DESCRIPTION:Are you checking the weather before your flight simply by looking at METARs? Have you struggled with trying to get a comprehensive view of weather? Are you looking to get an understanding of ways to conduct a weather briefing? \nIf you are a student pilot or recent pilot trying to better understand options for accessing weather for a flight then join us for this workshop to learn more about weather briefings. We will use a cross-country flight scenario and walk through the process of gathering relevant weather for a flight. We will show you how to get aviation weather information from www.aviationweather.gov\, ForeFlight\, 1800wxbrief.com and by speaking to a flight service station weather briefer. \nIf you want to better understand how all these sources of weather fit in a briefing\, join us for this interactive session. \nHerb Patten is the Assistant Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches the private pilot and instrument ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 4\,000 hours in more than 130 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2025\, Herb was named a Distinguished Flight Instructor by AOPA. \nThis seminar is in-person. There will not be a live stream.

SUMMARY:What to Expect Taking the FAA Knowledge Test
DESCRIPTION:Pilots must pass two standardized tests to obtain a Private Pilot certificate – a test of knowledge on a computer\, and a test of flight skills in the aircraft.  In preparing for the flight skills test\, students can refer to the Airman Certification Standards document which specifies in great detail the nature of the flight skills test and the expectations of performance for each maneuver.  However\, preparing for the FAA Knowledge Test is more unstructured\, as it tests knowledge from any of several FAA publications at various depths and understanding levels.  With so many reference sources to digest\, what’s the best way to prepare for the FAA Knowledge Test? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites in 4 pilots who recently completed the FAA Knowledge Test for Private Pilots.  We’ll find out how they prepared for the exam\, and how that impacted their success.  We will ask them what they were most surprised to find when taking the exam\, and what guidance they can share with others preparing to take the test. \n There have been several recent changes to the Knowledge Test so come hear what to expect and refresh your knowledge on some of the aerodynamics topics to help you get the best score. Those labels are a relatively recent facade on a beast whose unnatural evolution was written in blood and bitterly contested. \nCFI/CFII Sal Valdes will reconstruct the National Airspace from cloud clearances in the forties to the “all-weather positive control concept“ in the fifties to today’s ADS-B requirements. Over one hundred years\, personal liberty clashes with public safety and separation technology is tragically outpaced by aircraft performance. \nThroughout the talk\, Sal will discuss online government archives that you can use to solve your own regulation mysteries. Woody’s was recognized by USA Today as the #1 “Best Airport Sit-Down Restaurant”. \nAre you a student pilot looking for more flight time? Monterey lies just outside the 50 NM requirement and counts towards your cross-country time! Looking for some practice flying IFR? Monterey and nearby airports offer various types of approaches. SUMMARY:Flying Safely At Night
DESCRIPTION:On November 1st\, Daylight Savings Time will end\, and with it comes early nightfall.  For those of us who work a regular 9-5 schedule\, early nightfall means an increase in night flying time.  How current are your night skills? Maybe it’s time to focus on what is different between day VFR and night VFR flight. \nObviously\, less ambient light adds challenges for anything requiring eyesight.  This includes preflight inspection\, taxi safety\, obstruction avoidance\, IMC recognition and avoidance\, cockpit resource management\, and a number of other things.  Most familiar to pilots is probably the differences in landing. The sight picture of a normal approach to a runway is very different with reduced external visual cues from night.  Flashing lights can help or hurt pilot attention and recognition. \nSo should night flight be avoided?  Not necessarily.  Night flight brings with it reduced ATC workloads\, often calmer winds\, cooler temperatures that help performance\, and the ability to spot traffic from farther off.  Your decision about flying at night can be aided by attending a Night Flying Refresher seminar like this one. \n  \n\nHerb Patten is the Assistance Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 4\,000 hours in more than 150 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program.
