SUMMARY:What to Expect Taking the FAA Knowledge Test
DESCRIPTION:Pilots must pass two standardized tests to obtain a Private Pilot certificate – a test of knowledge on a computer\, and a test of flight skills in the aircraft.  In preparing for the flight skills test\, students can refer to the Airman Certification Standards document which specifies in great detail the nature of the flight skills test and the expectations of performance for each maneuver.  However\, preparing for the FAA Knowledge Test is more unstructured\, as it tests knowledge from any of several FAA publications at various depths and understanding levels.  With so many reference sources to digest\, what’s the best way to prepare for the FAA Knowledge Test? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites in 4 pilots who recently completed the FAA Knowledge Test for Private Pilots.  We’ll find out how they prepared for the exam\, and how that impacted their success.  We will ask them what they were most surprised to find when taking the exam\, and what guidance they can share with others preparing to take the test. \n There have been several recent changes to the Knowledge Test so come hear what to expect and refresh your knowledge on some of the aerodynamics topics to help you get the best score. If you’re a student pilot about to take the FAA Knowledge Test and have questions about what it will entail\, we encourage you to join us for this moderated panel discussion about the process. \n

SUMMARY:Shrimp Boats and Corridor-Cakes: How Airspace Got Like This
DESCRIPTION:Modern pilots know airspace in terms of the alphabet system: class A\, B\, C\, D\, E\, and G. Those labels are a relatively recent facade on a beast whose unnatural evolution was written in blood and bitterly contested. \nCFI/CFII Sal Valdes will reconstruct the National Airspace from cloud clearances in the forties to the “all-weather positive control concept“ in the fifties to today’s ADS-B requirements. Over one hundred years\, personal liberty clashes with public safety and separation technology is tragically outpaced by aircraft performance. \nThroughout the talk\, Sal will discuss online government archives that you can use to solve your own regulation mysteries. If you have an interest in history or want to know how we got to the current airspace rules\, join us for this insightful presentation. \nSal Valdes is a CFI/CFII that enjoys diving deep into a subject and completely understanding the details. She enjoys sharing this knowledge with pilots.

SUMMARY:Under the Cowling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:CFI Herb Patten is inviting ground school students for a closer look at airplane engines and systems\, including details of the fuel\, ignition\, induction and more in this in-person workshop. This is your chance to look “under the cowling” in a way that goes deeper than your common preflight inspection. \nAs a pilot\, you learn about airplane engines and systems from the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. That information is supplemented by details from your specific Airplane Flight Manual. So what more do you need to know? You crank the starter and everything works. But how does it work and how do the various systems such as the fuel\, induction\, and ignition work together to keep the engine flying? Ever wonder how the fuel flows from the tank to the cylinders? Or what happens when the air intake filter becomes blocked? Or what are the purposes of those tubes coming out of the bottom of the engine? \nThis in-person seminar will be conducted using a Cessna training plane with the engine cowling removed so you can get an up-close appreciation of the components of a typical\, small single-engine airplane. Space is limited so don’t delay in signing up for this unique experience. You will walk away with a new depth of knowledge that most pilots don’t have.

SUMMARY:Flying Safely At Night
DESCRIPTION:On November 1st\, Daylight Savings Time will end\, and with it comes early nightfall.  For those of us who work a regular 9-5 schedule\, early nightfall means an increase in night flying time.  How current are your night skills? Maybe it’s time to focus on what is different between day VFR and night VFR flight. \nObviously\, less ambient light adds challenges for anything requiring eyesight.  This includes preflight inspection\, taxi safety\, obstruction avoidance\, IMC recognition and avoidance\, cockpit resource management\, and a number of other things.  Most familiar to pilots is probably the differences in landing. The sight picture of a normal approach to a runway is very different with reduced external visual cues from night.  Flashing lights can help or hurt pilot attention and recognition. \nSo should night flight be avoided?  Not necessarily.  Night flight brings with it reduced ATC workloads\, often calmer winds\, cooler temperatures that help performance\, and the ability to spot traffic from farther off.  Your decision about flying at night can be aided by attending a Night Flying Refresher seminar like this one. \n  \n\nHerb Patten is the Assistance Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 4\,000 hours in more than 150 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2024\, Herb was named a Distinguished Flight Instructor by AOPA. \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2023 as a Distinguished Flight School for the third year in a row. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. Our seminars are free to watch when attended in person at our facility in San Carlos but live streaming and viewing recorded seminars are exclusively available to members. Click here or contact an SCFC member service rep at (650) 946-1700 for more information about online access to our web library of over 500 recorded safety seminars and live-streamed content.

SUMMARY:Coast to Coast in 3 days in a New Airplane
DESCRIPTION:SCFC member Didier Serra recently acquired a Cessna 172 G1000. Great news! Now what? \nThe plane\, N268CS\, needed to be flown back from Florida to San Carlos. Didier\, who is a student pilot\, enlisted his CFI\, Graeson Gamoras\, to help ferry his plane back from Florida. This was going to be an amazing experience that needed extensive planning to manage the logistics. On top of just details of cross-country planning there was an added element of validating that this plane was airworthy. \nIn this seminar\, Graeson and Didier will talk about their experience of navigating through Florida weather and how they evaluated the routes to safely arrive at their first stop. What critical checks they completed and documentation that they validated to make sure the plane they were picking up was airworthy. How they spent the days leading up to picking up the plane preparing for the trip. Some of the amazing places they flew over and how they choose their stops. \nWhether you are a new pilot interested in learning about the challenges of flying from Coast-to-Coast or a seasoned pilot interested in hearing about the adventures of another pilot\, join us to hear for the tale of a 3-day Coast-to-Coast flight.
