SUMMARY:No Moon Flyers
DESCRIPTION:Every month\, our Full-Moon Flyers go on a night cross-country on the brightest night of the lunar cycle. It’s a great way to ease back into night currency. But when was the last time you did a night flight when it was really\, really dark? On a night with no moonlight? \nJoin the SCFC Flight Instructor team on Wednesday\, Nov 19th at 6:30 pm for a night flying experience designed to take pilots to local airports known for night illusions and tricky approaches. They could be hard to recognize because of limited ground lighting or because the airports themselves tend to create landing illusions on final approach. \nThis will be a unique one-of-a-kind training experience you won’t want to miss\, especially if you haven’t flown at night since you were a student pilot. Sharpen your night skills\, whether it be for meeting your night flight experience for a rating\, flying a new aircraft in the dark\, or just for proficiency. \nThe No-Moon Flyers training is space-limited\, so sign up now to reserve your spot with one of our instructors here at the Flight Center.

SUMMARY:IFR Currency – The Devil in the Details
DESCRIPTION:There is a thin overcast layer at 800 at your destination and you are ready to fly the ILS which shouldn’t be too hard with the light IFR conditions\, but are you legal? What is that regulation about IFR currency and what are the specifics? \nJoin Herb Patten\, Assistant Chief Pilot at San Carlos Flight Center\, for this “Devil in the Details” review of IFR currency. In this seminar Herb will take an in-depth look at the regulations instrument rated pilots must follow to maintain their IFR currency (e.g.\, six approaches within the last six months). What counts as an approach? What are the requirements for tracking and holding?. What is meant by “holding”? Can these tasks be flown in a simulator?  \nDon’t let the lengthily-worded regulations confuse you. This seminar should help you “clear the approach” as we clarify some of the ambiguity in the regulations. \n  \nHerb Patten is the Assistant Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches the instrument ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 4\,500 hours in more than 140 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2025\, Herb was named a Distinguished Flight Instructor by AOPA. \n  \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2023 as a Distinguished Flight School for the third year in a row. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. Our seminars are free to watch when attended in person at our facility in San Carlos but live streaming and viewing recorded seminars are exclusively available to members. Click here or contact an SCFC member service rep at (650) 946-1700 for more information about online access to our web library of over 500 recorded safety seminars and live-streamed content.

SUMMARY:Chief Pilot Tells All – How to Get a CFI Job
DESCRIPTION:It seems like there are two groups of people who become flight instructors: pilots who love to share the art and skill of flying with new students\, and pilots who love to share the art and skill of flying with new students while building hours toward a career in the airlines. \nIf you’re a new instructor\, you may be facing the challenge of finding a school to align yourself with.  The industry fluctuates wildly\, with sometimes too many instructors and sometimes not enough.  In the past year\, flight schools have been flooded with new instructors as airlines temporarily shut down hiring\, leaving many instructors teaching years past the time they originally thought.  So what’s a new CFI to do?  How do you get your foot in the door? \nWe asked SCFC Chief Pilot Dan Dyer to share some of his experiences on the hiring side\, to give insights that may help new CFIs better position themselves in the tight job market.  He’s been a flight instructor himself for over twenty years and has been hiring instructors at San Carlos Flight Center for thirteen years of that.  He’ll review how the Flight Center looks for new instructors\, some common deficiencies he’s seen in CFI applications\, and help CFI applicants put their best foot forward.  How to handle in-person and Zoom interviews?  How to come prepared for a flight test?  What research to do before you apply\, and what to ask for during negotiations. \nThis is an interesting look behind the scenes of one General Aviation business.  It is designed mostly for new instructors\, but anyone may find these tips useful in future job searches.  Join us for a better understanding of what makes a quality flight instructor. \nDan Dyer is the founder of the San Carlos Flight Center and has built the motto of Safety\, Community\, and Adventure for over 12 years.  Dan was an instructor for over 15 years\, accumulated over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics.  Find out more about Dan at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at dan@sancarlosflight.com \nThis seminar will be open to all\, both in-person and virtually. While we encourage in-person attendance\, those watching virtually can join the livestream page at 7 PM PST. You may utilize the “Ask a Question” button and submit questions to the presenter.  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2024 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:Full Moon Flyers: Hollister
DESCRIPTION:Need to practice night flying\, or just want to gain more experience at night? Come join us for dinner at Seabrisa’s Eatery in Hollister (CVH) on Thursday\, December 4th at 7 PM. Enjoy a great meal\, and get night current before taking your family on flights over the Holidays! \nOn the way down\, soak in the gorgeous sunset over the coastal mountains before descending into Hollister Airport. Make sure to remain clear of the San Jose final approach course\, and consider talking to NorCal Approach to have an extra set of eyes looking out for you. Park in transient parking\, and then walk across the street to the local airport restaurant – Seabrisa’s Eatery! A local favorite for many pilots in the area\, they’re known for their unique flavors and vegetables grown from many of the local farms. \nAfter dinner\, Hollister is a great place to work on night landings or fly to San Jose (SJC) to complete your night requirements there. With big runways\, it’s easy to make the landings a stop-and-go\, and you’ll enjoy the challenge of flying alongside jet traffic. \nEveryone is welcome to join us\, so RSVP below and we’ll see you at the event.

SUMMARY:Seaplane Rating – When\, Why\, Where and What to Expect
DESCRIPTION:Getting your first rating as a pilot is a major milestone and with it you enjoy many privileges that land-locked humans don’t have. You can fly to many destinations directly that are arduous to get to when using conventional transportation. That first rating is often for a Airplane Single Engine Land. But what if you are yearning for an adventure to land on a lake or other body of water? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Commercial pilot Sal Valdes that just recently obtained her seaplane rating along with Mary McEnroe\, recipient of the Women Making a Splash scholarship to share their experience with flying seaplanes. In this seminar they will share the reasons why they embarked on a seaplane rating. Sal and Mary will provide insight into where they did their training\, how to prepare for the seaplane rating it and what the training involved. \nIf you have ever dreamed about landing on water and experiencing the additional freedom provided by a seaplane rating\, please join us for this event. It just may inspire you to take that step to advancing your skills by adding a seaplane rating to your pilot certificate.

SUMMARY:Aviation Colleges Panel
DESCRIPTION:There are many great options for students looking for a college aviation program. Many colleges offer programs designed to prepare students to join the aviation industry by providing training to become pilots or air traffic controllers. These colleges operate under FAR Part 141 and provide an FAA-approved curriculum. \nTo aid local high school students\, SCFC will be hosting a panel discussion on collegiate aviation programs. We have invited in pilots from a handful of the most prominent aviation college programs in the country to share their experiences. How do the programs differ? What should a new student know when evaluating these programs? Come and ask our panelists about their reasons for selecting the school they chose and how their experience lived up to the expectations.

SUMMARY:Investigating Aircraft Ownership at San Carlos Flight Center
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nLike many flying clubs\, some members of San Carlos Flight Center have purchased a plane and added it to the Club’s fleet. The decision may be tied to a number of factors: pride of ownership\, a desire to get more involved in aviation\, to learn even more about aircraft maintenance and upkeep\, and for some people – income tax advantages. \nHave you ever considered owning a plane? Because of the size of the investment and the risks associated\, it helps to learn as much as you can about the process before diving in. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Chief Pilot and airplane owner Dan Dyer to share his experiences as an airplane owner\, and working with club member who owner their own planes. Sixteen years ago\, Dan bought his first airplane and began the process of learning how to own and manage airplanes.  Since then\, he’s purchased a total of 7 planes\, some for personal use\, but many became part of the Flight Center fleet.  In this seminar\, Dan will discuss how to choose the right airplane for your mission profile\, how to navigate the purchase process\, and what to consider when inspecting a potential airplane. \nPrivate ownership of an airplane is exciting but comes with many costs and challenges for a new owner. Join us to hear how having your plane in a club fleet can offset your costs and tap into the Flight Center’s professional management. \nIf you ever considered purchasing your own airplane and want to hear firsthand about airplane ownership and learn from the experiences of others\, join us for this unique opportunity to become enlightened about airplane ownership.\n\n\nDan Dyer is the founder of the San Carlos Flight Center and currently the Chief Pilot. He founded the Flight Center on the motto of Safety\, Community\, and Adventure.  Dan was an instructor for 15 years\, accumulated over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics.  Find out more about Dan at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at dan@sancarlosflight.com\n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Cross-Country Planning
DESCRIPTION:As pilots\, we must know how to accurately plan for a cross-country flight. Join us for this in-person workshop at San Carlos Flight Center for a hands-on and scenario based learning experience. Senior CFI Herb Patten will show attendees the important elements of successful cross-country flight planning and walk you through your planning of a flight. Throughout the workshop Herb will incorporate various situations and challenges\, and provide direct support. \nThe Cross-Country Flight Planning workshop will be based on a trip between two Bay Area airports. This is an interactive workshop with participants working in small teams to successfully plan a flight and create a navigation log that could be used to make the flight. It’s as real as we can make it\, while students work through preflight planning decisions and factor in weather and fuel requirements.\n\nJoin us in-person if you would like some practice with the flight planning process including using faa.gov to look up NOTAMS and TFRs\, reviewing airport information available in the AFD and other sources\, creating nav logs\, determining fuel requirements\, performing weight and balance calculations. \nDue to the nature of the workshop\, this is an in-person event. No live stream will be available.

SUMMARY:Preparing for your FAA Practical Test – Straight Talk from DPE Jim Higgins
DESCRIPTION:It’s the day that every pilot awaits; the transition from student pilot to certificated private pilot. For most\, the FAA Practical Test or “checkride” is viewed as a terrifying but necessary right of passage. A Designated Pilot Examiners (DPE) must test each student thoroughly on their aviation knowledge\, control and mastery of the aircraft\, and risk awareness and judgment. Even if the student has been perfectly prepared by their instructor\, the checkride is still the unknown and a point of concern. Let’s change that. With a guided look in the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards document\, any student pilot can better understand what standards they will be held to and how to ace their checkride. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites local DPE Jim Higgins to help applicants understand what can be expected during a practical test and learn what they can do to be prepared and confident on their big day. In this seminar\, Jim will relay what pilots need to know before the checkride\, and share tips from his previous experiences from other checkrides to make sure the same issues don’t arise on your checkride. We have also asked him to review the different maneuvers and procedures that a DPE can request from a student pilot during the checkride so they can be ready to tackle anything. \nIf you are a pilot that wants to be prepared\, confident\, and know what to expect on your checkride; you don’t want to miss this unique seminar. \nJim Higgins is a DPE in the San Jose FSDO with 35 years and 10\,000 hours of CFI\, Charter and Airline experience.  He currently splits his time between giving checkrides and flight instructing as a CFI from his home airports of San Carlos and Palo Alto.  When he’s not flying\, Jim likes to escape up to Tahoe skiing in the winter and camping in the summer.

SUMMARY:Flying Across the US\, Part 1: A low-hour VFR pilot’s perspective
DESCRIPTION:Four months after receiving his pilot’s license\, SCFC member Bob Turcott embarked on a multi-week\, around-the-country solo flight. In this presentation\, Bob will cover topics such as reasons to consider making such a trip; suggestions for low-hour pilots to develop the necessary proficiency; useful gear; cool airports; his worst decisions; helpful attitudes; and a few life lessons that were encountered along the way. \nAnyone who pushes heavy objects – such as planes – risks Achilles tendon rupture\, especially if done in a thoughtless way. Unfortunately\, this is what Bob experienced\, 2\,800 miles from home. Since the consequences of this injury are severe\, even potentially career-limiting for pilots\, Bob will review this clinical entity in detail. In the process\, he’ll touch on useful general information\, such as an approach to evaluating competing treatment options\, as well as information that’s of particular interest to pilots: how to reduce the risk of tendon rupture while moving a plane. \nAbout the speaker: Bob first soloed as a high school student in a used\, 1970’s era hang glider he acquired through a classified ad. After a handful of flights\, it became apparent even to him that self-teaching was probably not the wisest approach\, so he set aside his glider and instead focused on ground school\, eventually earning a PhD in Electrical Engineering/Signal Processing from Columbia and subsequently an MD from Stanford. He went on to become Board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. In the process\, he resumed hang gliding\, but with modern equipment and formal instruction. His personal best was a four-hour flight with 3000’ altitude gain above launch in the foothills of the Sierras. Though no longer professionally engaged\, Bob’s fond memories of his career include working with veterans as a general cardiologist\, conceptualizing and implementing novel approaches to chronic implantable hemodynamic sensing\, and contributing to the development of a diffuse optical tomographic system for the real-time detection and decoding of brain activity using a noninvasive\, wearable device. Physical ability permitting\, Bob hopes to obtain instrument\, glider\, and seaplane ratings\, explore light aerobatics and backcountry flying\, and complete the around-the-country trip he began in 2025.

SUMMARY:Cape Cod to San Carlos: Westbound Across America
DESCRIPTION:SCFC member Jerry Birn was living vicariously through the cross-country adventures of his friend\, SCFC member Bob Turcott\, as Bob winged his way across America in BYF41 (N1483L). Then out of nowhere\, lightning struck (figuratively)\, Bob tore his achilles and the plane was stuck on Cape Cod. Recognizing a unique opportunity\, Jerry flew the plane back to San Carlos in three and one-half days\, logging true “cross-country” time. \nJerry is an instrument-rated commercial pilot. He will focus on the aeronautical decision making that went into planning for and making a fast trip across the country\, including the unique challenges of weather\, unfamiliar terrain\, new airports\, and setting and continually reevaluating reasonable personal safety limits. Whether you are a new pilot interested in venturing farther afield from the Bay Area\, or a seasoned pilot ready to embark on longer\, multi-day flights\, each of the five legs of Jerry’s flight offers interesting lessons. Join us to hear about Jerry’s unexpected adventure from Cape Cod back to the Bay Area. \nYou surely won’t want to miss this seminar if you are planning to go on a long cross-country trip\, improve your flight planning\, or you just want to learn more about the adventures of a fellow pilot. \nJerry Birn\, a retired lawyer\, earned his private pilot and commercial certificates in the late 1970s. After a brief hiatus of four decades\, he returned to flying three years ago under Herb Patten’s guidance and has participated in the flight center’s summer trips to Colorado and the Pacific Northwest the past two summers. He still believes in paper approach charts and thinks that GPS is cheating.

SUMMARY:Under the Cowling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:CFI Herb Patten ground school student into the SCFC maintenance hangar for a closer look at airplane engines and systems\, including details of the fuel\, ignition\, induction and more in this in-person workshop. This is your chance to look “under the cowling” in a way that goes deeper than your common preflight inspection. \nAs a pilot\, you learn about airplane engines and systems from the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. That information is supplemented by details from your specific Airplane Flight Manual. So what more do you need to know? You crank the starter and everything works. But how does it work and how do the various systems such as the fuel\, induction\, and ignition work together to keep the engine flying? Ever wonder how the fuel flows from the tank to the cylinders? Or what happens when the air intake filter becomes blocked? Or what are the purposes of those tubes coming out of the bottom of the engine? \nThis in-person seminar will be conducted using a Cessna training plane with the engine cowling removed so you can get an up-close appreciation of the components of a typical\, small single-engine airplane. Space is limited so don’t delay in signing up for this unique experience. You will walk away with a new depth of knowledge that most pilots don’t have.

Monterey Airport doesn’t have a transient parking ramp\, but we will park at the Del Monte Aviation FBO. After parking\, we’ll grab a quick ride-share to the restaurant. This upscale restaurant is a great destination to treat a new passenger to the joys of flying or to treat yourself to a great flight. \nAre you a student pilot looking for more flight time? Monterey lies just outside the 50 NM requirement and counts towards your cross-country time! Looking for some practice flying IFR? Monterey and nearby airports offer various types of approaches. Reward your approaches with some great food! \nWe will be meeting at the FBO\, so please make sure to arrive and secure your aircraft no later than 7:00 PM. Make sure to RSVP so we have an accurate headcount!

SUMMARY:Threat and Error Management
DESCRIPTION:Every flight presents its own unique challenges and risks. As pilots\, our responsibility is to identify these threats and find ways to mitigate them. Threat and Error Management (TEM) is an overarching safety management approach that assumes pilots will naturally make mistakes and encounter risky situations during flight operations. This model\, along with many others\, has been in use by professional aviators for decades. All pilots could benefit from learning this model and Safety Management Systems to significantly reduce the risk of an accident or incident. \nSan Carlos Flight Center has invited corporate pilot Brandan Dadoun\, to share tips for a general aviation audience. In his presentation\, Brandan will describe ways that this model and mindset can be used for every flight. He will incorporate this model through a variety of real-world case studies designed to emphasize the importance of TEM.  \nDon’t miss out on this presentation if you want to become a safer and more attentive pilot. \nBrandan Dadoun is a corporate pilot flying the Embraer Praetor 600. He has two type ratings and extensive flying experience throughout the country. Brandan completed all of his flight training at SCFC and has been involved in the community since 2015. He was formerly the Safety Seminar Program Director\, where he served in his role for many years. The Federal Aviation Administration recognized his efforts for improving aviation safety with awards in 2022 and 2023.

SUMMARY:FOG Lunch: Half Moon Bay
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, February 6th\, make the quick hop over the Santa Cruz Mountains to Half Moon Bay for lunch\, where FOG enjoy the much-acclaimed restaurant\, Pilot Light right on the field. \nThe flight is quick from points around the Bay Area but is much faster and less stressful than navigating the traffic on Highway 92. This is a perfect flight to take friends and family on\, as it affords stunning views of the local coastline\, beaches\, and mountains in such a short flight. \nAfter landing\, taxi to the ramp on the northeast side of the airport. Secure your aircraft and we’ll walk through the gate to meet at Pilot Light at 12 PM. The restaurant is run by the same team behind the famed All Spice restaurant in San Mateo\, and revel in serving up unique brunch offerings. The restaurant has received a lot of positive praise in the few weeks after opening\, with diners noting the fun twists and fresh ingredients on classic dishes. (Learn more about the restaurant in this article). \nIt’s always hit or miss on picking a good time to visit Half Moon Bay.  Low fog and clouds may prevent VFR traffic from participating. If this is the case\, the FOG coordinator will advise those who registered if a change is needed. \nPlease RSVP below so we can inform the restaurant of our headcount. We hope to see you in Half Moon Bay on Friday\, Feb 6th!
