Happy Birthday Flight Center
It's been three years since San Carlos Flight Center opened its doors with a mission to bring together the pilot community. We wanted to create a place for fun, education, respect, and adventure in support of general aviation. Thank you to all SCFC members who have brought your own energy and enthusiasm to the club. This a birthday for all of us.

We've grown a lot in the past three years, and so has general aviation. It's exciting to see so many SCFC innovations trickling into other flying clubs and flight schools around the SF Bay Area. Let's all work together to make the next three years a continuation of the progress we've made. Long live general aviation, and long live SCFC.

Flight Bag Spring Cleaning
Spring is nearly here and it may be time for a flight bag clean up. If so, you may find some things in there you've forgotten about and/or no longer need. Before you discard those unwanted items, please consider donating them to the SCFC Private Pilot Ground School. We are in need of E6Bs, plotters, and expired paper charts. Just drop them off next time you are at the Flight Center. Thanks in advance from the student pilots.

Keep Healthy - Keep Your Medical
You may have noticed some new arrivals to the SCFC club house - bowls of fresh fruit, and Hint flavored waters. With the growing awareness of the negative effects of excess sugar in America's diet, we've added tasty healthier alternatives to our snack selections. The result? They are a huge hit! It doesn't mean we still don't have the occasional sweet treat for celebrations, but consider making a crisp fresh apple a part of your preflight weather and route planning.

Does your flying club love you? We sure do.

Ramp Access and the 3-Foot Fence
Important Clarification: If you're walking to Juliet parking, you have to go down Skyway Road to the pedestrian gate. Because of a quirk in the "Through-the-Fence" agreement between the airport and the owners of the Skyway Building, pedestrians are NOT ALLOWED to walk between the 3-foot fences adjacent to the taxiways (even though there's space between the fence and the movement area boundary). Aircraft and airport vehicles only.

We only just were made aware of this clarification last month. Please help us get the word out to all Flight Center pilots. Take Flighty or walk 100 yards down Skyway Road to the pedestrian gate.

Step Carefully on the Low Wings
We've recently had damage to two of our low wing fleet aircraft - one due to an accidental fall, another due to stepping on a part of the wing that isn't authorized for stepping on. Wing repair is expensive, so please help us protect our fleet and our owners by stepping carefully on the wings of the Cirrus, Duchess, and Pipers. If you're unsure whether a portion of the wing is able to withstand the weight of a pilot, please ask. Look for the "NO STEP" warning that protects delicate surfaces and help your passengers avoid those areas.

SCFC: What inspired you to learn to fly?
I grew up near Barksdale Air Force base in Louisiana. I always loved hearing and watching the planes and looked forward to the annual open houses so I could get closer to them. In 3rd grade I wrote a letter to the base and expressed my desire to become a pilot, and that Christmas the base representatives gave me a special tour. I saw inside the tower, met the base commander, and toured aircraft and simulators. One of the most memorable aspects was getting a helmet made just for me.

SCFC: You've been flying all around the country lately - tell us about that.
I started my flight training here in the Bay Area at SCFC, and I've also flown in Iowa and Colorado. Although I have visited Iowa many times and I lived in Colorado for several years, seeing the landscape from above is quite different. Both locations had snow, so I was able to take-off and land with snow on the runway. The most complex airport I've flown is Centennial in Colorado, with intersecting runways and many taxiways.

SCFC: What have you learned from flying outside the Bay Area?
We're spoiled here in the Bay Area. There's no snow, and we fly at sea level, which gives us better performance. Our highly controlled airspace is a mixed blessing- elsewhere there may be a lot of radio silence, but in the Bay Area there's constant chatter and constant traffic.

I learned how quickly weather can change. While flying in Colorado, the snow was forecasted to arrive later in the day, but it moved in earlier and quickly. I appreciated the help of a CFI with local knowledge.

And don't be afraid to ask for help. I had never asked "say again" or for a progressive taxi, both of which were of great help at the larger, busier airport.

SCFC: You recently took your first solo flight - how did it feel?
Honestly, not that different. I was so focused on flying and landing. I noticed how much lighter the plane felt without another person in it and how much quieter it was with no one talking! Only later was I able to relax and felt the exhilaration flood through. It was a great giddy feeling!

SCFC: What do you do when you're not flying?
As cliche as it sounds, I enjoy travelling. It hasn't gotten old yet, and I'll continue until it does. Growing up, Africa was a faraway mystical place. I've been to South Africa twice, and highly recommend it. I think any international trip highlights how small the world actually is. Otherwise, I'm in school right now, and working. The free time is usually filled up with studying or being outside.

Calling the Next Generation of Pilots
If you know a high school student interested in aviation, 2015 is off to a great start. Our Young Aviators Weekend (YAW) club is off to a great start. We've had two meetings so far, and a great group of kids are participating. In the next session - Sunday, March 8, 2-5pm - the group will decide who the student leaders will be. The club meets every other weekend and has a wide variety of aviation related activities.

SCFC also has a special relationship with Sequoia High School. Our maintenance team is participating with a weekly after school vocational exposure program to give young people a deeper look into the kind of careers in aviation maintenance. Congratulations Sequoia students. We're glad to be working with you.

Upwind Fundraising: Send in the Matching Funds
Thank you to the many Flight Center members and friends who have generously donated to the Upwind Foundation and the 2015 Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. Now that the Upwind Foundation is an official 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, your donation may qualify for your employer's matching funds. Let's all work to stretch the program's reach by seeking out those matching funds wherever available. Some fundraising will continue through the spring. If you haven't yet sent in your gift to Upwind, there's still time. Pilots are also encouraged to volunteer as mentor pilots or tutors for this summer's winners.

March 27-29 (Fri-Sun) Santa Maria Wine Tasting Weekend
We are looking forward to this year's wine tasting weekend! FOG has been taking this spring wine tasting trip for many years now, and it always ends up being a great time. The fun starts with Friday night happy hour and continues on Saturday with an afternoon of wine tasting. We convoy around in rental minivans, taste great wines, and eat plenty of delicious wine country food. This trip is perfect for bringing along friends and family. We hope you can join us.

July 1-5 (Wed-Sun) 2015 FOG Colorado Trip
Another FOG tradition is the Colorado Mountain Flying trip. The Rocky Mountains are a pilot's playground, and we want you to have the opportunity to enjoy them safely. This year's stops include Salt Lake City, Utah; Salida, CO; and Las Vegas, NV for the night of July 4th. Planes are beginning to fill, so be sure to contact us soon to secure your spot. This trip requires a CFI on board, so it's a great opportunity to work toward an aircraft, high-performance, or G1000 avionics checkout.
