DESCRIPTION:Notice: The restaurant has informed us that they are closed this evening for an unforeseen event. We will reschedule the event at a later date\, and are sorry for the inconvenience.  \nTake a scenic flight up north with FOG to try out a new destination and restaurant! El Molcajete is a Mexican restaurant right across the street from Ukiah Airport’s transient parking. On April 16\, let’s fly out to Ukiah (UKI) and meet at the restaurant for dinner. \nPlan to meet at El Molcajete at 7:00 PM. El Molcajete is a local favorite\, and has a lot of praise as one of the best Mexican eateries in the area. The enchiladas and burritos are popular items but be aware that the portions are often large\, so plan on taking some leftovers on the return trip! \nUkiah Airport is a non-towered airport with a long runway about an hour’s flight north from San Francisco. We’ll park at transient parking\, where you can also find a fuel pump with self-serve 100LL. To get to Ukiah\, you can follow Highway 101 from Marin\, or take a slightly longer but scenic route along the coastline\, and then go direct to the nearby Mendocino VOR. For instrument pilots and students\, the airport also has three different types of approaches that you can use. \nLike other FOG events\, please RSVP below so we can get a proper headcount\, and we hope to see you at the event!

During flight training\, stall practice and stall recovery techniques are taught early\, and pilots learn they are something to avoid at all costs. This is a good thing. But there’s so much more to be learned from stall and stall recovery training\, it is worth a deeper look. \nSCFC former Chief Pilot Dan Dyer is passionate about safe and effective early flight training and often stresses the critical role that the first few flights play in establishing overall pilot competency. In his work training new flight instructors\, Dan approaches the stall training section of the private pilot syllabus in a different way\, with a deeper look at the How and Why of stall recovery practice. This emphasis on the purpose of stall training and the critical learning elements is as valuable to new pilots as it is to new flight instructors. Dan often approaches fundamental skills in a unique way that challenges pilots to improve their understanding and their skills. \nThis presentation\, while valuable to new students\, is equally informative for existing pilots as it will challenge their understanding of aircraft control and stability. What would you do if you had to extend your trip due to WX or mechanical issues? \nSCFC invites Sebastian Schewers\, private pilot\, to share how despite great planning he was confronted with weather conditions that prevented a return flight. He will discuss how his contingency planning had to be called into play when he got stranded due to weather at Shelter Cove. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nFlying through in the many airspaces of California requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills.  And yet\, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training.  Usually\, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them\, both good and bad.  Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school\, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Herb Patten\, Chief Pilot and AGI Dan Dyer\, to show how to perfect your communication and phraseology.  They will cover radio phraseology from the basics through advanced ATC services with emphasis on flight following and flight service stations.  This seminar will include many examples on how to recognize bad radio calls\, and how to fix them. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. \nIf you are interested in becoming better at your radio\, you don’t want to miss this seminar.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015\, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors. \n  \nSid Basu is a CFII\, and MEI with his Commercial ASEL\, AMEL and instrument rating with over 2000 hours total time and over 1500 hours of dual given. DESCRIPTION:On April 3\, make the quick hop over the Santa Cruz Mountains to Half Moon Bay for lunch\, where FOG will try the long-awaited and much-acclaimed new restaurant\, Pilot Light! \nThe flight is quick from points around the Bay Area but is much faster and less stressful than navigating the traffic on Highway 92. This is a perfect flight to take friends and family on\, as it affords stunning views of the local coastline\, beaches\, and mountains in such a short flight. \nAfter landing\, taxi to the ramp on the northeast side of the airport. Secure your aircraft and we’ll walk through the gate to meet at Pilot Light at 12 PM. The restaurant is run by the same team behind the famed All Spice restaurant in San Mateo\, and revel in serving up unique brunch offerings. The restaurant has received a lot of positive praise in the few weeks after opening\, with diners noting the fun twists and fresh ingredients on classic dishes. Weather such as thunderstorms\, or tornadoes should raise concerns for all pilots. It may have been awhile since you passed the basic weather theory questions from the FAA Knowledge Test\, and this information is too important to let go stale.  These weather hazards can never be understood enough\, and conditions that could create these weather bad boys should be monitored closely throughout the flight. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites commercial pilot and weather specialist Dave Kramer to investigate the classification and anatomy of thunderstorms\, the conditions for their formation\, and why they are so hazardous to aircraft. In addition to thunderstorms\, Dave will also analyze why tornadoes may spawn and how their conditions are conducive for lightning. \nKeep your weather hazard theoretical knowledge up-to-date with this presentation\, either as preparation for a Flight Review or to enhance your safety as a pilot. \n \n\n\nDave Kramer is an instrument-rated\, tailwheel\, complex and high-performance endorsed commercial MEL pilot as well as a basic and instrument ground instructor with an interest in weather. SUMMARY:Airport of the Month: Camarillo
DESCRIPTION:Exactly 250 NM from San Carlos is Camarillo Airport\, one of the first airports you’ll find as you enter the busy Los Angeles airspace. This is a large airport with a lot of services\, a great restaurant\, and a stunning view on approach. \nCamarillo is located just southeast of Santa Barbara and to the east of nearby Oxnard Airport. Pilots landing at Camarillo should ensure that they are heading to Camarillo\, as both Oxnard and Camarillo can be interchangeable from the air. Both feature a singular long runway and numerous hangers\, so double-check your position and heading on your GPS or chart before entering their airspace. \nCamarillo has multiple FBOs\, so park at the one that offers the services you desire. The on-field restaurant\, Waypoint Cafe\, is located next to the Avex FBO ramp. Waypoint Cafe has won awards and accolades among the nation’s airport cafes\, so expect to wait a bit for a table if you don’t arrive early. Almost all the options are recommended\, but the breakfast items and milkshakes are particular hits. \nWhen arriving at Camarillo\, enjoy the views of the nearby mountains\, fertile farmlands\, and the ocean in the distance\, but be aware of the coastal marine layer that may persist in the early mornings. The airport does have multiple approaches\, and there are plenty of nearby alternate airports in the vicinity. \nThis is a great airport to stretch your flying skills on a longer cross-country and is a common destination for those working on their long commercial cross-country flight. While the flight may be long\, the Waypoint Cafe is a treat to go to and is well worth the trip.

SUMMARY:Flying the San Diego “Bay Tour”
DESCRIPTION:Despite what you learn on Day 1 of Private Pilot Ground School\, not every Class B airspace is shaped like concentric circles increasing with altitude (i.e.\, “upside down wedding cake”). Each Class B takes on special shapes and operating rules to protect the flight paths going to and from the anchor Class B airport it protects. Learning to navigate Class B airspace safely requires a study of local landmarks and procedures. \nSan Diego’s Class B environment is a perfect example\, with 2 Class B airports in close proximity – San Diego International and Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Two anchor airports means two Class B surface areas each with its unique shape and commingled Class B airspaces above. VFR pilots enjoying San Diego’s mountain and ocean views need to be very aware of VFR transitions through Class B surface areas\, and the VFR corridors with operational rules. \nSan Carlos Flight Center has invited CFI Ryan Sartor to share his experiences with flying San Diego’s equivalent of a “Bay Tour”\, VFR sightseeing through busy Class B and surrounding airspaces. DESCRIPTION:Nothing beats flying on a Friday afternoon after the workweek\, and with the full-moon happening on March 18th\, come with FOG to Monterey (MRY) for a dinner at Woody’s at the Airport! Enjoy dinner in the venue that overlooks the airline ramp\, allowing you to view take-offs and landings with your meal. \nThe flight down is an easy one from the Bay Area\, and an excellent choice to take passengers on a short flight if they have never been on a general aviation plane before. With views of the Santa Cruz Mountains\, Silicon Valley\, and Monterey Bay\, the flight down is one they won’t forget. Instrument pilots or students can practice their skills with a variety of approaches into the airport\, as well. Afterward\, you can refresh your night currency at Monterey or any of the other local airports on the way back to the Bay Area.  \nAfter landing\, park at Del Monte Aviation\, as Monterey does not have any transient parking near the terminal. From there\, it’s a short walk to the terminal. Woody’s is located upstairs from the entrance\, before the TSA checkpoints. Please plan to be at the restaurant around 7 PM. \nLike other FOG events\, RSVP below\, and please indicate if you are able to take passengers\, so we can allow student pilots and other aviation community members to participate. SUMMARY:Normalization of Deviation
DESCRIPTION:Fortunately\, Murphy’s law is usually wrong. What can go wrong usually doesn’t and the outcome is usually favorable. This is a good thing in that usually things work out in life. The problem with this is that the favorable outcomes can cause us to generalize. Since nothing bad happened\, the actions we took must have been correct. For pilots\, who are required to make hundreds of decisions that impact safety on every flight\, this may lead to sloppy thinking. If you did only a 75% complete preflight inspection and nothing bad happened\, you may conclude that only a 75% complete preflight is ever needed. This rationalization is the beginning of the process where a new normal is established that accepts shortcuts to safety and standard operating practices. This “normalization of deviation” is dangerous. \nSCFC invites CFI George Michellgiannakis to discuss this very topic. His seminar will discuss famous examples of normalization of deviation\, how human factors and external pressures combined to\, in time\, create a new norm of behavior with disastrous consequences. He will discuss how common pilot thinking is a contributing factor and present some countermeasures that GA pilots can use to avoid slipping into this dangerous situation. \nNormalization of deviation is a large factor in mishaps so expect an eye-opening discussion where you can reflect on your own habits and practices.”\n\n\nGeorge Michelogiannakis is a NAFI associate master CFI and an instructor/check pilot at the Civil Air Patrol. What is that regulation about IFR currency and what are the specifics? \nJoin Herb Patten\, Chief Pilot at San Carlos Flight Center for this “Devils in the Details” seminar on IFR currency. In this seminar we will take an in-depth look at the regulations instrument rated pilots must follow to maintain their IFR currency. Pilots sometimes remember this as six approaches within the last six calendar months. What counts as an approach? Oh\, and there is something about tracking and holding. What is meant by holding? Can I do these in a simulator instead? \nDon’t let the fog of the regulations put you in a hold. This seminar will clear you for the approach as we descend via the FAA regulations and legal interpretation to clarify some of the ambiguity in the regulations.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. Jarred by the noise\, you slam on the brakes and realize with dread that your wingtip is smashed into a fancy car sitting on the ramp. Questions flood your mind. How can I not see a car sitting there? How will I explain this to my flight club (or my plane partners)? What are the insurance implications of this? \nThankfully\, you attended a ground school refresher seminar on NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) accident and incident reporting requirements and are able to determine if this occurrence requires immediate notification to the NTSB. Join CFI Kyle Smathers to discuss NTSB reporting requirements so that you are the pilot that complies with applicable reporting requirements and not the one who draws the ire of the NTSB. SUMMARY:Airport of the Month: Pine Mountain Lake
DESCRIPTION:This March\, spend some time away from the sprawl of the Bay Area and enjoy a trip to Pine Mountain Lake (E45) in the Sierra Nevada foothills. This airport is home to the Pine Mountain Lake Association\, which features rental homes\, golf courses\, and other amenities. \nSome of the rental homes are hanger homes and can be booked for a weekend getaway on Airbnb. These places allow you to taxi your plane right from the ramp into a hanger attached to a private residence. It’s a great way to take weekend warrior flying to the next level! \nPine Mountain Lake is also a great place to fly for a cross-country. It’s a scenic approach\, as you can see the peaks of the Sierra’s in the distance\, but the terrain is still not considered mountainous. How perfect does the paint need to be to keep the propeller balanced? If my propeller isn’t completely broken\, do I still need to send it to the shop? San Carlos Flight Center has invited Samantha Bloodhart of Sullivan Propellers for an enlightening and educational presentation to promote awareness of safety related propeller and propeller governor issues. \nSam will review basic propeller knowledge for pilots\, including design differences between the major manufacturers\, fixed pitch vs. constant speed operation\, realistic evaluation of propeller condition before flight\, and the inherent dangers of deferring propeller (or any other aircraft) maintenance. She will discuss some of the common propeller Airworthiness Directives that are owner-operator responsibility (not just mechanics). Finally\, she will explain the differences between overhaul\, dynamic balancing\, and other major types of propeller/governor service.  This is all supported with numerous photos and years of anecdotes (some amusing and some amazing). \nPropellers are an essential part of flight\, and pilots should gain a better understanding about them. If you want to gain more knowledge about what keeps you flying\, we encourage all pilots to attend.\n\n\n  \nSamantha Bloodhart moved to the Bay Area in 1994 from Ohio to open Sullivan Propeller Specialists with her partner Brian Sullivan. Sullivan Propeller has been in business in Hayward since we opened\, now 23 years. She is a licensed FAA Repairman. Currently she is the voice of Sullivan Propeller – handling most of the administrative tasks as well as front-line on customer service. Samantha is also the primary administrator for our Repair Station and handles all the FAA requirements/compliance issues as such. In this seminar\, Brandan will summarize flight planning into the Palm Springs Area at both PSP and UDD airports. VFR charts are filled with ground-recognizable objects to aid a pilot in navigation. IFR charts have almost none of that\, as IFR pilots need to be able to complete the entire flight without visual reference to the ground. As a VFR pilot\, you probably have a general understanding of some of the basics of IFR charts including Victor airways and MEAs\, but there is a lot more information there. Do you know how to decipher MRAs? How about the different types of fixes found along an airway? We will take a close look at some hidden gems of details on the IFR enroute charts. \nSCFC Chief Pilot Herb Patten will present a safety seminar that will help demystify the numbers and markings on the FAA’s IFR Low Enroute Charts and allow pilots to develop a better understanding of the details on these charts. He will explain waypoint and navigational aid symbology\, and describe the various altitudes shown on the charts. This is a valuable safety seminar for new IFR students and a great refresher for pilots that are already instrument rated. \nDon’t miss out on this opportunity for an in depth review of the common and not so common content on IFR charts.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 3.00 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program.
