IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n\n\n\nAircraft records are significant for safety and legal reasons.  Maintenance and inspections are meticulously recorded in more aircraft logbooks\, such as airframe\, engine\, propeller\, and sometimes avionics.  Pilots need to understand the details of aircraft logbook entries to validate the airworthiness of the airplane before flight\, especially after the plane has returned from servicing. \nPreparing for a checkride is one instance where the pilot-in-command needs to know every piece of the aircraft’s airworthiness.  When was the last annual inspection?  If 100-hour inspections are required\, when was the last 100 hour inspection done?  Has the work been logged appropriately in the maintenance records.  Are all the airworthiness directives complied with?  Being able to read and interpret maintenance logbook entries is the only way to confirm the aircraft is airworthy.. \nIn this seminar\, San Carlos Flight Center Chief Pilot Herb Patten will examine the aircraft maintenance logbook entries and highlight what you need to pay attention to as a PIC.  We encourage any pilot to attend.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015\, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. However\, with a major international airport\, multiple military bases\, and rapidly shifting weather patterns\, flying in this airspace isn’t easy to navigate. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites instrument rated pilot Travis Bender to delve into Seattle Airspace\, the San Juan Islands\, and different ways a Bay Area Pilot can reach Seattle.This seminar will break up the complex Seattle Airspace into smaller areas so it can be interpreted and flown easily for any pilot hoping to fly in the region. In addition\, we will also discuss proper procedures for many airports\, including SeaTac International\, Boeing Field\, and Renton\, as well as how to handle some of the unique challenges of flying in the region\, such as terrain and weather. Living in a digital age\, pilots should learn to use tools like this to enhance their overall flight planning process. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Russell Bowerman and private pilot Brandan Dadoun to provide a walk-through of how they use ForeFlight to plan a cross-country flight. In this seminar\, they will investigate what it takes to accurately plot checkpoints\, calculate performance values\, and ensure that you as the pilot are familiar with “all available information concerning a flight.”  The presenters will start the session with a sample flight mission so that viewers/attendees can follow along in real-time using ForeFlight on their own device. \nForeFlight offers a wealth of features that can sometimes be overwhelming.  We hope you will join us for this seminar to see a practical aspect of this app towards real-world flight planning.\n\n\n  \nBrandan Dadoun is a Private Pilot and SCFC’s Seminar Coordinator. He has completed the majority of his flight training at SCFC with over 200 flight hours and has extensive flying experience throughout all of California in both piston and turbine powered aircraft. He is actively involved within many aviation programs\, and is currently pursuing his instrument rating. When he’s not flying\, he enjoys playing the saxophone and staying active. \nRussell Bowerman has always maintained an interest in aviation\, visiting aviation museums\, taking sightseeing flights\, and staying up to date on all the newest fighter jets and airliners.  After receiving his Private Pilot Certificate in 2018\, he decided to make a career of it\, attaining his Commercial and CFI ratings. Russell has been teaching and loving it ever since. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n\n\n\nHuman body dynamics are complicated on the ground\, and really interesting when you take them up thousands of feet in elevation.  The reduction in ambient air pressure can cause various impairments that directly affect safety of flight. \nJoin an experienced SCFC CFI as they review important Aeromedical Factors such as the four types of hypoxia\, the impact of medicines and alcohol on the human body\, and how the human eye and mind can be fooled by various spatial and visual illusions.  They will also go over some common over-the-counter medications that pilots might not consider to impair their ability to fly\, but may actually be dangerous. \nCome and join this online seminar in the ground school refresher series to review the impact of flight on the human body and become a safer pilot. \n  \n\n\n\nDerek Vejby is a full time CFI at San Carlos Flight Center\, lifelong San Francisco bay area native and aviation enthusiast. From conducting runway sweeps\, to chasing geese away\, from fixing taxiway lights\, to assisting distressed aircraft\, the Airport Operations team plays a fundamental part keeping the airport running smoothly and safely. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Airport Operations Specialist Michael Dutton to give a behind-the-scenes view on what it takes to keep an airport like San Carlos running. This seminar will cover the routine checks that make up the day-to-day lives of the specialists\, as well as some of the more special occurrences that operations specialists respond to. We’ll examine the training\, equipment\, and responsibilities given to the operations personnel\, along with investigating safety measures implemented to ensure the airport runs smoothly. \nWe encourage any pilot to attend as they can now be more vigilant while operating in and around the airport.\n\n\n  \nMichael Dutton is a commercial pilot with a private rating in helicopters. SUMMARY:IFR Departure Procedures

The process of getting safely from the surface over all surrounding obstacles and up into the safety of the enroute IFR structure\, all while operating at maximum performance configuration\, slower speeds\, and high pitch attitudes can be daunting.  The procedures for getting to altitude and established on a route can be accomplished in many different ways\, and airports have many different published departure procedures.  How do you know which one you should expect? \nIn this safety seminar\, CFI Brian Eliot will review a few of the instrument departure procedures for local Bay Area airports.  He will deconstruct the published procedures and show the most critical safety items\, as well as what to typically expect in common practice.  This program is a must for pilots working on their instrument rating\, or working to stay current with instrument departures. \n  \nBrian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s Assistant Chief Pilot and resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer\, a software developer\, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. With new passengers\, a pilot needs to take many safety precautions. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Young Eagles Chapter 20 Coordinator\, Michael Chang to cover the procedures a pilot must take to safely conduct an EAA Young Eagles Flight. We even will have some aviation-related challenges\, courtesy of our awesome maintenance team. The event will last from 12 PM – 2 PM\, and will feature plenty of distanced outdoor seating for your family. Grab a burger and a hot dog\, see how good your preflight skills are with a preflight challenge from our maintenance team\, and cool down with some amazing ice cream before or after your flight. Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school\, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. \nThis seminar is the third in a series of SCFC’s Radio Communication Safety Seminars and focuses on non-towered radio communications. Although Federal Aviation Regulations don’t require pilots to make radio calls at non-towered airports\, it is strongly advised for safety. This seminar will help newer pilots understand the structure of radio calls for non-towered airports and how to improve their own radio skills. \nHerb Patten\, Chief Pilot\, AGI and CFI and Dan Dyer\, will walk participants through a foundation of non-towered radio communication phraseology and use\, from the basics through advanced. So much that we’ve created a bunch of different kinds of altitude: true altitude\, absolute altitude\, indicated altitude\, assigned altitude\, and two kinds of confusing ones – pressure altitude and density altitude. For many pilots\, this can lead to a mental overload. Many pilots don’t have a working understanding of pressure and density altitude. Are they even real altitudes at all? \nIn this seminar\, SCFC CFI’s introduce and explain the terms “pressure altitude” and “density altitude” and demystifies their meaning. Although the word “altitude” is used\, these are clearly not measures of altitude. In fact\, they are measures of atmospheric pressure and density just converted into units that pilots can understand. Confusing at first\, yes\, but once understood they serve a valuable purpose in determining aircraft performance. \nAlthough few things are as important to a pilot as knowing the performance capability of the aircraft before taking to the skies\, measuring the critical factor – atmospheric density – is not something that pilots can do directly. Instead we use rules of thumb\, conversion factors\, and our best understanding of how elevation\, pressure\, temperature\, and humidity are interrelated. In this seminar\, Tim will discuss what tools you should have and how to use them safely\, along with providing example scenarios based around the limitations of preventative maintenance for pilots. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, CFI Michel Vidal-Naquet will discuss the concept of maneuvering speed\, VA.  There is a general misconception among pilots that flying at an airspeed below the published maneuvering speed will guarantee aircraft structural integrity under full or abrupt deflection of control surfaces.  This misconception was indeed challenged in the aviation community at large\, when an Airbus A300\, American Airlines flight 587\, crashed into a sub-urban area of New York City following the loss of its tail section\, at an airspeed below VA. \nMichel will present the high-profile\, controversial accident\, and will discuss why the misunderstanding Va has been considered a contributing factor to the crash.  He will then delve into the aerodynamic principles and regulation behind the definition of the maneuvering speed\, and will go over how maneuvering speed is actually determined by manufacturers and presented in Pilot Operating Handbooks.   Finally\, he will show how the proper interpretation of VA will help pilots fly safer.\n\n\n  \nMichel Vidal-Naquet recently received his flight instructor certificate and has accumulated over 750 flight hours. Recently\, the Bay Area FlyOutGroup (FOG) experienced an amazing multi-plane trip with overnight stays at both Yellowstone National Park and the Seattle area. Long cross-country trips always challenge pilots to use rigor in flight preparation and planning\, and the Pacific Northwest brings weather that may be new and tricky for pilots from warmer\, dryer parts of the country.  FOG pilots and instructors use trips like these to learn how to safely navigate over challenging terrain\, and operate safely at airports with high elevation or unusual approaches and departures due to obstructions.  We have asked some of the pilots from this year’s trip to recap their journey and share the aspects of the trip that make this the adventure of a lifetime. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites private pilot Gregory Jordan and CFI Daniel Sanchez Ruiz to discuss some of the highlights from the trip which include mountain flying operations\, high density altitude awareness\, positive aircraft control\, and the application of true cross-country flight planning. \nJoin us for a recap of this trip’s learning moments with pictures and videos from all that attended. \n  \n  \nDaniel Sanchez Ruiz is a flight instructor at San Carlos Flight Center.  He began his aviation career with maintenance training in Caracas\, Venezuela\, but quickly moved into flying as pilot.  After moving to the United States seven years ago\, he attained his Commercial certificate\, instrument rating\, and eventually CFI.  He came to SCFC after working at SFO as a ramp agent\, and has trained at Tradewinds Aviation in San Jose. \n  \nGregory Jordan is a 300-hour Private pilot who’s currently working on his instrument rating in the C172 G1000. In this seminar\, they will showcase what to expect on a typical aerobatic flight including the various flight preparations\, safety checks\, and maneuvers performed during flight along with broadening your understanding of the aerodynamic loads placed on an aircraft during aerobatics. They will also cover the different aircraft categories approved for aerobatic operations\, what it takes to fly solo aerobatics\, and how to get started. \nAerobatic flying is an exhilarating experience\, yet not without thorough training and understanding of your aircrafts limitations. Yay\, science! \nPilots inside cockpits moving through space are more often concerned with the task of flying\, what action of the controls causes the aircraft to climb\, descend\, turn\, or remain straight and level.  Our perspective is often focused on our little picture\, on the stuff we touch inside the cabin.  But much can be gained from taking the big picture look at flying\, and especially approach to landing\, from the perspective of an energy scientist.  This is the Energy Management approach to landing. \nIn this presentation\, join SCFC Founder Dan Dyer as he brings us a big picture overview of how energy is created\, consumed\, used\, and transferred in aviation. How can an understanding of chemical\, kinetic\, and potential energy inform our skills as pilots? Which flight control most easily transfers energy back and forth between potential and kinetic? His presentation will cover common flight aspects to consider including operating at high elevation airports\, density altitude\, rising terrain\, and complex airspace. Risk can never be eliminated\, but our goal is to be prepared for every situation. That last line of defense for financial security in aviation is available through aviation insurance. Whether you are a renter pilot\, aircraft owner\, or commercial operator\, having insurance is a good way to protect yourself financially against unfortunate occurrences. \nSan Carlos Flight Center welcomes Carla Zanette and Jenna Cooper from Zanette Aviation Insurance to provide an insight into how aviation insurance works to protect you as a pilot. Insurance can often be very complex and overwhelming\, but in this seminar they will highlight the various plans\, methods\, and ways you can assure you will be fully protected in any situation. All around San Carlos we have airplanes arriving and departing. Scanning for traffic is just part of our normal pilot duties. But have you thought about what else might be around us besides airplanes? Yes\, we are not alone out there. Besides airplanes\, people are falling from the skies\, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are buzzing around us\, and some locations have aerobatic activities. \nIn this seminar\, we will highlight some of these activities\, where thy occur and some ways to keep safe while flying. \n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In this seminar he will provide a general outlook on weather and how it is created\, how the coriolis effect affects weather\, how to detect adverse weather patterns\, fog\, and much more.  Be more confident on your next flight knowing that you have made the right decisions for your flight. \nIf you have ever had difficulties trying to grasp the complexities of weather\, then this is the seminar for you.\n\n\n  \nCollin Korey is a CFII at San Carlos Flight Center with experience flying in both high and low wing aircraft. After graduating from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor’s in Hotel & Restaurant Management\, he got inspired to take flight at the nearby Flagstaff Pulliam airport\, and\, an hour later\, a new career path within aviation was paved. After earning his certificates and ratings in Arizona\, Collin continued working as an instructor for about a year before moving to San Carlos in 2021 to search for more clouds and cooler weather. \n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing. \n  \n\n\n\nYou’ve read about them and maybe had to answer a knowledge test question about them but do you really need to know the details of a DME arc on an instrument approach?  After all\, you are flying with modern avionics with WAAS capability\, VOR approaches are a thing of the past right?  Then it happens\, you are IMC and your destination is below minimums\, even the LPC\, and know you need to divert.  You divert to an airport and pull up the approach chart and realize the approach has a DME Arc.  Do you remember how to do it?  What will you do if the GPS and autopilot won’t magically fly the arc for you? \nDo not fear the arc.  In fact\, they can be quite fun and rewarding and will keep you proficient with the basic navigation instruments.  In this seminar\, Brian Eliot will demystify the DME arc approaches found at Crescent City (KCEC)\, Fresno Chandler Executive Airport (KFCH)\, Tri-Cities Airport (KPSC)\, Yakima Air Terminal (KYKM)\, along with two right here in the Bay Area\, Watsonville (KWVI) and Salinas (KSNS). \nIf you are an IFR\, or interested VFR pilot\, take advantage of the expert insight offered by Brian Eliot\, IFR resident expert at San Carlos Flight Center.\n\n\n\nBrian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. He has been flying since 1995 and received all his training in the Bay Area. Brian previously worked as a broadcast engineer\, a software developer\, and taught computer science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
