SUMMARY:My 172 May Help Me Survive
DESCRIPTION:If disaster strikes\, you might be forced to land the airplane in the middle of nowhere. What happens next? You try to call for help\, but nothing shows up. It’s getting cold outside as night falls\, how can we take advantage of the remaining pieces of my damaged aircraft beside me? Taking apart your Cessna 172 may sound insane\, but it could save your life. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Michael Dutton a Private Pilot and survival expert on how to handle an emergency landing\, and how to deal with the NTSB afterwards. However\, what about the step in between? Let’s say you’ve made it through the crash safely\, but now you have to survive long enough for rescuers to find you. A packed survival kit will vastly improve your chances\, but there is another great resource available to all pilots: the aircraft itself. From the avionics on board to the structural components themselves\, the plane you flew in on can be lifesaving. \nThis is open to all pilots who are wanting a more unique take on survival operations\, and how to take advantage of everything you have. If you want to stay safe on all your future trips\, you won’t want to miss this seminar. \nMichael Dutton is a Private Pilot\, rated in both helicopter and fixed wing aircraft\, with over two hundred hours. He is also an Eagle Scout from Troop 132 and has spent years as a first aid and survival instructor. When he isn’t flying or working\, he still goes camping with his friends from his old Troop. \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2018 as the best flight school in the West. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. Space is often limited so it is important to sign up early. SCFC members may choose to watch the seminar live over the web at home\, or recorded at a later date. SUMMARY:Full Moon FBO Pizza Party at Sacramento International
DESCRIPTION:Feb 8th is the Full Moon and this month we will fly to Sacramento International for a “Pizza Party” at Sacramento International Jet Center. \n \nOpening as the Sacramento Metropolitan Airport in 1967\, SMF was the first public use airport west of the Mississippi built completely from the ground up. Initially served by five airlines and deemed a risky investment\, the airport quickly proved skeptics wrong surpassing one million passengers during its first year of operation. \n \nEach month\, several FOG pilots take part in the Full Moon Flyers dinner flight. Some are out of night currency\, so they fly alone or bring along a CFI. Some are night current and bring along a friend. Some are student pilots with their CFI\, fulfilling the night cross country requirement in a more fun and social way.  So come along and join us for a social group dinner\, followed by a beautifully moonlit flight back home. \n \nPlease sign up below so we can get an accurate headcount and keep you in the loop with updates. \nFOG is for EVERYONE.  You do not have to be a San Carlos Flight Center member to attend. \nPlease note that you must be logged into the website in order to sign up \n( see above right corner of website  Login  /  Register ) \nContact us with any questions at flyoutgroup@gmail.com or (650) 946-1700.

SUMMARY:Gaining Confidence in Your Flight Training: The Use of Home Flight Simulators
DESCRIPTION:Most people are used to the idea of school-based flight simulators in flight training\, especially for an instrument rating. But there are many great reasons to take advantage of home-based flight simulators to build confidence and enhance your training. Flight simulators are easy to use\, extremely helpful\, and can cater to any situation. \nSCFC invites Brandan Dadoun a Student Pilot\, and John Lindstrom a Private Pilot\, who both have actively used flight simulators throughout their flying careers\, to share how it’s benefited them in becoming better pilots. In this seminar\, we will cover the vast amount of flight simulation applications that you can use at home; how to set it up; and how to get the most out of it. Flight simulation has been around for a long time and has proved extremely helpful for many aspiring to become a better pilot. Along with flight simulation being an excellent procedural trainer\, pilots can also practice their radio skills by talking with real Air Traffic Controllers. The possibilities are endless. \nIf you want to become a better pilot\, gain confidence\, and discover many new things that you might have never known; you do not want to miss this seminar. \n  \nBrandan Dadoun is a Student Pilot and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator\, Brandan has completed the majority of his flight training at SCFC; with over 70 flight hours. He is an advocate for getting youth involved in aviation\, and is actively involved in many aviation programs. He is an active volunteer at the Hiller Aviation Museum\, and previously an active volunteer in the local EAA chapter. He is excited to teach people who are ready to learn. \nJohn Lindstorm is a Private Pilot with over 150 hours\, he holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University. John Lindstrom began working in California in software development since the early 1990s. Growing up in a Navy family\, he ran into quite a few pilots and realized that\, without exception\, they were all simply put\, “cool”. Before taking his discovery flight\, he would look upwards on clear days and just enjoy the scenery\, but since that day\, he couldn’t help but to be in the sky too. \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2019 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:Hazards of Frost and Icing
DESCRIPTION:Flying along\, you might think it’s a beautiful crisp winter day until suddenly you take a peek at the beautiful scenery below and see frost on your wingtip. What are you going to do next? Do you know all the hazards of frost and icing? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Dave Kramer\, an experienced instrument rated pilot\, and avid weather specialist to talk about how frost and icing can affect an airplane. With atmospheric moisture\, comes the hazards of icing. Other than a thunderstorm\, nothing else is so detrimental to flight. California\, because of it’s warmer winters\, is notorious for icing. How can we predict it and where can we find it? In this seminar\, anyone will be able to gain a better understanding for how frost and ice forms\, how to avoid it\, and what to do if you get it. \nJoin Dave as he discusses these important topics from a pilot’s viewpoint. If you are an aspiring IFR pilot or a seasoned Instrument rated pro\, you won’t want to miss this seminar. \n  \nDave Kramer MD is an instrument rated\, tailwheel and high performance endorsed private pilot as well as a basic and instrument ground instructor with an interest in weather. He has been flying since 2012\, has over 900 hours of which over 300 have been in the IFR system. He also enjoys flying at night as well as flying in the LA area \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:IFR Confidence Skills\, Knowing how to Analyze Approach Plates
DESCRIPTION:Flying IFR brings its own sets of challenges. From managing your navigation to handling the radios\, and flying the approach into your destination airport. As pilots\, we need to be familiar with all the necessary information about our flight before we fly it. Before you fly your next IFR flight\, join us to learn more about approach plates\, and how you can gain the most amount of knowledge and information out of them. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Brian Elliot\, a Senior CFI\, and seasoned IFR Pilot\, to discuss how a pilot can retain the most amount of information about an approach plate in the shortest amount of time\, and most efficiently. Flying along in the clouds\, and glancing down to look at the approach plate for the first time can be uncomfortable and nerve-racking. In this seminar\, learn how to digest all the information you’ll need for the IFR approach into your destination. \nIf you are a seasoned IFR pro\, or just getting into it; you don’t want to miss out on this excellent opportunity to fly the approach your best\, and learn the most out of an approach plate. \n  \nBrian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer\, a software developer\, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He regularly presents at San Carlos Flight Center safety seminars and has a reputation for making complex concepts easy to learn and understand. SUMMARY:Whats Happening at San Carlos Airport?
DESCRIPTION:Keeping an airport strong takes a lot of hard work. The airplane owners and pilots of San Carlos Airport are fortunate to have a great team from San Mateo County maintaining and protecting the airport. Issues are addressed instantly\, from runway surface issues to refurbishing the hangars and limiting neighboring construction against flight operations. \nSCFC periodically invites SQL Airport Managers to update the pilot community on anything that can impact the safety of flight operations. What upcoming closures can pilots expect? What changes can pilots expect to operating rules and procedures? What is the status of work to improve traffic pattern coverage by the contract control tower? \nIf you fly at San Carlos Airport\, this presentation will bring you current with the latest news and information for pilots coming from the SQL Airport Management office. \n  \nSan Carlos Airport is owned and operated by San Mateo County. Airport managers oversee and support both county airports\, Half Moon Bay and San Carlos\, with primary offices at San Carlos. The airport gets better every year\, and the manager oversees a great number of development projects to improve service to pilots and for the county. SUMMARY:Landing Secrets Revealed
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \nIn some ways\, learning to fly is largely about learning to land. Pilots of small planes need to perform at least one safe landing on nearly every flight. It’s the type of skill that is learned once\, and then perfected for the rest of a pilot’s life. How are your landings? Would you like to hear a few secrets to landing that can help you improve your landing ability? \nJoin Chief Pilot Dan Dyer for discussion about landing philosophy and some insider tips on perfecting your landings. In this seminar\, learn about the two halves to the flare\, the actual role of the pilot (you may be surprised)\, how important it is to look good\, and the critical importance of time spent at altitude playing with the horizon. \nThis presentation may be of value to student pilots working on learning to land for the first time\, but also may offer insights to experienced pilots looking to take their landing ability to the next level. If you want your passengers to be happy about your landings\, do not miss this seminar. \nDan Dyer is a flight instructor and Chief Pilot of San Carlos Flight Center. He has been instructing for 14 years\, has over 4\,000 flight hours and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics. DESCRIPTION:  \n**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \nFlying to a new airport can bring its own sets of challenges\, risks\, and new procedures. For student pilots trying to branch out of their home airport\, Hayward Executive Airport in the East Bay might seem the most suitable. What airport information is crucial to operating safely at Hayward? What specific things do you need to watch out for? What are the hot spots or things that may be confusing to a student or new pilot? \nHerb Pattern\, SCFC Assistant Chief Pilot will share his experiences of years of operating in and out of Hayward’s Class D airspace. He will discuss local procedures\, pattern operations\, special procedures\, and where you can retain all this information for your flight. He also has samples of the radio calls you’ll hear when operating in the Hayward ATC environment\, to help student pilots become familiar with important differences. After attending this seminar\, students will have more confidence in operating safely at Hayward. \nWe encourage any student pilot to attend\, and pilots of higher rating to attend too. Do not miss out on this seminar\, learn how to gain confidence\, operate safer\, and know your A game. \n  \nHerb Patten is the Assistant Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center. He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has over 1\,500 hours and flown into at least 120 different California airports. SUMMARY:NORDO In the Bay Area: How to get Back on the Ground Safely
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \nWhat might seem like a normal flight can change in an instant.  Radio failures happen in the least opportune time\, and your best-laid plans can change instantaneously.  How are you going to handle the unexpected? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Michael Dutton and Stephen Heesacker CFI to talk about what happens when your radios fail you outside and inside of the SFO Mode C vail and how to get back home safely.  As pilots\, we normally only have one or two plans in mind\, one to our destination\, and one to an alternative airport given adverse conditions. However\, what we do not plan for is what happens when our radios fail.  We all have been taught to squawk 7600\, and try to fly back in range of the light gun; but is that really the safest\, and most efficient way to do so? \nCome join for this unique opportunity to gain a new perspective on how to handle radio emergencies in flight.  We invite all pilots to attend so we can be safer in the skies.\n\n\nStephen Heesacker is a flight instructor at San Carlos Flight Center.  For Stephen\, flying has always been a joy. He has a degree in Physics and Aeronautics at San Jose State University and has competed on the San Jose Precision Flight Team and United States Precision Flight Team.  Find out more about Stephen at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at stephen@sancarlosflight.com. \nMichael Dutton is a Private Pilot\, rated in both helicopter and fixed wing aircraft\, with over two hundred hours. He is also an Eagle Scout from Troop 132 and has spent years as a first aid and survival instructor. When he isn’t flying or working\, he still goes camping with his friends from his old Troop.\n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \nPlanning for a long cross-country flight involves a lot of thinking ahead. There’s weather analysis\, route selection\, and planning for alternatives. There’s also the need to estimate flight time and fuel burn to meet FAA regulations for minimum onboard fuel. Seems easy right? \nThe only way to determine the amount of fuel you’ll need\, is if you’ve already solved a host of other calculations. To be accurate\, you’ll need to know ground distance\, forecast winds\, and aircraft performance information. You’ll also need to make some choices about altitude and route. Most pilots complete these series of calculations using grid sheets to guide their calculations\, with cryptic columns label such as TH\, DEV\, CH\, and ETE. At San Carlos Flight Center\, we use a Cross-Country Flight Log sheet that makes it easy to understand the sources of information and the flow of calculations. \nIn this Ground School Refresher seminar\, Flight Instructors Herb Patten and Dan Dyer will walk students through the variety of calculations need for each leg of flight that lead up to the final Fuel Needed number. If you are a new flight student confused about cross-country flight calculations or just need a refresher\, please tune in. He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015\, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors. \nDan Dyer is a flight instructor and Chief Pilot of San Carlos Flight Center. He has been instructing for 15 years\, has over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics. Find out more about Dan at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at dan@sancarlosflight.com \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2019 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. Space is often limited so it is important to sign up early. SCFC members may choose to watch the seminar live over the web at home\, or recorded at a later date. SUMMARY:Ground School Refresher: VFR Charts
DESCRIPTION:  \n**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n  \nDo you know how to identify where certain VFR reporting waypoints are on a chart? Do you know if the airport you are landing at has an operating beacon? Do you know if the airport you are landing at has pilot controlled lighting\, or lighting at all? Or maybe if you just want a VFR chart refresher\, this is the place for you to be. \nVFR charts pack an extraordinary amount of material and represent a 3-dimensional world of terrain and airspaces in 2 dimensions.  They describe graphically the earth as it looks to us pilots from the air. And no matter how much we study them and how good we get at interpreting them there is always something new or some little nuance that we didn’t realize. Lastly\, they are fun.  Who doesn’t enjoy looking at a map\, especially an aviation one? \nJoin Russell Bowerman a CFI as he gives a ground school refresher. He will actively involve the audience in this fun review of VFR charts and point out interesting facts that you then can go out and impress your friends. \n  \nRussell Bowerman has always maintained an interest in aviation\, visiting aviation museums\, taking sightseeing flights\, and staying up to date on all the newest fighter jets and airliners.  After receiving his Private Pilot Certificate in 2018\, he decided to make a career of it\, attaining his Commercial and CFI ratings. Russell has been teaching and loving it ever since. Beyond flying\, he really enjoys traveling and feels lucky to meet new people and learn about their diverse backgrounds in the process of flight training. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Emergency Signaling: ELT’s and PLB’s
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \nPersonal Locator Beacons (PLBs) are becoming cheaper and more reliable. Why would a pilot need a PLB if they already have an onboard ELT? How would a PLB help a pilot in an emergency? What is a PLB anyway? \nIn this seminar\, Herb Patten\, SCFC’s Assistant Chief Pilot will explain the critical differences between PLBs and ELTs. He will review the history of the emergence of the regulations on ELTs\, review accident data that highlights the problems and challenges of the original ELT design\, describe the enhancements offered in the new 406-MHz ELT and how they function\, and provide an update on proposed regulations for ELT requirements. \nMost pilots are aware of the onboard Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) in their personal or rented airplane. Most know that the older models transmitted a distress signal on 121.5-MHz in the event of a hard landing. But how many know what frequency the new models transmit on? How does an ELT differ from a PLB? Do you know the differences in who receives your distress signal and how quickly? \nDon’t miss this seminar if you want to be prepared in post-emergency landing situations\, and how you can increase your chances of surviving through the use of ELT’s and PLB’s. \nHerb Patten is the Assistant Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center. He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has over 1\,500 hours and flown into at least 120 different California airports. SUMMARY:American Flight 587 and the Importance of VA
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \nSometimes we think certain things would never happen\, until they do. For the majority of us pilots\, we try to always prepare for the worst\, but hope for the best. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Advanced Ground Instructor Michel Vidal-Naquet to talk about the investigation of American Airlines Flight 587 that crashed into a suburban neighborhood in New York in 2001. The NTSB determined that after encountering the wake turbulence of a preceding 747\, the first officer applied a series of full alternating rudder inputs that led to structural failure and the separation of the vertical stabilizer. The aircraft was traveling at approximately 250 knots\, that is 20 knots below VA for the Airbus A300 “What? But I thought flying below VA protected against structural damage?” This accident revealed a general misconception of the term VA within the pilot community. Does flying at or below VA always “guarantee” protection? \nIn this presentation\, we will go over the accident and describe different contributing factors to the crash\, as identified by the NTSB. We will then examine the concept of maneuvering speed and take a look at how VA is intricately defined by the regulations. Finally\, we will review implications for GA pilots. We recommend all pilots to attend as we learn from this seminar and improve our safety in flight in the future. \nMichel Vidal-Naquet is an advanced ground instructor and an instrument-rated private pilot with about 680 flight hours. He started flying in 2013 after settling in the Bay area to work as a computer scientist and engineer. His passion for aviation began during his early childhood when his family first took him on international flights. He brings a scientific point of view to his flying\, and is always learning. \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2019 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:Radio Communication Basics
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n  \n\n\n\nFlying through SF Bay Area airspace requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills.  And yet\, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training. Usually\, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them\, both good and bad. Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school\, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. \nThis presentation is meant to bridge the gap\, to help newer pilots understand the structure of radio calls and how to improve their own radio skills\, with plenty of chance to practice their skills.  Dan Dyer a CFI will walk participants through a foundation of radio communication phraseology and use\, from the basics through advanced ATC services. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. \nDon’t miss out on this seminar if you are struggling with your radio communications\, or want to improve your radio.\n\n\n  \n  \nDan Dyer is a flight instructor and Chief Pilot of San Carlos Flight Center.  He has been instructing for 15 years\, has over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction.
