This airline-born concept can relate to operating general aviation aircraft\, by knowing specific “triggers” and implementing certain “flows” for a smoother operation. In this seminar\, Daniel will provide different scenarios of when these techniques apply by using real\, in-cockpit recordings\, drawings\, and voiceovers to better communicate the importance of checklist discipline. Jarred by the noise\, you slam on the brakes and realize with dread that your wingtip is smashed into a fancy car sitting on the ramp. Questions flood your mind. How can I not see a car sitting there? How will I explain this to my flight club (or my plane partners)? What are the insurance implications of this? \nThankfully\, you attended a ground school refresher seminar on NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) accident and incident reporting requirements and are able to determine if this occurrence requires immediate notification to the NTSB. Join CFI Kyle Smathers to discuss NTSB reporting requirements so that you are the pilot that complies with applicable reporting requirements and not the one who draws the ire of the NTSB. What is that regulation about IFR currency and what are the specifics? \nJoin Herb Patten\, Chief Pilot at San Carlos Flight Center for this “Devils in the Details” seminar on IFR currency. In this seminar we will take an in-depth look at the regulations instrument rated pilots must follow to maintain their IFR currency. Pilots sometimes remember this as six approaches within the last six calendar months. What counts as an approach? Oh\, and there is something about tracking and holding. What is meant by holding? Can I do these in a simulator instead? \nDon’t let the fog of the regulations put you in a hold. This seminar will clear you for the approach as we descend via the FAA regulations and legal interpretation to clarify some of the ambiguity in the regulations.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. SUMMARY:Normalization of Deviation
DESCRIPTION:Fortunately\, Murphy’s law is usually wrong. What can go wrong usually doesn’t and the outcome is usually favorable. This is a good thing in that usually things work out in life. The problem with this is that the favorable outcomes can cause us to generalize. Since nothing bad happened\, the actions we took must have been correct. For pilots\, who are required to make hundreds of decisions that impact safety on every flight\, this may lead to sloppy thinking. If you did only a 75% complete preflight inspection and nothing bad happened\, you may conclude that only a 75% complete preflight is ever needed. This rationalization is the beginning of the process where a new normal is established that accepts shortcuts to safety and standard operating practices. This “normalization of deviation” is dangerous. \nSCFC invites CFI George Michellgiannakis to discuss this very topic. His seminar will discuss famous examples of normalization of deviation\, how human factors and external pressures combined to\, in time\, create a new norm of behavior with disastrous consequences. He will discuss how common pilot thinking is a contributing factor and present some countermeasures that GA pilots can use to avoid slipping into this dangerous situation. \nNormalization of deviation is a large factor in mishaps so expect an eye-opening discussion where you can reflect on your own habits and practices.”\n\n\nGeorge Michelogiannakis is a NAFI associate master CFI and an instructor/check pilot at the Civil Air Patrol. Do you know what issues are commonly found during 100 hour inspections? Or do you know what the mechanics are inspecting or looking for throughout this process? If not\, you will want to attend this seminar. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites A&P Charles Rudolf to give an overview of what problems are typically found during the 100 hour and how to spread more awareness to pilots. In this seminar he will detail the tasks that are performed in a typical 100-hour inspection\, provide an overview of how to handle discrepancies\, and highlight the common issues that are associated with 100hr inspections. Charles will also relay how pilots can commonly cause wear and tear risking the potential for even further damage on the aircraft. \nBy using real-life examples and pictures\, pilots can be more aware of the most frequent issues present during inspections.\n\n\n  \nCharles Rudolf is an A&P Mechanic at SCFC. SUMMARY:Flying the San Diego “Bay Tour”
DESCRIPTION:Despite what you learn on Day 1 of Private Pilot Ground School\, not every Class B airspace is shaped like concentric circles increasing with altitude (i.e.\, “upside down wedding cake”). Each Class B takes on special shapes and operating rules to protect the flight paths going to and from the anchor Class B airport it protects. Learning to navigate Class B airspace safely requires a study of local landmarks and procedures. \nSan Diego’s Class B environment is a perfect example\, with 2 Class B airports in close proximity – San Diego International and Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Two anchor airports means two Class B surface areas each with its unique shape and commingled Class B airspaces above. VFR pilots enjoying San Diego’s mountain and ocean views need to be very aware of VFR transitions through Class B surface areas\, and the VFR corridors with operational rules. \nSan Carlos Flight Center has invited CFI Ryan Sartor to share his experiences with flying San Diego’s equivalent of a “Bay Tour”\, VFR sightseeing through busy Class B and surrounding airspaces. It may have been awhile since you passed the basic weather theory questions from the FAA Knowledge Test\, and this information is too important to let go stale.  These weather hazards can never be understood enough\, and conditions that could create these weather bad boys should be monitored closely throughout the flight. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites commercial pilot and weather specialist Dave Kramer to investigate the classification and anatomy of thunderstorms\, the conditions for their formation\, and why they are so hazardous to aircraft. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nFlying through in the many airspaces of California requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills.  And yet\, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training.  Usually\, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them\, both good and bad.  Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school\, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Herb Patten\, Chief Pilot and AGI Dan Dyer\, to show how to perfect your communication and phraseology.  They will cover radio phraseology from the basics through advanced ATC services with emphasis on flight following and flight service stations.  This seminar will include many examples on how to recognize bad radio calls\, and how to fix them. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. \nIf you are interested in becoming better at your radio\, you don’t want to miss this seminar.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. During flight training\, stall practice and stall recovery techniques are taught early\, and pilots learn they are something to avoid at all costs. This is a good thing. But there’s so much more to be learned from stall and stall recovery training\, it is worth a deeper look. \nSCFC former Chief Pilot Dan Dyer is passionate about safe and effective early flight training and often stresses the critical role that the first few flights play in establishing overall pilot competency. In his work training new flight instructors\, Dan approaches the stall training section of the private pilot syllabus in a different way\, with a deeper look at the How and Why of stall recovery practice. Pilots trust the G1000 avionics as a reliable source to deliver information while in-flight; but there are many intricacies that many pilots do not know about. Safety requires a full discussion of some specific choices Garmin made in system design\, to prevent encountering something the pilot was preferred for. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites King Air Captain and check airman Ben Taber to discuss the idiosyncrasies related to the G1000 avionics. In this seminar\, Taber will highlight things that pilots should be aware of while operating planes equipped with these avionics. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nAircraft records are significant for safety and legal reasons.  Maintenance and inspections are meticulously recorded in more aircraft logbooks\, such as airframe\, engine\, propeller\, and sometimes avionics.  Pilots need to understand the details of aircraft logbook entries to validate the airworthiness of the airplane before flight\, especially after the plane has returned from servicing. \nPreparing for a checkride is one instance where the pilot-in-command needs to know every piece of the aircraft’s airworthiness.  When was the last annual inspection?  If 100-hour inspections are required\, when was the last 100 hour inspection done?  Has the work been logged appropriately in the maintenance records.  Are all the airworthiness directives complied with?  Being able to read and interpret maintenance logbook entries is the only way to confirm the aircraft is airworthy. \nIn this seminar\, Join Private Pilot Alessandro Franco as he examines aircraft maintenance logbook entries and highlights what you need to pay attention to as a PIC. If it’s your first time\, you may wonder what it takes to create a flight plan across the country\, to fly one of the most challenging arrival procedures\, and most importantly to land safely? \nAs AirVenture 2022 closes in\, San Carlos Flight Center invites Oliver Coolidge\, an experienced Oshkosh Pilot and CFI\, and pilot Obed Han to talk to our local pilots about how to fly safely and efficiently into the “world’s busiest airport”.  For one week each summer\, EAA members and aviation enthusiasts totaling more than 500\,000 from more than 60 countries attend EAA AirVenture at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh\, Wisconsin\, where they rekindle friendships and celebrate the past\, present and future in the world of flight. “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration ” has it all when it comes to aircraft\, you certainly won’t want to miss out. For many\, arriving at Oshkosh is a rite of passage that can only be satisfied by being one of the more than 10\,000 aircraft flying in\, landing at what becomes the busiest airport in the world. Experience AirVenture with us. Your spot along the flightline is waiting for you. \n  \n\n\n\nOliver Coolidge started flying in 1969 and is a retired FedEx captain with over 14\,000 hours of flying. He owns a vintage 1954 Cessna 195 and has a new project with a 1971 Beechcraft Bonanza G33 “straight tail”. He also is involved with the Flying 12 Club which has built their own RV-12. Chapter 20 was recently the recipient of an EAA Ray Aviation Scholarship which has awarded a $10\,000 flying scholarship to a local young aviator. \nObed Han became interested in aviation after taking a Young Eagles flight in 2018\, and is now a student pilot solo. He is an EAA James Ray Scholarship recipient and continues to advance in his training because of it. He is also involved within numerous aviation programs\, including co-founding the local EAA Chapter’s Young Aviators program\, participating in the RV-12 build\, and volunteering as a mentor for VATSIM\, virtually controlling airplanes across the Bay Area and training other ATC candidates.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure. SUMMARY:Path to Getting an A&P Certificate

IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nPilots know first hand how much hard work it takes to earn a pilot certificate.  What many don’t know is that the standards for certification of aviation mechanics is just as high or higher. The process of obtaining an Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic certificate encompasses a thorough curriculum requiring comprehensive ground and practical knowledge. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites A&P Tim Davis to cover what’s involved in getting an A&P license. In this seminar\, Tim will cover how the license is structured\, what the basic requirements are\, and the time and commitment involved. He will dive into what topics are actually covered in the knowledge (written) tests\, and what the skill (oral and practical) tests consist of. There will also be a discussion of the expectations associated with the mechanic certificate\, as well as other\, related certifications that are also available. \nThe safety of flight relies on the competency and awareness of everyone associated with the flight\, beginning with every mechanic who has ever worked on your airplane.  If you are an aspiring mechanic\, or a veteran pilot we hope this seminar will give you a depth of understanding of how rigorous the process is for new mechanics.\n\n\n  \nTim Davis is an A&P and aircraft mechanic at San Carlos Flight Center. Most pilots never even consider flying on floats\, but a whole new world awaits for you and your pilot certificate in the water. A seaplane rating brings a wealth of new experiences for any pilot giving you the freedom to fly in new places with different\, unique aircraft. So are you ready to take to the water? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Commercial Pilot Chris Rimer to speak about his experience obtaining his seaplane rating. In this seminar\, Ron will show the prerequisites for the rating\, provide a training overview\, and highlight the things you can do with a seaplane rating. Additionally he will introduce many of the new concepts specific to water operations. With new takeoff and landing procedures\, step taxi turns\, plow turns\, idle taxiing\, sailing\, docking\, ramping\, beaching\, mooring and more\, there is always something to learn. \nThe seaplane rating can be one of the most rewarding and fun flying experiences for any pilot. If you are interested in learning more about what it takes to add this class\, join us for this seminar.\n\n\n  \nChris Rimer has been a San Carlos Flight Center member since its earlier days\, and a pilot at SQL since 1999 (he earned his PPL at Concord in 1997). He is a commercial single and multi-rated pilot\, and also has a private single engine sea rating to keep things fun. You’ll often see him flying Cessna 182s or his Bonanza A36 around California. He’s presently working toward his ATP and is always looking for opportunities to fly as he works toward that goal this year. He started his career in aerospace working for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach as an engineer\, and dreams of flying the MD-11s he worked on there 30 years ago.\n\n\n  \nSan Carlos Flight Center (SCFC) is the SF Bay Area’s most dynamic flying club\, committed to building general aviation through safety\, community\, and adventure.
