SUMMARY:IFR Departure Procedures
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will be held in person at SCFC\, attendance is free and open to all. Web Members will still be able to access our seminars online\, both live and recorded. Click here to learn more about the transition. \n  \nInterested in learning more about advanced instrument related topics? Check out more of these seminars available on our growing Members Only Seminar Library which is available for viewing by Web Members. Click here to view. \n  \n\n\n\nIFR departures are one of the most poorly-understood and under-taught topics in IFR flight. The process of getting safely from the surface\, avoiding surrounding obstacles\, to the safety of the en route IFR  structure\, all while operating at maximum performance configuration\, lower speeds\, and high pitch attitudes can be daunting. IFR airports can have many different departure procedures. Do you know which one you can expect? \nIn this safety seminar\, CFI Brian Eliot will review the selection of instrument departure procedures. He will provide a publication roadmap to these procedures and review the critical safety items\, as well as what to typically expect in common practice. This program is a must for pilots working on their instrument rating\, or working to stay current with instrument departures. \n \n\n\nBrian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s Assistant Chief Pilot and resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer\, a software developer\, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He regularly presents at San Carlos Flight Center safety seminars and has a reputation for making complex concepts easy to learn and understand. \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2023 as a Distinguished Flight School for the third year in a row. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. Our seminars are free to watch when attended in person at our facility in San Carlos but live streaming and viewing recorded seminars are exclusively available to members. Click here or contact an SCFC member service rep at (650) 946-1700 for more information about online access to our web library of over 500 recorded safety seminars and live-streamed content.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Flight Instrument Failures
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will be held in-person at SCFC\, attendance is free and open to all. Web Members will still be able to access our seminars online\, both live and recorded. Click here to learn more about the transition. \n  \nInterested in learning more advance topics? Check out our growing seminar library available to Web Members on our Members Only Seminar Library. Click here to view. \n  \n  \nThe flight instruments are a rich source of information for pilots. They are used both in visual weather conditions and instrument conditions\, but are essential in instrument conditions. Most of the time they just work\, but what happens when they don’t? \nA key to understanding how flight instruments can fail is to first have knowledge of the underlying design and operation of the systems. The next step is to look at failure points and then understand how these failures will manifest themselves on the flight instruments. \nThis seminar will explore the inner workings of the flight instruments with a focus on points of failure and the resultant impact on the flight instruments. Join us to learn more about these essential systems and the failure modes. \n \n\n\nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 2\,500 hours in more than 130 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2023\, Herb was named a Distinguished Flight Instructor by AOPA. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2023 as a Distinguished Flight School for the third year in a row. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:Destination Catalina Island
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will be held in person at SCFC\, attendance is free and open to all. Web Members will still be able to access our seminars online\, both live and recorded. Click here to learn more about the transition. \nInterested in learning about more exciting destinations? Check out our growing Members Only Seminar Library with over 500 recorded presentations\, many which include highlighting unique and aeronautically challenging destinations. Click here to view. \n  \n\n\n\nCatalina Island\, off the coast of Southern California\, offers stunning Pacific island vistas\, miles of hiking trails\, and a tiny runway perched precariously on the top of a dynamited mountaintop.  With the beautiful surroundings and scenery\, pilots can easily get distracted from what’s below. \nTo better understand the flight challenges associated with this airport\, San Carlos Flight Center invites Commercial Pilot Brandan Dadoun to discuss what pilots need to know when flying into Catalina. In this seminar\, he will cover what unique flight planning considerations are needed when venturing to Catalina\, including local arrival and departure procedures\, open water flying considerations\, route selection for IFR and VFR pilots\, and transiting the LA Special Flight Rules area.  He will review weight and balance\, fuel planning\, and discuss the  facilities\, services\, and associated fees at the Airport in the Sky (KAVX) atop the island.  There are lots of things to do once you are there\, and he will share some of those highlights. \nCatalina can serve as a perfect day trip for most pilots\, but for those willing to do the advance planning and safety management. Join us for this unique opportunity to understand Catalina Airport operations\, and how you can fly there safely. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrandan Dadoun is a commercial multi-engine pilot with over 700 flight hours. He has extensive flying experience in both piston and turbine-powered aircraft. Brandan has been part of the SCFC community since 2015 and is currently the SCFC Event Manager where he oversees all Flight Center events\, including its Safety Seminar Program and FlyOutGroup. In 2021\, Brandan was awarded by the FAA for his achievements in promoting aviation safety. Outside of flying and presenting\, he enjoys playing the saxophone and staying active. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Full Moon Flyers Dinner – Lampson Field Airport
DESCRIPTION:This July\, see beautiful Clear Lake from the air with a flight to Lampson Field (1O2)! Lampson is located just south of Lakeport\, and views of the lake can be seen on downwind while in the pattern. The airport is relatively quiet\, and is a great place to practice landings after a cross-country flight. \nAt the airport\, enjoy lunch or dinner with fresh\, local ingredients from Red’s at the Skyroom. This restaurant features West Coast fare with a variety of entrees and drinks for you and your passengers. With patio seating\, this is a great place to replenish after a training flight or as a break on a long cross-country trip to the north. After your meal\, venture around the ramp area to see a collection of vintage aircraft from a variety of eras \nThe airport also has an RNAV approach if you want to practice your instrument skills\, and features 100LL fuel at a self-serve pump. Pilots flying out of this airport should consider density altitude due to the increased elevation and habitually high temperatures seen in the summer months. \nIf you visit Lampson and Red’s at the Skyroom\, please let us know how it is!

SUMMARY:Maintenance Logbooks Made Easy
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will be held in person at SCFC\, attendance is free and open to all. Web Members will still be able to access our seminars online\, both live and recorded. Click here to learn more about the transition. \nInterested in watching more of our presentations? View our growing library of over 500 recorded safety seminars available to view in our Members Only Seminar Library\, available by clicking here. \n  \n\n\n\nAircraft records are significant for safety and legal reasons. Maintenance and inspections are meticulously recorded in more aircraft logbooks\, such as airframe\, engine\, propeller\, and sometimes avionics. Pilots need to understand the details of aircraft logbook entries to validate the airworthiness of the airplane before flight\, especially after the plane has returned from servicing. \nPreparing for a checkride is one instance where the pilot-in-command needs to know every piece of the aircraft’s airworthiness. When was the last annual inspection? If 100-hour inspections are required\, when was the last 100 hour inspection done? Has the work been logged appropriately in the maintenance records. Are all the airworthiness directives complied with? Being able to read and interpret maintenance logbook entries is the only way to confirm the aircraft is airworthy. \nIn this seminar\, join Chief Pilot Herb Patten as he examines aircraft maintenance logbook entries and highlights what you need to pay attention to as a PIC. We encourage any pilot to attend. As pilots\, we are fortunate enough to capture these moments through our own eyes\, but how can we safely photograph these views? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Mark Holtzman\, Commercial Pilot and CEO of West Coast Aerial Photography to share how to capture photos from the sky safely. For most pilots\, taking pictures with our handheld devices may suffice\, yet even then\, safety considerations must be considered. In this seminar\, Mark will share what pre-flight planning elements are required before every photography mission including the importance of two-crew and delegation of photographer and pilot duties\, air traffic control coordination\, and selecting a safe area to transit for photography work. With thorough pre-flight planning\, a photo mission can be extremely rewarding. Mark will conclude his presentation with a showcase of some of his best work from over the years. \nThe world of aerial photography allows us to capture the world from above. We encourage all pilots who have ever taken or plan to take photos from the sky to join in on this presentation. \n \n\n\nMark Holtzman is a California native with over 25 years of experience as both a photographer and pilot. Mark has had a love for photography from a very young age. Similarly for flying\, where at age 17 Mark got his pilot’s license and has been flying ever since. In 2000 he combined his two passions\, aviation and photography to start West Coast Aerial Photography. Since then he has been highly sought for his work across the globe. That information is supplemented by details from your specific Airplane Flight Manual. So what more do you need to know? You crank the starter and everything works. But how does it work and how do the various systems such as the fuel\, induction\, and ignition work together to keep the engine flying? Ever wonder how the fuel flows from the tank to the cylinders? Or what happens when the air intake filter becomes blocked? Or what are the purposes of those tubes coming out of the bottom of the engine? \nAre you ready to take your airplane systems knowledge to the next step? San Carlos Flight Center invites A&P Charles Rudolf for a unique perspective on airplane engines and systems. In this in-person seminar\, you will learn the details of the fuel\, ignition\, induction and more. \nThis in-person seminar will be conducted using a Cessna 172 with the engine cowling removed so you can get an up-close appreciation of the components of a typical\, small single-engine airplane. Space is limited so don’t delay in signing up for this unique experience. You will walk away with a new depth of knowledge that most pilots don’t have \n  \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:FOG Lunch - San Luis Obispo
DESCRIPTION:This July\, venture down the Salinas Valley to San Luis Obispo (SBP) and enjoy brunch at the Spirit of San Luis Restaurant. Known for their California fare\, their omelets\, scrambles\, and hamburgers sample local ingredients and are served alongside an excellent outdoor view of the airport ramp and runways. \nOn the flight down\, travel down via Monterey Bay\, the Salinas Valley\, and then descend over the rolling hills south of the Paso Robles VOR. San Luis Obispo Airport also has a variety of instrument approach procedures\, including an ILS\, RNAV\, and VOR approach. This is a great opportunity to fly down earlier in the morning and log a few approaches for currency or practice with a safety pilot or CFII\, and then treat yourself to some great food afterward. On the return flight home\, treat your passengers to a flight up the Central California Coast if you’d like\, with gorgeous views of Big Sur\, the coastline\, Bixby Bridge\, and more. \nPlease plan to arrive at the short-term transient parking a few minutes before noon\, which is located on the northwest side of the control tower. Leave the ramp\, and the restaurant is a two-minute walk to the north. \nAs always\, please make sure to RSVP and book your plane early! We look forward to seeing you at the Spirit of San Luis! \n

SUMMARY:In-Flight Vigilance: Stall Spins and Weather Product Awareness – CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:This seminar has been cancelled due to a last minute presenter cancellation. Please tune into our next seminar on Saturday\, July 29. \n  \n  \nThis seminar will be held in person at SCFC\, attendance is free and open to all. For this seminar the presenter is unable to present in person\, instead\, he will present virtually to in-person audiences in our classroom. Web Members will still be able to access our seminars online\, both live and recorded. Click here to learn more about the transition. \nInterested in watching more of our presentations? View our growing library of over 500 recorded safety seminars available to view in our Members Only Seminar Library\, available by clicking here. \n  \n\n\n\nAs pilots\, we need to be aware of ourselves\, aircraft\, and things happening around us during every phase of flight. Throughout training\, pilots are drilled into a variety of different areas. Notably\, pilots must safely analyze weather products and stay vigilant in stall and spin awareness. While pilots are taught these things in primary training\, why do these two factors contribute to nearly 25% of all fatal accidents? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Dr. David Strahle\, CFI-AI and national spokesperson to talk about what he believes is the true reason behind the majority of these accidents and how to re-direct future training efforts towards reducing these fatal events. Over the years Dr. Strahle has seen accidents caused by these factors and how they could have easily been prevented. This discussion will revolve around recently identified negative changes to the color representation of NEXRAD images and how to deal with this setback affecting both your iPad and panel mounted systems. He’ll also cover the true reason behind the occurrence of stall and spin accidents. He will conclude how government investigative agencies may have inadvertently steered attention away from the actual factors contributing to these accidents and how we can prevent these accidents from happening again. \nJoin us if you are a pilot who is looking to get back into flying with safety in mind. This will also be of interest for those wanting to learn more about weather products\, aerodynamics\, stalls\, spins and recovery procedures. If you are eager to learn beyond what is covered in the Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge you will appreciate David’s approach to these topics. \n \n\n\nDr. David Strahle is a CFI and Commercial Pilot\, and is a nationally recognized spokesperson who has educated thousands on a variety of different aviation topics. Mainly\, he has been referred to as the “Father of Datalink”\, as Dr. Strahle wrote the initial research papers on transmitting weather into the cockpit in 1969 and continues to provide ongoing assistance in the development of datalink. \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. Have you? Because of the large investment and the risks associated\, buying a plane can be as daunting as buying a small home. What costs should you expect? Will owning save you money over renting? What about buying an airplane with partners? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites aircraft owner Dan Dyer joined by SCFC Owner Alessandro Franco to share the advantages of buying your own airplane. In this seminar\, they will discuss how to choose the right airplane for your mission profile\, how to navigate the purchase process\, and what to consider when inspecting a potential airplane. The challenge of owning an airplane doesn’t end after the initial purchase. With the variety of variable costs and fixed costs\, the cost of ownership can add up quickly. Offset these costs by putting your aircraft on leaseback with San Carlos Flight Center. After talking through leaseback opportunities they will conclude with how being an aircraft owner can help further a pilots understanding of their aircraft and maintenance. \nIf you ever considered purchasing your own airplane and want to hear firsthand about airplane ownership and learn from the experiences of others\, join us for this unique opportunity to become enlightened about airplane ownership. Did you find yourself avoiding great airport destinations because of hesitancy around even mild crosswinds?  Were you taught to believe that landing in a crosswind is a different harder technique than a “normal” landing? \nDan Dyer and San Carlos Flight Center\, the only flight school on the west coast with a crosswind simulator\, is committed to training pilots competence in all landings.  In this seminar\, Dyer will take you step by step through all phases of landings with and without crosswinds\, so that you approach every landing the same way.  With a bit of practice you will land as easy as stopping your car at a stoplight. It’s part of the flight\, no big deal\, in fact it will become the best and most fun part of the flight. \nImagine approaching a landing with the same confidence you have with every landing. In fact you now even enjoy the challenge of a crosswind. Don’t miss out on this seminar to be a better pilot. \n \n\n\nDan Dyer is the founder of the San Carlos Flight Center\, and has built the motto of Safety\, Community\, and Adventure for over 8 years.  Dan was an instructor for 15 years\, accumulated over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics.  Find out more about Dan at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at dan@sancarlosflight.com \n \n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. DESCRIPTION:This seminar will be held in person at SCFC\, attendance is free and open to all. Web Members will still be able to access our seminars online\, both live and recorded. Flying to a new airport can bring a new set of challenges and risks\, along with new procedures. For student pilots trying to branch out of their home airport\, it can be overwhelming to become familiar with local procedures. So\, what airport information is crucial to know when operating at a new airport? What specific things do you need to watch out for? What hot spots or other things may be confusing to a student or new pilot? \nJoin us to discuss local procedures including noise abatement\, pattern operations\, and where to find information for several local Bay Area Airports. Some examples will include PAO\, HWD\, and LVK. He will review common ATC instructions so you can be familiar with what to expect when operating at these airports. After attending this seminar\, students and new pilots will have more confidence in operating safely at local Bay Area airports and understand what to consider when flying to a new airport. \nWe encourage any student pilot to attend\, and pilots of higher rating to attend too. Do not miss out on this seminar\, learn how to gain confidence\, operate safer\, and be on your A game flying to new airports. SUMMARY:What Every Pilot Needs to Know about Aviation Insurance
\n  \n\n\n\nRisk management is a critical aspect of safe flying. Good pilots should always be looking to identify risks affecting the flight\, and find ways to reduce or remove the risk. Risk can never be eliminated\, but our goal is to be prepared for every situation. That last line of defense for financial security in aviation is available through aviation insurance. Whether you are a renter pilot\, aircraft owner\, or commercial operator\, having insurance is a good way to protect yourself financially against unfortunate occurrences. \nSan Carlos Flight Center welcomes Jenna Cooper from Zanette Aviation Insurance to provide an insight into how aviation insurance works to protect you as a pilot. Insurance can often be very complex and overwhelming\, but in this seminar they will highlight the various plans\, methods\, and ways you can assure you will be fully protected in any situation. They will showcase different examples of claims\, plans\, and also focus on different ways pilots can prevent certain events from happening again. \nWhile every situation is unique\, by promoting safety and awareness and being protected through insurance\, every pilot and their aircraft can be covered. We encourage all pilots to attend this seminar. This is a general presentation covering the topic broadly\, so unfortunately we will not be able to respond to individual questions about specific incidents and coverage. \n \n\n\n  \nJenna Cooper\, originally from Fort Worth\, TX\,  joined the Zanette Aviation team in 2013. Jenna is a Senior Insurance Broker with Zanette Aviation and manages the Light Aircraft side of the business including Light Aircraft Owners\, Non-Owned/Renters Insurance\, Small Fleet Rental and instruction\, and Part 91 Operations. \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure.
