SUMMARY:Under the Cowling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:CFI Herb Patten ground school student into the SCFC maintenance hangar for a closer look at airplane engines and systems\, including details of the fuel\, ignition\, induction and more in this in-person workshop. This is your chance to look “under the cowling” in a way that goes deeper than your common preflight inspection. \nAs a pilot\, you learn about airplane engines and systems from the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. That information is supplemented by details from your specific Airplane Flight Manual. So what more do you need to know? You crank the starter and everything works. But how does it work and how do the various systems such as the fuel\, induction\, and ignition work together to keep the engine flying? Ever wonder how the fuel flows from the tank to the cylinders? Or what happens when the air intake filter becomes blocked? Or what are the purposes of those tubes coming out of the bottom of the engine? \nThis in-person seminar will be conducted using a Cessna training plane with the engine cowling removed so you can get an up-close appreciation of the components of a typical\, small single-engine airplane. Space is limited so don’t delay in signing up for this unique experience. You will walk away with a new depth of knowledge that most pilots don’t have.

Monterey Airport doesn’t have a transient parking ramp\, but we will park at the Del Monte Aviation FBO. After parking\, we’ll grab a quick ride-share to the restaurant. This upscale restaurant is a great destination to treat a new passenger to the joys of flying or to treat yourself to a great flight. \nAre you a student pilot looking for more flight time? Monterey lies just outside the 50 NM requirement and counts towards your cross-country time! Looking for some practice flying IFR? Monterey and nearby airports offer various types of approaches. Reward your approaches with some great food! \nWe will be meeting at the FBO\, so please make sure to arrive and secure your aircraft no later than 7:00 PM. SUMMARY:Threat and Error Management
DESCRIPTION:Every flight presents its own unique challenges and risks. As pilots\, our responsibility is to identify these threats and find ways to mitigate them. Threat and Error Management (TEM) is an overarching safety management approach that assumes pilots will naturally make mistakes and encounter risky situations during flight operations. This model\, along with many others\, has been in use by professional aviators for decades. All pilots could benefit from learning this model and Safety Management Systems to significantly reduce the risk of an accident or incident. \nSan Carlos Flight Center has invited corporate pilot Brandan Dadoun\, to share tips for a general aviation audience. In his presentation\, Brandan will describe ways that this model and mindset can be used for every flight. He will incorporate this model through a variety of real-world case studies designed to emphasize the importance of TEM.  \nDon’t miss out on this presentation if you want to become a safer and more attentive pilot. \nBrandan Dadoun is a corporate pilot flying the Embraer Praetor 600. He has two type ratings and extensive flying experience throughout the country. Brandan completed all of his flight training at SCFC and has been involved in the community since 2015. He was formerly the Safety Seminar Program Director\, where he served in his role for many years. The Federal Aviation Administration recognized his efforts for improving aviation safety with awards in 2022 and 2023.

DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 6th\, make the quick hop over the Santa Cruz Mountains to Half Moon Bay for lunch\, where FOG enjoy the much-acclaimed restaurant\, Pilot Light right on the field. \nThe flight is quick from points around the Bay Area but is much faster and less stressful than navigating the traffic on Highway 92. This is a perfect flight to take friends and family on\, as it affords stunning views of the local coastline\, beaches\, and mountains in such a short flight. \nAfter landing\, taxi to the ramp on the northeast side of the airport. Secure your aircraft and we’ll walk through the gate to meet at Pilot Light at 12 PM. The restaurant is run by the same team behind the famed All Spice restaurant in San Mateo\, and revel in serving up unique brunch offerings. The restaurant has received a lot of positive praise in the few weeks after opening\, with diners noting the fun twists and fresh ingredients on classic dishes. (Learn more about the restaurant in this article). \nIt’s always hit or miss on picking a good time to visit Half Moon Bay.  Low fog and clouds may prevent VFR traffic from participating. DESCRIPTION:Pilots are human\, and humans make mistakes. It’s a part of life. But pilots sharing stories of the things they messed up in the past can be powerful way to help others think about the error chain and maybe prevent themselves from making that same mistake. In this way\, hangar talk can save lives. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites all human pilots to join us at this Pilot Confessional. Bring stores of mistakes you made\, what you did to understand it afterward\, and how you can help others learn to avoid doing the same thing.  The group discussion will be facilitated by SCFC Chief Pilot Dan Dyer\, with about 4\,000 thousands of hours of flight experience. It’s fair to say that over a career that long\, he’s made a few mistakes. Like everyone\, we all learn from our mistakes; and in this seminar\, Dan will start of the sharing session by recounting some of his worst flying mistakes and walk participants through the lessons he learned from them. Learn about how to prevent them from happening to you\, but also how to grow and become a better pilot as a result. \nA good pilot is always learning\, and it’s best if you can learn from the mistakes of others. Join us for this frank open dialog about mistakes that pilots can make and what we can all do to learn from them and prevent them. \n\n\n\nDan Dyer is the founder of the San Carlos Flight Center and currently the Chief Pilot. Among these are when rotating the propeller by hand\, always rotate it clockwise or never rotate the propeller clockwise. Which is it and why? \nSan Carlos Flight Center Charles Rudolf\, Maintenance Manager and IA will help clear the air when it comes to some of these common myths. He will share the real truth behind subjects such as why you shouldn’t run the starter beyond the time limit specified\, how to determine if a nick in the propeller is going to be an issue\, is there such a thing as having too much oil\, and many more. \nCharles earned his A&P in 2021 after attending AIM in Fremont and started working at the San Carlos Flight Center. He obtained his Inspection Authority\, IA\, in 2024. He enjoys the challenge of working on a variety of airplanes. More importantly\, he enjoys sharing his knowledge about airplane systems and engines with pilots.

Come join us on our Fly Out Group (FOG) trip to Paso Robles Municipal Airport (KPRB): home of the Estrella Warbirds Museum. This flight will happen on February 21. \nAt Estrella\, you will find numerous historical aircraft and military equipment spanning from World War II through the end of the Cold War. Are you more of a fan of cars and automotive history? Next door you will find the Woodland Auto Display. The car museum is included in the same ticket as the aviation museum so you will have two museums for the price of one! \nThis is a great opportunity to see some historic vehicles and build cross country time. We will first meet for brunch at Joe’s One-Niner Diner at the airport terminal at 10:30 am. After brunch\, we will taxi our planes to the other side of the airport where the museum is. The museum has space for us to park our airplanes. There will be no tie downs so make sure you bring chocks. The views during the cooler summer evenings will be spectacular\, and nothing beats the gorgeous sunsets. Are you looking to get an understanding of ways to conduct a weather briefing? \nIf you are a student pilot or recent pilot trying to better understand options for accessing weather for a flight then join us for this workshop to learn more about weather briefings. We will use a cross-country flight scenario and walk through the process of gathering relevant weather for a flight. We will show you how to get aviation weather information from www.aviationweather.gov\, ForeFlight\, 1800wxbrief.com and by speaking to a flight service station weather briefer. \nIf you want to better understand how all these sources of weather fit in a briefing\, join us for this interactive session. \nHerb Patten is the Assistant Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches the private pilot and instrument ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 4\,000 hours in more than 130 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. DESCRIPTION:CFI Herb Patten is inviting ground school students for a closer look at airplane engines and systems\, including details of the fuel\, ignition\, induction and more in this in-person workshop. This is your chance to look “under the cowling” in a way that goes deeper than your common preflight inspection. \nAs a pilot\, you learn about airplane engines and systems from the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. That information is supplemented by details from your specific Airplane Flight Manual. So what more do you need to know? You crank the starter and everything works. But how does it work and how do the various systems such as the fuel\, induction\, and ignition work together to keep the engine flying? Ever wonder how the fuel flows from the tank to the cylinders? Or what happens when the air intake filter becomes blocked? Or what are the purposes of those tubes coming out of the bottom of the engine? \nThis in-person seminar will be conducted using a Cessna training plane with the engine cowling removed so you can get an up-close appreciation of the components of a typical\, small single-engine airplane. Space is limited so don’t delay in signing up for this unique experience. You will walk away with a new depth of knowledge that most pilots don’t have.

This is your chance to experience mountain flying\, island-hopping\, and international operations all in one trip. \nThe trip begins on Thursday\, July 16\, when we set off from San Carlos en route to Seattle’s downtown Boeing Field (BFI) airport. On the flight up\, you’ll experience mountain flying as you cross the Siskiyou Range\, overflying the beautiful Trinity Alps and navigating around Mt. Shasta. On arrival into Seattle\, you’ll learn to navigate the complex Seattle airspace\, which is shared by a major international airport\, busy Class Delta airports\, and multiple military bases. In the afternoon\, we’ll return to the US\, where you’ll clear customs before setting off to Portland for the night (PDX). Don’t miss the chance to circle the 14000’ Mt. Rainier on the way south! \nThe final day of the trip allows you to depart at your leisure. You can visit the Evergreen Air and Space Museum in McMinnville (MMV) or spend time flying over Crater Lake. We’ll return to San Carlos by early evening\, capping off an incredible four days of flying! \nItinerary: \nThursday\, July 16:\nDepart San Carlos in the AM\nLunch at your leisure\nArrive Boeing Field – Seattle (BFI) mid-afternoon \nFriday\, July 17:\nSan Juan Island Hopping (AM)\nLunch – Roche Harbor\nFly to Vancouver (CYVR) – arrive mid-afternoon \nSaturday\, July 18:\nDepart Vancouver for Canada exploring – 9:00 AM\nLunch – Victoria Airport\nBorder crossing mid-afternoon\nArrive Portland International Airport (PDX) early evening \nSunday\, July 19:\nDepart at your leisure \nHotels:\nThe suggested hotels are as follows: \n\nJuly 18-19: Courtyard Seattle Downtown/Lake Union or Silver Cloud Hotel – Lake Union\nJuly 19-20: Lonsdale Quay Hotel or Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier\nJuly 20-21: Aloft Portland Airport\n\nPilot Requirements: \nAll participants must have a valid\, unexpired passport and FCC Radio Station License at the time of the trip. Pilots must be able to enter Canada. \nCost:\nThe trip is billed by SCFC at aircraft Hobbs time and the instructor’s daily rate. The rough estimated costs below are per person\, and assume two people sharing the airplane and CFI costs.\nCFI: 2 daily rates @ $900/day = $1\,800\nAirplane: 8 Hobbs hours @ $275/hr = $2\,200\nLodging: 3 nights @ $200/night = $600\nEstimated total cost: $4600 (excludes food\, incidentals\, ride-share at destinations without rental cars\, etc.) \nDeposit: \nThere is a $500 per person deposit to ensure interest. This deposit will be applied towards aircraft and instructor time. All pilots will be paired with an SCFC CFI in an SCFC Aircraft.
