SUMMARY:Useful Rules of Thumbs for Aviators and How We Came Up With Them
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\nAviators use rules of thumb because they provide simple techniques to solve\, quickly\, possible time critical aviation problems.  Often\, the simple calculations offered in rules of thumb are only approximations of a more complex derivation. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites AGI Michel Vidal-Naquet to discuss how pilots can effectively use these rules of thumb in order to help them both on the ground\, and in the air.  In this seminar\, we will present a number of rules of thumb useful for both VFR and IFR pilots\, and show how they come to be.  We will provide mathematical derivations based on elementary trigonometry principles and high-school level physics.  While the mathematical derivations will appeal to the curious\, all attendees will gain a better understanding of the rules and will\, hopefully\, integrate some into their flying to make them safer pilots. \nIf you are looking to broaden your understanding of the formulas you use while flying\, this is the seminar for you. \n \n\n\nMichel Vidal-Naquet is an advanced ground instructor and an instrument rated private pilot with about 680 flight hours.  He started flying in 2013 after settling in the Bay area to work as a computer scientist and engineer.  His passion for aviation began during his early childhood when his family first took him on international flights.  He brings a scientific point of view to his flying\, and is always learning.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2019 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:Operating at Truckee Airport
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n\n\n\nTruckee Airport is the gateway to Lake Tahoe.  The spectacular views of Lake Tahoe are a short flight away\, but pilots need to be aware of the challenges associated with these flights.  Truckee is settled well above sea level\, located between mountainous terrain and gorgeous vistas.  This location brings variable weather conditions which can pose tricky to manage for new pilots.  While it can be an excellent place to visit\, pilots need to be thoroughly familiar with airport procedures and to know what to expect upon their arrival in Truckee. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Mark Covey\, the Pilot Outreach Coordinator at the Truckee Airport to talk with pilots about terrain\, best routes of travel\, tower operations\, and upcoming ADS-B ground stations being installed near the airport and its impacts on flight.  Truckee is a dynamic airport with noise abatement procedures\, curfews\, seasonal flight considerations such as density altitude\, mountain wave\, icing\, wildlife and much more.  Mark will also briefly touch on some of the things one might want to do in Truckee\, along with the services the airport provides to visiting pilots. \nIf you are looking to plan a trip to Truckee sometime this summer\, join us to feel more safe\, confident\, and knowledgeable on your upcoming trip to Truckee.\n\n\n  \nMark Covey has worked at KTRK for 6 years.  He started out on the ramp and moved into Aviation & community services as Pilot and Passenger Outreach Coordinator.  He is an instrument rated pilot and is currently training for his commercial license. He commonly flies the airport’s 2018 JT-A turbo diesel C172.  He is looking forward to presenting with the pilot community.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:IFR Distilled – The Essence of IFR Flight
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n\n\n\nIFR flying involves juggling many tasks: precise navigation\, controlling the aircraft by use of the instruments\, managing automation\, interpreting and following arrival\, approach or departure procedures\, communicating and complying with ATC instructions to mention a few.  In some phases of flights things can happen very fast.  It is critical to  stay ahead of the airplane while flying IFR.  Pilots can be overwhelmed at times flying under IFR\, but can it be simplified into a few simple checklists and memory aids. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Dave Kramer\, an AGI and commercial pilot who will distill IFR flying down to a few checklists that can be easily memorized and can serve as a basis for IFR flights in many types of airplanes.  Having a solid foundation of frequently used procedures during instrument flying can be helpful to a pilot.  Flying in instrument conditions is already stressful enough and Dave will show how using these checklists can help an IFR pilot ease the workload and minimize the stress. \nJoin us for this seminar and Dave will discuss some of the different ways one might relieve the stress while flying IMC.\n\n\n  \nDave Kramer MD\, an ophthalmologist for over 30 years\, is an instrument-rated\, tailwheel\, complex and high performance endorsed commercial MEL pilot as well as a basic and instrument ground instructor with an interest in weather. He has been flying since 2012\, has over 1100 hours of which over 500 have been in the IFR system.  He also enjoys long cross country flying\, night flying and flying in the LA area.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2019 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:Radio Communications 3: Non-Towered Airport Communications
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n\n\n\nFlying in and out of the many airports in California requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills. And yet\, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training. Usually\, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them\, both good and bad. Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school\, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. \nThis seminar is the third in a series of SCFC’s Radio Communication Safety Seminars and focuses on non-towered radio communications. Although Federal Aviation Regulations don’t require pilots to make radio calls at non-towered airports\, it is strongly advised for safety. This seminar will help newer pilots understand the structure of radio calls for non-towered airports and how to improve their own radio skills. \nHerb Patten\, Chief Pilot\, AGI and CFI and Dan Dyer CFI will walk participants through a foundation of non-towered radio communication phraseology and use\, from the basics through advanced. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. \nThis will be an important seminar for pilots struggling with radio communications.  If this is you\, plan to attend.  Build your confidence\, and be the pilot you want to be.\n\n\n  \nDan Dyer is the owner and a CFI of the San Carlos Flight Center.  He has been instructing for 15 years\, has over 4\,000 flight hours\, and is the Bay Area’s local expert in crosswind landing instruction. He is known for finding simple and innovative ways to explain complex topics and regularly speaks on advanced ground school topics.  Find out more about Dan at www.sancarlosflight.com or contact him at dan@sancarlosflight.com \n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center. He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has over 1\,500 hours and flown into at least 120 different California airports. He is co-founder of the Bay Area Student and New Pilot Support Group\, and a board member of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015\, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors. \n  \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Identifying\, Assessing\, and Mitigating Common Flight Risks
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\n  \nEvery flight has an associated risk\, and pilots need to know how to either take on that risk or mitigate it.  However\, when can a pilot notice when that risk is too much?  Will it endanger the flight? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites AGI and CFI James Sloan to discuss practical risk management for all pilots.  In this seminar James will review several different useful frameworks for identifying\, assessing\, and mitigating risks along with sharing common scenarios where those frameworks can be put into practice.  There are many ways a pilot can handle a risky scenario\, nonetheless\, it should not be compensated for the safety of the flight. \nIf you are a pilot that wants to recognize how a risk can affect your flight; or if you just want to be a safer pilot\, join us for this seminar.\n\n\n  \nJames Sloan earned his PPL in 2002 and flew around the East Coast for a few years.  After several years off he joined SCFC in 2017 and has since obtained his instrument\, commercial\, advanced and instrument ground instructor\, and flight instructor ratings. I currently have about 550 hours in single engine airplanes and own 1.6 Cessnas.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:I Just Got ForeFlight Now What?
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nStudents and new pilots are increasingly flying with computer tablets\, and using software that replaces paper charts and documents with the digital equivalents.  These applications\, such as ForeFlight\, are extremely powerful and have a plethora of features.  For a pilot just beginning to use ForeFlight\, the choices and options seem overwhelming.  Valuable features and capabilities can go undiscovered. \nJoin SCFC in inviting Alessandro and Brandan to highlight some of the important first steps to take after downloading ForeFlight\, and how to get started.  In this seminar\, we will cover the most efficient ways to use this helpful software\, along with many of the helpful tools to help with your flight planning.  Some of these include how to set up performance profiles\, weight and balance\, how to use geo referenced charts\, and set up your electronic logbook. After this seminar you will feel confident using one of the most popular EFB’s available to pilots. \n(Note: ForeFlight can be quite overwhelming with features\, but basic Internet connection and iPad operation can also be overwhelming.  While we hope to talk extensively about ForeFlight\, this IS NOT a technical support seminar for basic Internet connectivity and iPad use.) \nIf you are just beginning to explore the features of ForeFlight and want to deepen your understanding on how to effectively use these great tools\, you will want to attend this seminar.  Bring your tablet and show up to discover the best features for new pilots.\n\n\n  \nAlessandro Franco is a Private Pilot and the Director of Operations at San Carlos Flight Center. Alessandro was a recipient of the Upwind Summer Scholarship and has done all of his flight training at San Carlos Flight Center\, including his training towards his Instrument Rating\, which he is almost finished with. \n  \nBrandan Dadoun is a student pilot solo and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator. SUMMARY:Ground School Refresher: Aerodynamics
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAerodynamics is the basis of flying; without a fundamental understanding of lift\, drag\, airfoils and more\, why are you even flying?  While these topics can be quite challenging to master\, it’s the foundation to building an exceptional and knowledgeable pilot. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites SCFC CFI Lukasz Zoromski to talk about how a pilot might go about understanding the fluid environment of aerodynamics.  In this seminar\, we will cover the four forces of flight and their effect on an airframe\, airfoils\, stability in the atmosphere\, load factor\, V Speeds\, performance\, and much more.  After this seminar\, pilots will feel confident knowing that you have refreshed yourself on one of the most difficult parts of aeronautical knowledge. \nIf you have ever struggled with comprehending this material\, or feeling like you need a refresher\, you won’t want to miss this seminar.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nLukasz Zoromski has always been interested in aviation. Ever since going to Oshkosh Airventure as a kid\, he got hooked on airplanes. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin\, he decided to make a career change away from a desk job and began flying with a goal to become a flight instructor. Now that he has achieved that goal\, he strives to help new pilots achieve the same goals in a safe and fun way. New to the Bay Area\, he is looking forward to flying in a new environment and meeting new people.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2019 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:What Every Student Pilot Needs to Know Before their Checkride
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\n  \n  \nIt’s the day that every pilot awaits; the transition from student pilot to certificated private pilot.  For most\, the FAA Practical Test or “checkride” is viewed as a terrifying but necessary right of passage.  A Designated Pilot Examiners (DPE) must test each student thoroughly on their aviation knowledge\, control and mastery of the aircraft\, and risk awareness and judgment.  Even if the student has been perfectly prepared by their instructor\, the checkride is still the unknown and a point of concern.  Let’s change that.  With a guided look in the FAA’s Airman Certification Standards document\, any student pilot can better understand what standards they will be held to and how to ace their checkride. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites local DPE Scott Rohlfing to help student pilots understand what can be expected during a private pilot checkride and learn what they can do to be prepared and confident on their big day.  In this seminar\, Rohlfing will relay what student pilots need to know before the checkride\, and share tips from his previous experiences from other checkrides to make sure the same issues don’t arise on your checkride.  We have also asked him to review the different maneuvers and procedures that a DPE can request from a student pilot during the checkride so they can be ready to tackle anything. \nIf you are a student pilot that wants to be prepared\, confident\, and know what to expect on your checkride; you don’t want to miss this unique seminar.\n\n\n  \nScott Rohlfing is a DPE in the San Jose FSDO District and has conducted over 500 practical tests.  As a Gold Seal Flight Instructor he has given more than 6500 hours of dual instruction to CFIs and pilots of every level.  When not evaluating airmen or providing training\, Scott has been a corporate pilot for 15 years and an active political advocate against the closure of Reid Hillview Airport.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Building My Own Airplane
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\n  \nFlying an airplane is fun\, but building your own airplane will really teach you about airplane systems and airworthiness.  That lifelong childhood dream of building your own safe\, FAA-approved airplane can come true.  The safety of an airplane is a pilot’s top priority\, and so what do you need to know as a builder to be sure that your airplane will stay in the air? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Thomas Carlson\, a Sport Pilot and ELSA (Experimental Light Sport Aircraft) Airplane Builder to speak with the pilot community on the ups and downs of his experience building his airplane.  The experimental build category provides seemingly limitless affordable choices and is where ASTM / LAMA standards are applied in a reasonable and safe way to build planes.  However\, many people can be intimidated by the thought of building their own airplane.  Where do I start?  When can I start?  Why would I want to do this?  Will my airplane even stay in the air?  Airplane builders must take into account all the necessary measures.  In this seminar Thomas will answer all of those questions along with discussing his experiences with choosing\, building\, and soon to be flying a VAN’S RV-12iS. \nDon’t miss out on this opportunity to learn from a fellow aviator how you can safely build the airplane of your dreams.  You don’t have to be an expert craftsman nor a rocket scientist to build\, but there are definitely things to learn from someone who has been through this process before.\n\n\n  \nThomas Carlson is a Sport Pilot and ELSA (Experimental Light Sport Aircraft) Airplane Builder that loves sharing his airplane building experiences with the pilot community.  He is an active member in EAA Chapter 20 and hopes to be flying his Vans RV-12iS soon.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\n  \nYou’ve read about them and maybe had to answer a knowledge test question about them but do you really need to know the details of a DME arc on an instrument approach?  After all\, you are flying with modern avionics with WAAS capability\, VOR approaches are a thing of the past right?  Then it happens\, you are IMC and your destination is below minimums even the LPC and know you need to divert.  You divert to an airport and pull up the approach chart and realize the approach has a DME Arc.  Do you remember how to do it?  What will you do if the GPS and autopilot won’t magically fly the arc for you? \nDo not fear the arc.  In fact\, they can be quite fun and rewarding and will keep you proficient with the basic navigation instruments.  In this seminar\, Brian Eliot will demystify the the DME arc approaches found at Crescent City (KCEC)\, Fresno Chandler Executive Airport (KFCH)\, Tri-Cities Airport (KPSC)\, Yakima Air Terminal (KYKM)\, along with two right here in the Bay Area\, Watsonville (KWVI) and Salinas (KSNS). \nIf you are an IFR or interested VFR pilot\, take advantage of the expert insight offered by Brian Eliot\, IFR resident expert at San Carlos Flight Center.\n\n\n  \nBrian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. SUMMARY:IFR Circle to Land Procedures
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\nCircling approaches present a high workload and can be hazardous.  Nevertheless\, they are a fact of IFR life\, particularly at smaller airports because of surrounding terrain or the high cost of approach development.  Are you ready to handle the challenge? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites AGI and CFI Herb Pattern to explore the “Circle to Land” instrument approach.  In this seminar\, Herb will review the design criteria that cause an approach to be titled for circling only\, when circling minimums are excluded from a chart\, when you can land straight in from a circling approach\, and when you can circle from a straight-in approach.  It’s also crucial not to forget discussing chart notes\, circling restrictions\, and formulating a landing plan based on the approach path and runway layout.  Finally\, we will examine the critical execution of the circling missed approach maneuver. \nAll instrument-rated pilots need to be familiar and confident with these procedures.  You will never know when you are faced with this situation.  Join us\, and re-familiarize yourself with this unique procedure.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Assistant Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center. He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has over 2\,000 hours and flown into at least 120 different California airports. He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015\, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:How Good Instructors Become Great Instructors
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n\n\n\nFlight Instructors help students acquire knowledge\, perfect flight skills\, and learn good decision making.  Quality flight instruction is an important part of building a safe community of pilots.  But not many pilots know about the process of becoming a certificated flight instructor.  Is it okay to fly with a very new instructor?  Should I seek out someone with many years of experience?  What makes the difference between a good CFI and a great CFI? \nIn this seminar\, designed primarily to be viewed by flight instructors\, we will examine the obligations of the role of flight instructor\, and look for ways good instructors can push themselves to improve.  Most importantly\, we’ll show all the important ways that flight instruction differs from being a pilot\, as outlined in the FAA’s Aviation Instructor’s Handbook. \nIf you are a new flight instructor who is passionate about effective instruction and looking for tips to improve your effectiveness\, please join us.  Commercial pilots who may be considering flight instruction as a career may also find value in this seminar.  High-time flight instructors may already know much of these items\, but are welcome to view the presentation as a refresher of what our profession aims toward. \n  \n  \n\n\n\nDan Dyer is Chief Pilot and owner of San Carlos Flight Center and has spent years focusing on effective instruction techniques.  With a degree in Cognitive Science\, Dyer often brings a scientific approach to understand how to train safe and competent pilots.  After years of teaching primary students\, Dyer now spends most of his time helping new instructors become very effective in a very short period of time.\n\n\nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Destination: Columbia
DESCRIPTION:**Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis\, this seminar will only be available for online viewing. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \nColumbia is a history-rich town settled in the Sierra Nevada foothills\, founded in the 1850s during the Gold Rush. The historic downtown area features the largest single collection of existing Gold Rush-era structures in the entire state\, and offers saloons\, merchants\, a tea house\, and much more. The Columbia Airport is an ideal airport to experience non-towered operations\, grass runways\, and the closest you can get to high-altitude airports. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites experienced pilots Amanda Chan\, and Marco Leogrande to share their experiences with flying to Columbia Airport and how to make the trip into a great weekend destination and memorable learning experience for all. The Columbia airport (O22) is located a mere 15 minutes walk from downtown\, and it features a 4600 ft paved runway and a 2600 ft grass runway. An on airport campground\, exclusively for pilots\, offers picnic tables\, barbecues\, campsites\, flush toilets and hot showers. At 2\,121 ft MSL and surrounded by hills\, O22 provides pilots with an introduction to the challenges involved with operating at a higher-elevation airport. This seminar will highlight the steps to help you plan a cross country flight plan from the Bay Area\, and some of the necessary precautions needed while operating at a grassy\, high altitude\, and non towered airport. \nIf you are looking to find an airport that offers a unique challenge for many pilots\, and be rewarded with the beautiful sights of Columbia; don’t miss this webinar. \n  \nMarco Leogrande has been flying with the SCFC since 2017\, and obtained his private pilot certificate in 2019. He has been drawn to general aviation by the adventure and opportunity of visiting California by air. \nAmanda Chan\, a software product manager for a Fortune 500 company\, started flying in 2014 and earned her ASEL private pilot certificate in 2017. She has over 350 flight hours and recently completed training for a high-performance endorsement. \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation thought safety\, community\, and adventure.
