SUMMARY:Advice from the Other Side: An SFO Controller’s Guide to Class B Operations and VFR Transitions
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nFlying in Class Bravo airspace can be intimidating.  Pilots are often unfamiliar with the workings of Class B air traffic controllers and the commercial operations that go on there. It can be overwhelming when tower controllers issue rapid-fire instructions. Luckily\, it doesn’t have to be this way. \nCome spend an afternoon with Daniele Ferlito\, a current Air Traffic Controller at SFO Tower. Daniele will talk you through the do’s and don’ts of VFR pilots transitioning through the dense Class B airspace around the SF Bay Area\, along with delving into daily operations at SFO. Learn how to safely transition along one of the many transition routes\, avoid jet traffic\, and how to effectively work with controllers. \nAfter the seminar\, you’ll have more confidence the next time you call up San Francisco Tower with a bay tour request. If you’ve ever wondered how ATCs make decisions on the fly and keep our airspace moving quickly and safely\, this is a great chance to learn more!\n\n\n  \nDaniele Ferlito is an Air Traffic Control Specialist at San Francisco Airport. Born and raised in Italy\, he lived there until age 11\, and has been in the Bay Area since ’94. After a year at UC Davis he joined the Marine Corps\, interested in aviation. (’03-’08) He then signed up for the air crew\, ended up in air traffic control not knowing what it was. After a 16-week air traffic academy in Pensacola\, FL\, 3.5 years as an ATC at MCAS Camp Pendleton\, 7 months deployed in Iraq\, and an 8-week FAA ATC academy in Oklahoma City\, brought him to SFO Tower in 2010. He is a dedicated controller and committed towards making GA pilots informed and safe while operating around class B airspaces.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2022 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:A Look Into NASA ASRS Reports
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nNASA ASRS reports protect pilots from being sanctioned for their mistakes. After being de-identified\, ASRS reports are analyzed\, and used to make recommendations for improvements to the ATC system and pilot procedures. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Captain Ben Taber with over 18\,000 hours of flying to highlight the importance of ASRS reports. Through his collection of ASRS reports\, Ben will categorize them into areas from which all of us can learn. In this seminar\, Ben will focus on his experiences depicted within his reports and target certain specialty areas. The presentation will conclude with an overview of how to file an ASRS report and the process that follows. \nASRS reports are confidential\, voluntary\, and non-punitive meaning all pilots should utilize this system. Whether it’s your first time hearing about ASRS reports\, or your dozenth report\, this is a seminar you won’t want to miss.\n\n\n  \nCapt. Bennett Taber is a check airman and training captain with over 20 years and 18\,000 hours of air charter experience throughout the western United States. His first 500 hours of flying were conducted in Alaska. Captain Taber manages flight operations and charter sales for Dreamline Aviation in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a Dreamline Training Captain in Beech King Air aircraft.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Getting a Type Rating
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \nMost people have flown in a jet as a passenger. A few people have flown jets in a flight simulator. But very few have actually acted as pilot in command of a jet aloft. The process to obtain FAA authorization to pilot a jet is not an easy one. It takes skill\, advanced training\, and a comprehensive review of systems and operations to fly them. All pilots of jet-powered aircraft must be appropriately type rated by a make/model basis\, and the process to obtain them is not easy. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites ATP and CFI Russell Bowerman to provide an overview of the training required for a type rating\, such as the one needed to fly a jet. In this seminar\, he will discuss the prerequisites\, training documentation\, and extensive processes he went through to receive his EMB 145 type rating. Additionally\, Russell will give examples of how thorough and systematic training processes used by the airlines can help all pilots in the safer operation of their aircraft\, or during training for their next rating. Whether that is incorporating flows\, crew resource management\, or adhering to checklists\, every flight deck can benefit from these professional flying techniques. \nWe encourage all pilots to learn from this unique training experience and realize the undertaking of this comprehensive training.\n\n\n  \nRussell Bowerman has always maintained an interest in aviation\, visiting aviation museums\, taking sightseeing flights\, and staying up to date on all the newest fighter jets and airliners.  After receiving his Private Pilot Certificate in 2018\, he decided to make a career of it\, attaining his Commercial and CFI ratings. Russell has been teaching and loving it ever since. Beyond flying\, he really enjoys travelling and feels lucky to meet new people and learn about their diverse backgrounds in the process of flight training.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2022 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:I Just Got ForeFlight\, Now What? A Beginners Guide to ForeFlight
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nStudents and new pilots are increasingly flying with computer tablets\, and using software that replaces paper charts and documents with the digital equivalents. These applications\, such as ForeFlight\, are extremely powerful and have a plethora of features. For a pilot just beginning to use ForeFlight\, the choices and options seem overwhelming. Valuable features and capabilities can go undiscovered. \nJoin SCFC in inviting commercial pilot Brandan Dadoun to highlight some of the important first steps to take after downloading ForeFlight\, and how to get started. In this seminar\, he will cover a basic introduction to the application including the most efficient ways to use the software. With so many different customizations\, subscription plans\, and ways to do the same thing\, it can be overwhelming for many. Some of these include how to set up performance profiles\, weight and balance\, how to use geo referenced charts\, and set up your electronic logbook. After this seminar you will feel confident in your basic abilities to navigate the application and have the resources to continue to learn from. \n**(Note: ForeFlight can be quite overwhelming with features\, but basic Internet connection and iPad operation can also be overwhelming.  While we hope to talk extensively about ForeFlight\, this IS NOT a technical support seminar for basic Internet connectivity and iPad use.)** \nIf you are just beginning to explore the features of ForeFlight and want to deepen your understanding on how to effectively use these great tools\, you will want to attend this seminar. Have your tablet handy and discover this powerful tool available for pilots.\n\n\n  \nBrandan Dadoun is a commercial\, multi-engine pilot and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator. SUMMARY:Airport of the Month: Rio Vista
DESCRIPTION:This month’s airport is a great airport to visit for a flight training student – Rio Vista (O88)! While it may look like a normal airport\, this small field has a lot of things that make it a great way to add some sizzle to your training. \nLocated in the Sacramento River Delta\, Rio Vista is an untowered airport with two crossing runways. There is self-serve fuel available\, and a small FBO on the field with a pilot lounge. The area is noteworthy for the breeze that picks up\, making landings very tricky. \nAre you a private pilot student? Grab a CFI and hone your crosswind landing technique on the runway with the most crosswind. You’ll be surprised at how much better you get once you practice a few laps in the pattern. Don’t forget your short field landings\, either. With one runway only 2\,200’ long\, you’ll be great at nailing your precision landings for your checkride. \nCommercial students will benefit from the same features\, but also will like the flat river area for ground reference maneuvers like Eights on Pylons. Lots of small bridges\, floats\, and structures abound in the Delta region\, making it easy to practice all types of ground reference maneuvers! \nInstrument students and pilots also have a GPS approach to use\, as well. The circling minimums are fairly low\, and with the two runways\, pilots appreciate the challenge of perfecting their circling approaches to the airport after reaching minimums. In summer\, it’s rarely foggy\, making this a great airport to practice at with a CFII or safety pilot. \nIf you head up to Rio Vista this month\, let us know what you worked on and how it went at flyoutgroup@sancarlosflight.com. We look forward to hearing about your adventures.

SUMMARY:A “Stabilized Approach” to Learning to Land
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nIt sounds like such a simple concept\, to fly a “stabilized approach” to the runway. It’s something new student pilots are told as they begin to master approach to land and landing. But that simple phrase can be interpreted many ways\, and some work better for new students than others. Take a moment and listen to this presentation as we dissect both the final approach leg of the traffic pattern and the instructional methods used to help new pilots fly it well. \nSCFC invites back CFI Dan Dyer\, whose passion for effective instruction and for landing in particular give him the perfect vantage point to help us pull apart the issues behind what a stabilized approach is. Dan will share his journey as a pilot and some of the mistakes he made along the way to building landing proficiency\, and how for many years his understanding of “stabilized” was working against him. As an instructor\, he had to rebuild the thought process behind flying a final approach and has found a way that is easier for new pilots to think about aircraft control on final\, including what he believes is the most effective order of operations on final and on short final. \nIf you are a new student struggling with landings\, or even if you’re an advanced pilot that wants a different way to think about the control paradigm that sets you up for the perfect landing\, join us to hear this new approach to stabilized landing.\n\n\n  \nDan Dyer is the founder of the San Carlos Flight Center\, and has built the motto of Safety\, Community\, and Adventure for over 8 years.  Dan was an instructor for 15 years\, accumulated over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics.  Find out more about Dan at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at dan@sancarlosflight.com \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. DESCRIPTION:Each year an armada of 182s departs the Bay Area bound for a fun and amazing mountain flying adventure! This year we head back to Colorado for some awesome Rocky Mountain flying. We will take the southern route through Arizona\, landing at the KSEZ for an overnight stay in Sedona. Day two we journey into the heart of the Rockies for a two-night stay in Eagle\, Colorado\, our home base for mountain flying. Eagle is situated among the best mountain passes and 40 NM Northwest of the famous Leadville Airport\, North America’s highest airport at 9927′. Day Four we overfly the Grand Canyon en route to Las Vegas. The trip is a great opportunity to master advanced avionics\, get an airplane-specific checkout and earn your high-performance endorsement. Each plane will have 1 CFI and 2 pilots on board. With two pilots per CFI and aircraft\, the daily rate is halved between you and whomever you fly with to get mountain flying experience. \nIt promises to be an unforgettable flying adventure with plenty of room for ground-based fun as well. \n \nThe trip is billed by SCFC at aircraft Hobbs time and instructor daily rate. The costs below is per person and assumes 2 people sharing airplane and CFI costs.\nCFI: 2.5 daily rates @ $665/day = $1657.50\nAirplane: 12 Hobbs hours @ $245/hr = $2940\nLodging: 4 nights @ $165/night = $660\nRental car: 2 nights @ $150/night = $300\nEstimated total cost: $5\,563 (excludes food\, incidentals\, ride-share at destinations without rental cars\, etc.) \nContact the SCFC Chief Pilot team (chiefpilot@sancarlosflight.com) to express interest in and sign up for the trip. \n

SUMMARY:Path to Getting a Flight Instructor Certificate
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nIs teaching your passion? Are you a commercial pilot? Do you want to train the next generation of pilots? Then obtaining the Certified Flight Instructor certificate\, or CFI is the right choice for you. Being a CFI is one of the most common flying careers a commercial pilot might pursue. Becoming an instructor is an excellent way to gain experience while mastering your flying skills\, knowledge\, and competency. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Michael Dutton to walk through his journey of becoming a flight instructor. In this seminar\, he will provide a high-level overview of the certificate\, the applicable regulations and requirements necessary for the rating\, and a summary of the training process. This certificate takes time\, and should not be rushed. Each CFI candidate must be willing to fully dedicate their time to being an effective teacher. From developing thorough lessons plans to right-seat flying and comprehensive knowledge on a variety of topics\, there are no ways to shortcut this process. \nThe CFI certificate can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a pilots career. Join us to see if you are up for the challenge. \n \n\n\nMichael Dutton is a CFI\, and CFII in fixed wing with private pilot privileges in helicopters. He’s been flying while working at the San Carlos airport for over seven years\, first working for the Flight Center before moving on to Airport Operations. In his off-days\, he’s still at the airport as he continues flying and advancing his flying skills. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2022 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. Livestream access is free for everyone\, but recorded seminars are available solely to members at a later date. SUMMARY:Ground School Refresher: Airspace
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nLet’s face it\, airspace is an imaginary concept. It is just a shorthand way to talk about the set of Federal Aviation Regulations that apply by location and altitude\, and the impact they have on VFR flight. As confusing as you think the rules are\, with a quick refresher\, you’ll be back to full knowledge in no time. \nIf it has been awhile since you sat through ground school\, you may be due for an airspace refresher. In this safety seminar\, we will review the different classes of airspace that are found in the United States.  We’ll cover their shapes\, sizes\, operating rules\, and also cover special use airspace. Want an easy way to keep confusing Class G airspace rules memorized\, use the Flight Center’s method that teaches there are 3 types of Class G airspace\, Class G-low\, Class G-mid\, and Class G-high. Do you know the differences between them? Where would you look it up? What happens to Class D when the tower closes? How well do you know airspace? \nThis safety seminar is open to current and aspiring Private Pilots\, and will be of particular interest to students pilots and those who are preparing for a flight review. You will leave the seminar with a renewed understanding\, and probably a few memory aids to take with your on your next flight. \n  \nBrandan Dadoun is a commercial\, multi-engine pilot and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator. He has completed the majority of his flight training at SCFC with over 500 flight hours and has extensive flying experience throughout California in both piston and turbine-powered aircraft. In 2021\, Brandan was recognized by the FAA for his achievements in promoting aviation safety. SUMMARY:I Failed a Checkride – Now What?
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nEvery FAA Practical Test (or “checkride”) has three possible outcomes – pass\, fail\, or discontinuance. Most people pass on the first time\, and you’ve likely heard a number of stories of passed checkrides. But what happens if you don’t pass? What comes next after you have been notified that the maneuver you just flew fails to meet FAA standards? Can you finish the checkride? What additional training is needed? What is involved in a retest? Is your flying career over? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Commercial Pilot Travis Bender to share stories from the two of three checkrides that he has passed to date\, and details of how he handled his experience failing one. How was he notified? How did the examiner react? What training did he do between the failed checkride and the successful pass on his second attempt? In this seminar\, he’ll explain how to work with your instructor to get you back in the air\, and what ways you can practice your skills before the next checkride attempt. Travis will conclude with ways to turn a failed checkride into a learning opportunity and a chance to grow as a pilot. \nFor those who are planning on taking a checkride soon\, or have failed a checkride\, you won’t want to miss this seminar.\n\n\n  \nTravis Bender is a commercial pilot who learned to fly at the Flight Center. He is actively working on his CFI rating and leads the Marketing and Events team at SCFC. When he’s not at the airport\, Travis currently works in a strategic finance role at a major Silicon Valley company.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:First Aid for Pilots
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nA good pilot is always learning ways to enhance their safety. As pilots\, we are always preparing for the in-flight “what ifs”\, but what about training for after the air emergency? You’ve declared an in air emergency and been forced to the ground\, now what? How can you treat your own injuries? How and when should you administer first aid to others? What should you bring in your first aid kit? What’s packed in your survival bag? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Daniel Sanchez Ruiz as he walks us through how pilots can administer basic first aid and what life saving tools you should bring along with you. In this seminar\, Daniel will discuss basic first aid techniques and give real-life examples of how to handle bandaging\, splinting\, problems equalizing pressure in the ear\, burns and hypoxia. These examples are things any pilot can encounter during their flight\, or stranded in a wreck site. Daniel will share his experience to ensure you are prepared to handle these stressful and challenging scenarios if you should encounter them. \nEvery pilot should have a knowledge of how to treat themselves or their passengers in case of an emergency\, and have a thorough systematic thought process of going about it. Join us to feel confident about these techniques on your next flight. \n \n\n\nDaniel Sanchez Ruiz is a senior flight instructor at San Carlos Flight Center.  He began his aviation career with maintenance training in Caracas\, Venezuela\, but quickly moved into flying as pilot.  After moving to the United States seven years ago\, he attained his Commercial certificate\, instrument rating\, and eventually CFI.  He came to SCFC after working at SFO as a ramp agent\, and has trained at Tradewinds Aviation in San Jose. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Bigger\, Higher\, Faster – Transition to the Professional Flying Environment
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nPilots take to the skies for a variety of reasons; whether it’s for a fun day trip with friends or family\, or as part of your daily routine as a professional pilot. Regardless of how you use flying\, have you ever wondered how the pilots behind the nation’s largest air carriers sound so professional? Or how they nail a spot landing every time? Or how they can handle flying such a large aircraft at high speeds? These pilots use industry developed techniques and procedures to ensure the highest level of professionalism and safety while flying. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Brandan Dadoun\, commercial pilot\, to share his experience transitioning into the professional flying environment. In this seminar\, Brandan will highlight the key differences present between recreational and professional flying such as crew resource management\, structured use of checklists\, and adapting to larger\, more complex turbine powered aircraft. Brandan will emphasize how any pilot can benefit from incorporating these new techniques and many more into their flying. After learning some things the hard-way during his career progression\, he hopes to share his teachable moments for all pilots to hear. \nIf you want to hear more about how you can learn from the professional flying environment\, or are curious about starting your career as a professional aviator\, join us for this seminar. \n \n\n\nBrandan Dadoun is a commercial multi-engine pilot and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator. SUMMARY:Radio Communications 3: Non Towered Airport Communications
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \nFlying in and out of the many airports in California requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills. And yet\, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training. Usually\, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them\, both good and bad. Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school\, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject.   \nThis seminar is the third in a series of SCFC’s Radio Communication Safety Seminars and focuses on non-towered radio communications. Although Federal Aviation Regulations don’t require pilots to make radio calls at non-towered airports\, it is strongly advised for safety. This seminar will help newer pilots understand the structure of radio calls for non-towered airports and how to improve their own radio skills.  \nHerb Patten\, Chief Pilot AGI and CFI and Dan Dyer\, CFI will walk participants through a foundation of non-towered radio communication phraseology and use\, from the basics through advanced. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. \nThis will be an important seminar for pilots struggling with radio communications. If this is you\, plan to attend. Build your confidence\, and be the pilot you want to be.  \n \n\n\nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015\, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors.  \nDan Dyer is the founder of the San Carlos Flight Center\, and has built the motto of Safety\, Community\, and Adventure for over 8 years. Interestingly\, each item is built up in the student very different. Knowledge is taught. Good decision making is modeled\, and mentored. But flight skills are unique\, in that they are mostly acquired by the student by trial and error. This presents a challenge to a CFI – how to create a series of trial and error challenges that allows the student to make and correct for small mistakes while developing along the overall path. The ability to recognize what roadblocks to self-learning are occurring in each student can make the difference between an okay instructor and a good one. \nSCFC invites CFI Dan Dyer to share some of the educational exercises he used when working with students to improve their landings\, that San Carlos Flight Center instructors have collectively dubbed to as “landing games”. They include various low passes\, takeoff\, taxi\, and landing challenges\, each designed to create the right practice environment for a student to teach themselves hand-eye coordination skills by trial and error. Dan’s years of experience as a flight instructor were informed by his education in cognitive science and his passion for understanding how people think and learn. These targeted landing exercises may seem unusual at first\, but each is a way of breaking apart the complicated skill of landing into component skills that can be built up. \nIf you are a new flight instructor looking for a way to help your students move past roadblocks in their skill acquisition journey\, we invite you to join us for this presentation. The topic may also be valuable for private pilots looking to better understand the individual skill components that build up to landing excellence\, or to student pilots who want to better understand the challenge their instructors are having in “teaching” landing. \n \n\n\nDan Dyer is the founder of the San Carlos Flight Center\, and has built the motto of Safety\, Community\, and Adventure for over 8 years.  Dan was an instructor for 15 years\, accumulated over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics.  Find out more about Dan at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at dan@sancarlosflight.com\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2022 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:Instrument Approach Plates
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nInstrument pilots develop familiarity with instrument approaches based on a review of the approaches they typically fly. There is a lot of similarity among the information contained in the majority of approach procedures. Every now and then\, you come across an approach that may make you stop and wonder what the notation means. Can there be a glide slope on an LDA? What are some of the more challenging holds that you might find? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Brian Eliot\, CFII\, to share a select set of approach plates for their unique procedures. He will cover how to identify unique approach procedure notations and sift through the clutter to identify the vital differences. \nWhile you may not actually fly one of these approaches\, getting a broader exposure to some of them will make you a more informed instrument pilot.  We will use examples of approaches from around the country. Join us to be a more prepared\, and knowledgeable instrument rated pilot. \n \n\n\nBrian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s Assistant Chief Pilot and resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer\, a software developer\, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He regularly presents at San Carlos Flight Center safety seminars and has a reputation for making complex concepts easy to learn and understand. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Ground School Refresher: Weather Theory
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nWeather can play a huge factor in any pilots pre-flight planning and actual flight.  Weather is a complex subject that can affect an aircraft’s performance\, ability to generate lift\, along with many other things.  From the subtle forming of clouds\, to thunderstorms and microbursts\, how can you stay safe in the air? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Collin Korey to cover the topic of weather theory. In this seminar he will provide a general outlook on weather and how it is created\, how the coriolis effect affects weather\, how to detect adverse weather patterns\, fog\, and much more.  Be more confident on your next flight knowing that you have made the right decisions for your flight. \nIf you have ever had difficulties trying to grasp the complexities of weather\, then this is the seminar for you. \n \n\n\nCollin Korey aspired to be a restauranteur until a thought during an airline flight in Europe formed in his head; “This flying stuff is great\, I wonder if I could do it for a living.” Thus\, on the day after graduating from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor’s in Hotel & Restaurant Management\, he took a discovery flight at the nearby Flagstaff Pulliam airport\, and\, an hour later\, a new career path was paved. After earning his certificates and ratings in Arizona\, Collin continued working as an instructor for about a year before moving to San Carlos in 2021 to search for more clouds and cooler weather. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Full Moon Flyers: Harris Ranch
DESCRIPTION:A longtime favorite of pilots in California\, Harris Ranch (3O8) is known for its award-winning steak and hamburgers. Located just outside Coalinga\, the ranch features a hotel and multiple restaurants\, as well as an excellent lighted runway for pilots to fly in. On Thursday\, August 11\, let’s fly down to the Ranch to have dinner at their signature restaurant. \nThe flight down is varied as it takes you from the urban sprawl of the Bay Area\, across the Diablo Range\, and then an easy flight following the I-5 corridor. You’ll get a view of the ranch from the air before descending for the thin runway that sits just to the south of the restaurant. Upon landing\, we’ll walk to the restaurant together at 7 PM\, where we will enjoy a variety of freshly cut steaks and other dining options. Harris Ranch is regarded as one of the best restaurants for pilots to fly into in Northern California. The food truly is excellent. \nAfter dinner\, depart for a moonlit flight back to the Bay Area. The route is easy\, as you will follow the I-5 interstate until reaching Tracy\, and then from there\, it’s just a quick flight over the Altamont Pass into the Bay Area. If you need to reset your night currency or practice night landings for your next certificate\, Los Banos\, Tracy\, and Byron airports all are excellent places to do so. \nImportant: As Harris Ranch’s restaurant is very popular\, please make sure you RSVP no later than Monday\, August 8th. This will ensure we can accommodate seating for everyone. \nLike other FOG events\, please RSVP below\, and indicate if you are able to take passengers\, so we can allow student pilots and other aviation community members to participate. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nUpdate August 9: This event is currently full! SUMMARY:Truckee Airport Operations
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n**For information\, flyers\, and handouts referenced during this presentation please click here.** \n  \n\n\n\nTruckee Airport is the gateway to Lake Tahoe.  The spectacular views of Lake Tahoe are a short flight away\, but pilots need to be aware of the challenges associated with these flights.  Truckee is settled well above sea level\, located between mountainous terrain and gorgeous vistas.  This location brings variable weather conditions which can pose tricky to manage for new pilots.  While it can be an excellent place to visit\, pilots need to be thoroughly familiar with airport procedures and to know what to expect upon their arrival in Truckee. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites David Van Quest\, the Pilot Outreach Coordinator at the Truckee Airport to talk with pilots about terrain\, best routes of travel\, tower operations\, and recently installed ADSB ground stations and their impact on flight operations. Truckee is a dynamic airport with noise abatement procedures\, curfews\, seasonal flight considerations such as density altitude\, mountain wave\, icing\, wildlife and much more. David will also briefly touch on some of the things one might want to do in Truckee\, along with the services the airport provides to visiting pilots. \nIf you are looking to plan a trip to Truckee sometime this summer\, join us to feel more safe\, confident\, and knowledgeable on your upcoming trip to Truckee. \n \n\n\nDavid Van Quest was originally from Southern California\, David moved to the Truckee/ Tahoe area in 2013 to enjoy a life in the mountains. David began his career in aviation in 2018 when he was hired by the Truckee Tahoe Airport as their Noise Associate. In 2021 he earned his private pilot’s certificate and shortly after was promoted to KTRK’s Aviation & Community Coordinator where he interacts with community members and teaches pilots the best ways to come and go from Truckee. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:You’re Not the Only Pilot in the Sky
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nThe radio frequency is a precious and shared resource\, with every pilot on frequency hearing everyone else’s good\, bad\, and ugly transmissions. Radio skills are essential but often not taught or taught poorly. Sadly\, pilots often learn from listening to the radio where there is a plethora of jargon\, slang and extraneous words. Learning to use direct\, clear\, and concise phraseology is imperative to effective radio communication; although not everyone always follows that motto. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites King Air Captain and check airman Ben Taber to share with us the things that grate on the ears of other pilots and air traffic controllers. After 30 years of flying throughout North America\, Ben has developed a keen ear for quality radio practices\, and useful tips & tricks that can improve your radio skills and make you sound like a pro. Sounding like a professional on the radio doesn’t have to be just for airline pilots – take this opportunity to see if you have been developing bad radio habits over the years\, and find a solution to remedy the issue. \nJoin us for this ear-opening opportunity to discover key radio practices that you might’ve missed out on for all these years. \n \n\n\nCaptain Bennett Taber is a check airman and training captain with over 20 years and 18\,000 hours of air charter experience throughout the western United States. His first 500 hours of flying were in Alaska. Captain Taber manages flight operations and charter sales for Dreamline Aviation in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a Dreamline Training Captain in Beech King Air aircraft. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:How Flight Sim Training Improved my Radio as a Pilot
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nSpeaking on the radio with ATC embodies a lot of a pilots workload. Sometimes pilots like to speak too much while transmitting on frequency\, leading to frequency congestion\, confusion\, and can overall be an annoyance. As pilots we should be direct\, clear\, and professional with our transmissions. SCFC pilot Brandan Dadoun has an interesting story about how his time training to be a controller on VATSIM\, the virtual air traffic simulation network\, actually improved his understanding and ability as a pilot. \nAs you may imagine\, real life air traffic controllers go through extensive radio and procedures training. It turns out the same is true for people training to be virtual air traffic controllers on VATSIM.  Over three years\, Brandan studied the basics of airspace\, airport and enroute procedures\, LOAs\, and detailed procedural training for all of Northern California and Oakland Center. Under supervised training\, he was able to work up to controlling Oakland Center. Now\, he trains others in ATC procedures in the SF Bay Area. \nSCFC has invited Brandan to share what he has learned from virtual air traffic management\, and how it informs his ability to use the radio effectively as a pilot. He has tips/references to the AIM on how to become a better pilot on the radio. He will also interactively show crucial examples of how being “lazy” or careless about radio phraseology can lead to confusion. Learn how to spot the confusion within multiple examples of bad phraseology\, and ultimately become safer in the skies. \n \n\n\nBrandan Dadoun is a commercial\, multi-engine pilot and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator. He has completed the majority of his flight training at SCFC with over 500 flight hours and has extensive flying experience throughout California in both piston and turbine-powered aircraft. In 2021\, Brandan was recognized by the FAA for his achievements in promoting aviation safety. Outside of flying and presenting\, he enjoys playing the saxophone\, and staying active. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:How I Prepared for My Private Pilot Checkride
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nFor most pilots\, the first checkride is the most intimidating one. It can be a nerve-wracking experience decoding the ACS and sitting through the glare of the designated pilot examiner. Have you prepared\, studied\, and reviewed what’s required of you on checkride? Are you ready to fly on your own? And can you be the safe\, competent pilot that we all aim to be? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Private Pilot Obed Han to share his journey in becoming a Private Pilot. Obed will provide an overview of the training\, how he prepared\, some pitfalls to avoid\, and how he and his instructor worked together to ensure that he was ready for the practical test. How they provided him with the required aeronautical knowledge\, trained him to model proper risk management while developing full aircraft control and flight proficiency. It’s crucial that each pilot recognizes these areas as they develop themselves as a pilot. \nJoin us to hear more about the checkride experience\, how to prepare\, and have an insight into the first step of becoming a certificated pilot. \n \n\n\nObed Han is a Private Pilot and received his training at San Carlos Flight Center. Obed became interested in aviation after taking a Young Eagles flight in 2018. As a result he earned the James Ray Scholarship which provided him funding for his flight training. He is also involved within numerous aviation programs\, including co-founding the local EAA Chapter’s Young Aviators program\, participating in the RV-12 build\, and volunteering as a mentor for VATSIM\, virtually controlling airplanes across the Bay Area and training other ATC candidates. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure.
