SUMMARY:I Just Got ForeFlight\, Now What? A Beginners Guide to ForeFlight
DESCRIPTION:Students and new pilots are increasingly flying with computer tablets\, and using software that replaces paper charts and documents with the digital equivalents. These applications\, such as ForeFlight\, are extremely powerful and have a plethora of features. For a pilot just beginning to use ForeFlight\, the choices and options seem overwhelming. Valuable features and capabilities can go undiscovered. \nJoin Herb Patten\, SCFC’s Assistant Chief Pilot\, to highlight some of the important first steps to take after downloading ForeFlight\, and how to get started. In this seminar\, he will cover a basic introduction to the application including the most efficient ways to use the software. With so many different customizations\, subscription plans\, and ways to do the same thing\, it can be overwhelming for many. Some of these include how to set up performance profiles\, weight and balance\, how to use geo referenced charts\, and set up your electronic logbook. After this seminar you will feel confident in your basic abilities to navigate the application and have the resources to continue to learn from. \nForeFlight can be quite overwhelming with features\, however\, due to time constraints we are unable to provide technical support to individual audience members. \nIf you are just beginning to explore the features of ForeFlight and want to deepen your understanding on how to effectively use these great tools\, you will want to attend this seminar. Have your tablet handy and discover this powerful tool available for pilots. \n\nHerb Patten is a CFII and teaches both the Private Pilot and Instrument Ground School at San Carlos Flight Center. Herb has been recognized three times by AOPA as a Distinguished Flight Instructor. \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2024 as a Distinguished Flight School for the fourth year in a row.

SUMMARY:Flying in the Pacific Northwest and Canada
DESCRIPTION:The Pacific Northwest is a hub of aviation industry and innovation\, and what better way to experience this cosmopolitan region than in the air? However\, with a major international airport\, multiple military bases\, an international border\, and rapidly shifting weather patterns\, flying in this airspace isn’t easy to navigate. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites CFI Herb Patten to delve into Seattle Airspace\, flying across the US/Canada border\, and different ways a Bay Area Pilot can reach the region. This seminar will break up the complex area into smaller areas so it can be interpreted and flown easily for any pilot hoping to fly in the region. In addition\, we will also discuss proper procedures for cross-border flying\, as well as how to handle some of the unique challenges of flying in the region\, such as terrain and weather. Finally\, they will highlight how to fly from the Bay Area to the Pacific Northwest VFR. \nIf you are hinting at flying to Seattle or Vancouver in the near future\, this seminar will help you get there efficiently and safely. It is also a great primer for those attending our FlyOutGroup trip to Seattle and Canada in July. \nHerb Patten is a Senior Instructor at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFII\, an FAA-certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor\, and past SCFC Chief Pilot. He is an instrument-rated commercial pilot who has flown over 3\,500 hours to more than 140 different California airports. He teaches instrument and private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center and is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2025\, Herb was named a Distinguished Flight Instructor by AOPA. \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. AOPA has consistently recognized SCFC in their Best Flight School survey\, most recently in 2024 as a Distinguished Flight School. \nSCFC is committed to promoting safety in general aviation through our regular safety seminars and guest speaker programs. SUMMARY:When the power went out at Night
DESCRIPTION:Flying at night brings spectacular views and usually calmer weather making it an enjoyable experience. At the same time\, night flying adds risks that need to be managed. What happens when the flight doesn’t go as planned? What are some considerations when flying at night? \nHerb Patten\, Senior CFI at San Carlos Flight Center will share an experience from a recent night flight where things didn’t go exactly as planned. During the flight\, a malfunction occurred which caused a loss of electrical power. Herb will describe at what point in the flight he encountered the failure and then share the response and decision making process that followed. He will share the actions that in hindsight were good decisions along with key learnings of what he would have done differently. \nJoin us for this seminar for a discussion of how the issue presented itself\, what were the factors that lead up to the failure\, immediate steps that were taken followed by developing a set of contingencies and finally the root causes of the failure. SUMMARY:Radio Communication for IFR
DESCRIPTION:Beginning instrument training brings new challenges including new radio procedures. Flying through in the many airspaces of California requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills. And yet\, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training. Usually\, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them\, both good and bad.  Although some radio techniques are covered in training\, rarely do instrument pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites senior CFI Herb Patten to show how to perfect your communication and phraseology. They will cover radio phraseology from the basics through advanced ATC services with emphasis on practice approaches as well as full IFR communication. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. \nIf you are interested in becoming better at your radio\, you don’t want to miss this seminar. \nHerb Patten is a Senior Instructor at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFII\, an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor\, and past SCFC Chief Pilot. He is a instrument-rated commercial pilot that has flown over 2\,500 hours to more than 130 different California airports. He teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center\, and is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2023\, Herb was named a Distinguished Flight Instructor by AOPA. \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Real Mechanic Explanation of Airworthiness Directive (AD)
DESCRIPTION:Most pilots learn learn a little about Airworthiness Directive (AD) in ground school and then cram for it prior to their practical test. They sit down with their CFI and flip through the airplane maintenance logbooks noting strange numbers such as 84-26-02. Then they cross their fingers and hope the examiner will nod their head when asked if all the ADs have been complied with.   \nSan Carlos Flight Center Charles Rudolf\, Maintenance Manager and IA will dive into the details of ADs that are commonly recurring for typical training airplanes like the Cessna 152\, 172 and Piper Archer.  He will explain the details behind these common ADs including what mechanics do to comply with them as well as why they are important. This seminar will broaden your understanding of this critically important aspect of maintenance. \nCharles earned his A&P in 2021 after attending AIM in Fremont and started working at the San Carlos Flight Center. He obtained his Inspection Authority\, IA\, in 2024. He enjoys the challenge of working on a variety of airplanes. More importantly\, he enjoys sharing his knowledge about airplane systems and engines with pilots.

SUMMARY:Under the Cowling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:CFI Herb Patten is inviting ground school students for a closer look at airplane engines and systems\, including details of the fuel\, ignition\, induction and more in this in-person workshop. This is your chance to look “under the cowling” in a way that goes deeper than your common preflight inspection. \nAs a pilot\, you learn about airplane engines and systems from the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. That information is supplemented by details from your specific Airplane Flight Manual. So what more do you need to know? You crank the starter and everything works. But how does it work and how do the various systems such as the fuel\, induction\, and ignition work together to keep the engine flying? Ever wonder how the fuel flows from the tank to the cylinders? Or what happens when the air intake filter becomes blocked? Or what are the purposes of those tubes coming out of the bottom of the engine? \nThis in-person seminar will be conducted using a Cessna training plane with the engine cowling removed so you can get an up-close appreciation of the components of a typical\, small single-engine airplane. Space is limited so don’t delay in signing up for this unique experience. You will walk away with a new depth of knowledge that most pilots don’t have.
