Right Seat Workshop - Radio Communication & ATC
SCFC's Right Seat Workshops are designed to give right-seaters opportunities to learn more about what is happening in the cockpit. Each ground-based session will familiarize participants with one area of flying, and can be paired with in-flight training sessions on request.

Session #1 is an introduction to radio communication and air traffic control. CFI Dan Dyer presents this fun, interactive workshop on Saturday, September 1st, 10am-3pm. Cost is $80 for right-seaters sponsored by SCFC members, or $100 for non-members. Call (650) 946-1700 to sign up or inquire further.

Member Profile: Calvin Craig
Calvin Craig is shooting for the stars. He aims to become a commissioned officer in the Air Force, and he's starting by learning to fly at here San Carlos Flight Center, enrolling in the Aviation Operations program at SJSU, and participating in the Air Force ROTC program. "People often ask me what type of planes I want to fly in the Air Force, and I don't care, as long as it flies! My Uncle George once told me to 'shoot for the stars, but settle for the moon.' So I'd be just as happy flying big/slow cargo or passenger planes as I would flying super-sonic fighter jets."

On July 30th, Calvin achieved his first solo flight. "To be honest, I thought I would have been more nervous than I actually was. Once Kevin jumped out of the plane, I still felt cool and comfortable at the controls. Two things I noticed about soloing: the airplane's climb performance is much better with no instructor! And it seems to be a lot quieter in the plane, sort of an eerie silence."

Ever since Uncle George took Calvin flying at age eight, "from then on, that's all I ever wanted, and now I finally have the opportunity to pursue that passion. You get that sense of freedom that really only pilots get. It's one of those feelings you can't explain, you just have to experience it. It is very satisfying."

The Member Profile is a new regular newsletter feature, designed to help SCFC members get to know one another.

Join the Special Ops Team!
Roll up your sleeves and get involved in the Special Ops Team! Current projects involve photography, event planning, and making the Flight Center a place where everyone feels welcomed and involved. Meetings are generally every other Monday at 6:30pm in the SCFC classroom, and our next meeting is Monday, August 13 at 6:30pm, and we'll focus on photography.
It's Air Rally Time!
Come join the fun as we take to the skies for an aerial treasure hunt. Think The Amazing Race with teams of three in airplanes. Only one person needs to be a pilot, so gather two of your friends and sign up for some fun! You fly the airplane while one person opens and solves clues and the other person scans the ground searching for that clue. If you solve all the clues correctly you'll end up at the final destination where we'll be waiting for you with lunch. Sign up today on the FOG Database, or call (650) 946-1700.

Want to join but don't have a full crew? We can help! Contact Terry at or (650) 307-2304.
