of the local coastline\, beaches\, and mountains in such a short flight. \nAfter landing\, taxi to the small ramp on the southeast side of the airport (located southeast of the taxiway that takes you to Runway 30). Secure your aircraft\, and we’ll walk through the gate to meet at Mezza Luna at 7 PM\, one of the best restaurants in the town. Enjoy an Italian dinner\, complete with classic favorites like pasta and freshly-caught seafood. \nPlease RSVP below so we can inform the restaurant of our headcount. We hope to see you in Half Moon Bay on October 28th!
