Have recent airspace changes affected the Bay Tour\, and what new implementations will require pilots to take into account? Join CFI Lukasz Zoromski to examine the airspace\, explain the “Bay Tour” and how a pilot can accomplish one in the safest\, simplest\, most enjoyable manner. \nWe’ll review the various overlapping airspaces in the area\, the territories for each local ATC facility\, and the routings most commonly used by Flight Center pilots and suggested by ATC.  You’ll learn what options are available to you even if SQL ATIS has the phrase “San Francisco is not taking surface area transitions.” \nThis is a thorough discussion of the regulations and procedures used in flying a San Francisco Bay Tour through Class B and C airspace. SUMMARY:IFR Low Enroute Charts

VFR charts are filled with ground-recognizable objects to aid a pilot in navigation. IFR charts have almost none of that\, as IFR pilots need to be able to complete the entire flight without visual reference to the ground. As a VFR pilot\, you probably have a general understanding of some of the basics of IFR charts including Victor airways and MEAs\, but there is a lot more information there. Do you know how to decipher MRAs? How about the different types of fixes found along an airway? We will take a close look at some hidden gems of details on the IFR enroute charts. \nSCFC Chief Pilot Herb Patten will present a safety seminar that will help demystify the numbers and markings on the FAA’s IFR Low Enroute Charts and allow pilots to develop a better understanding of the details on these charts. He will explain waypoint and navigational aid symbology\, and describe the various altitudes shown on the charts. This is a valuable safety seminar for new IFR students and a great refresher for pilots that are already instrument rated. \nDon’t miss out on this opportunity for an in depth review of the common and not so common content on IFR charts.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 3.00 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. From national parks to hiking and golf\, your visit will be worthwhile. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Private Pilot Brandan Dadoun to discuss what pilots flying to Palm Springs need to know. New destinations\, especially long cross-country flights\, challenge pilots to expand their skills and adapt to different scenarios. In this seminar\, Brandan will summarize flight planning into the Palm Springs Area at both PSP and UDD airports. Whether it is landing at airfields below sea level\, navigating around towering peaks\, flying over vast deserts\, or flying in unique airspace (TRSA anyone?) There are unique flight planning considerations to consider. Brandan will also place an emphasis on certain weather patterns prevalent within this region\, and how they affected his planned route of flight. SUMMARY:Blades of Glory: What Every Pilot Should Know About Propellers

How perfect does the paint need to be to keep the propeller balanced? If my propeller isn’t completely broken\, do I still need to send it to the shop? San Carlos Flight Center has invited Samantha Bloodhart of Sullivan Propellers for an enlightening and educational presentation to promote awareness of safety related propeller and propeller governor issues. \nSam will review basic propeller knowledge for pilots\, including design differences between the major manufacturers\, fixed pitch vs. constant speed operation\, realistic evaluation of propeller condition before flight\, and the inherent dangers of deferring propeller (or any other aircraft) maintenance. She will discuss some of the common propeller Airworthiness Directives that are owner-operator responsibility (not just mechanics). Finally\, she will explain the differences between overhaul\, dynamic balancing\, and other major types of propeller/governor service.  This is all supported with numerous photos and years of anecdotes (some amusing and some amazing). \nPropellers are an essential part of flight\, and pilots should gain a better understanding about them. If you want to gain more knowledge about what keeps you flying\, we encourage all pilots to attend.\n\n\n  \nSamantha Bloodhart moved to the Bay Area in 1994 from Ohio to open Sullivan Propeller Specialists with her partner Brian Sullivan. Sullivan Propeller has been in business in Hayward since we opened\, now 23 years. She is a licensed FAA Repairman. Currently she is the voice of Sullivan Propeller – handling most of the administrative tasks as well as front-line on customer service. Samantha is also the primary administrator for our Repair Station and handles all the FAA requirements/compliance issues as such. Jarred by the noise\, you slam on the brakes and realize with dread that your wingtip is smashed into a fancy car sitting on the ramp. Questions flood your mind. How can I not see a car sitting there? How will I explain this to my flight club (or my plane partners)? What are the insurance implications of this? \nThankfully\, you attended a ground school refresher seminar on NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) accident and incident reporting requirements and are able to determine if this occurrence requires immediate notification to the NTSB. Join CFI Kyle Smathers to discuss NTSB reporting requirements so that you are the pilot that complies with applicable reporting requirements and not the one who draws the ire of the NTSB. What is that regulation about IFR currency and what are the specifics? \nJoin Herb Patten\, Chief Pilot at San Carlos Flight Center for this “Devils in the Details” seminar on IFR currency. In this seminar we will take an in-depth look at the regulations instrument rated pilots must follow to maintain their IFR currency. Pilots sometimes remember this as six approaches within the last six calendar months. What counts as an approach? Oh\, and there is something about tracking and holding. What is meant by holding? Can I do these in a simulator instead? \nDon’t let the fog of the regulations put you in a hold. SUMMARY:Normalization of Deviation
DESCRIPTION:Fortunately\, Murphy’s law is usually wrong. What can go wrong usually doesn’t and the outcome is usually favorable. This is a good thing in that usually things work out in life. The problem with this is that the favorable outcomes can cause us to generalize. Since nothing bad happened\, the actions we took must have been correct. For pilots\, who are required to make hundreds of decisions that impact safety on every flight\, this may lead to sloppy thinking. If you did only a 75% complete preflight inspection and nothing bad happened\, you may conclude that only a 75% complete preflight is ever needed. This rationalization is the beginning of the process where a new normal is established that accepts shortcuts to safety and standard operating practices. This “normalization of deviation” is dangerous. \nSCFC invites CFI George Michellgiannakis to discuss this very topic. His seminar will discuss famous examples of normalization of deviation\, how human factors and external pressures combined to\, in time\, create a new norm of behavior with disastrous consequences. He will discuss how common pilot thinking is a contributing factor and present some countermeasures that GA pilots can use to avoid slipping into this dangerous situation. \nNormalization of deviation is a large factor in mishaps so expect an eye-opening discussion where you can reflect on your own habits and practices.”\n\n\nGeorge Michelogiannakis is a NAFI associate master CFI and an instructor/check pilot at the Civil Air Patrol. SUMMARY:Flying the San Diego “Bay Tour”
DESCRIPTION:Despite what you learn on Day 1 of Private Pilot Ground School\, not every Class B airspace is shaped like concentric circles increasing with altitude (i.e.\, “upside down wedding cake”). Each Class B takes on special shapes and operating rules to protect the flight paths going to and from the anchor Class B airport it protects. Learning to navigate Class B airspace safely requires a study of local landmarks and procedures. \nSan Diego’s Class B environment is a perfect example\, with 2 Class B airports in close proximity – San Diego International and Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Two anchor airports means two Class B surface areas each with its unique shape and commingled Class B airspaces above. VFR pilots enjoying San Diego’s mountain and ocean views need to be very aware of VFR transitions through Class B surface areas\, and the VFR corridors with operational rules. \nSan Carlos Flight Center has invited CFI Ryan Sartor to share his experiences with flying San Diego’s equivalent of a “Bay Tour”\, VFR sightseeing through busy Class B and surrounding airspaces. It may have been awhile since you passed the basic weather theory questions from the FAA Knowledge Test\, and this information is too important to let go stale.  These weather hazards can never be understood enough\, and conditions that could create these weather bad boys should be monitored closely throughout the flight. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites commercial pilot and weather specialist Dave Kramer to investigate the classification and anatomy of thunderstorms\, the conditions for their formation\, and why they are so hazardous to aircraft. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nFlying through in the many airspaces of California requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills.  And yet\, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training.  Usually\, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them\, both good and bad.  Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school\, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites Herb Patten\, Chief Pilot and AGI Dan Dyer\, to show how to perfect your communication and phraseology.  They will cover radio phraseology from the basics through advanced ATC services with emphasis on flight following and flight service stations.  This seminar will include many examples on how to recognize bad radio calls\, and how to fix them. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. \nIf you are interested in becoming better at your radio\, you don’t want to miss this seminar.\n\n\n  \nHerb Patten is the Chief Pilot at the San Carlos Flight Center\, a CFI and an FAA certificated advanced and instrument ground instructor who teaches private pilot ground school at San Carlos Flight Center.  He is a commercial pilot with an instrument rating\, has flown over 1\,500 hours into at least 120 different California airports.  He is the current chairman of the Upwind Foundation\, famous for its Upwind Summer Scholarship Program. In 2015\, Herb was named a Master Instructor by the National Association of Flight Instructors. \n  \nSid Basu is a CFII\, and MEI with his Commercial ASEL\, AMEL and instrument rating with over 2000 hours total time and over 1500 hours of dual given. What would you do if you had to extend your trip due to WX or mechanical issues? \nSCFC invites Sebastian Schewers\, private pilot\, to share how despite great planning he was confronted with weather conditions that prevented a return flight. He will discuss how his contingency planning had to be called into play when he got stranded due to weather at Shelter Cove. SUMMARY:Understanding the How and Why of Stall Recovery Practice

During flight training\, stall practice and stall recovery techniques are taught early\, and pilots learn they are something to avoid at all costs. This is a good thing. But there’s so much more to be learned from stall and stall recovery training\, it is worth a deeper look. \nSCFC former Chief Pilot Dan Dyer is passionate about safe and effective early flight training and often stresses the critical role that the first few flights play in establishing overall pilot competency. In his work training new flight instructors\, Dan approaches the stall training section of the private pilot syllabus in a different way\, with a deeper look at the How and Why of stall recovery practice. This emphasis on the purpose of stall training and the critical learning elements is as valuable to new pilots as it is to new flight instructors. Dan often approaches fundamental skills in a unique way that challenges pilots to improve their understanding and their skills. \nThis presentation\, while valuable to new students\, is equally informative for existing pilots as it will challenge their understanding of aircraft control and stability. With so many different types of lighting systems\, colors\, and positions\, do you really know their significance? \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites CFII Brian Eliot to discuss the different types of approach lighting systems available at airports. Approach lighting systems guide pilots to safe landings in all weather\, but particularly in inclement weather and instrument approaches to minimums. Approach lights have multiple design characteristics to aid in the transition from instrument to visual flight. Their successful use depends on the pilot’s knowing their layout and ability to identify them during an approach briefing. In this seminar\, learn about the different types of approach lighting systems\, how they work\, and the importance they serve to pilots. \nWe encourage all instrument-rated pilots and those who are in training to attend this often under-taught subject matter. \n \n\n\nBrian Eliot is San Carlos Flight Center’s Assistant Chief Pilot and resident expert for IFR training and Garmin G1000 avionics. You have learned a bit more\, but it may have been a while. In this Ground School Refresher\, we’ll take a new and fresh look at the fundamental flight instruments\, pushing maybe a little deeper than you did as a student. Join us for a review and maybe even to learn something new. \nCan you answer these questions? What math is done to calculate altitude in a pressure altimeter? What is the formula used by the airspeed indicator? How can understanding the pitot-static instruments from a mathematical perspective help you troubleshoot instrument failures and faulty readings? Why the heck does the magnetic compass read incorrectly in banking turns? Why doesn’t the heading indicator tumble? In this safety seminar\, an experienced SCFC CFI will answer all of these questions\, along with any others you may have. \nIt is important for every pilot to have an understanding of their flight instruments\, as many pilots rely on them throughout their flights. Join us to learn\, review\, or polish your knowledge on this important topic. \n \n\n\nCollin Korey aspired to be a restaurateur until a thought during an airline flight in Europe formed in his head; “This flying stuff is great\, I wonder if I could do it for a living.” Thus\, on the day after graduating from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor’s in Hotel & Restaurant Management\, he took a discovery flight at the nearby Flagstaff Pulliam airport\, and\, an hour later\, a new career path was paved. However\, with a major international airport\, multiple military bases\, and rapidly shifting weather patterns\, flying in this airspace isn’t easy to navigate. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites instrument rated pilot Travis Bender to delve into Seattle Airspace\, the San Juan Islands\, and different ways a Bay Area Pilot can reach Seattle.This seminar will break up the complex Seattle Airspace into smaller areas so it can be interpreted and flown easily for any pilot hoping to fly in the region. In addition\, we will also discuss proper procedures for many airports\, including SeaTac International\, Boeing Field\, and Renton\, as well as how to handle some of the unique challenges of flying in the region\, such as terrain and weather. Finally\, we will highlight how to fly from the Bay Area to Seattle VFR. \nIf you are hinting at flying to Seattle in the near future\, this seminar will help you get there efficiently and safely.\n\n\n  \nTravis Bender is an instrument-rated private pilot who learned to fly at the Flight Center.  He is actively working on his commercial and CFI ratings\, and leads the Marketing and Events team at SCFC. Pilots trust the G1000 avionics as a reliable source to deliver information while in-flight; but there are many intricacies that many pilots do not know about. Safety requires a full discussion of some specific choices Garmin made in system design\, to prevent encountering something the pilot was preferred for. \nSan Carlos Flight Center invites King Air Captain and check airman Ben Taber to discuss the idiosyncrasies related to the G1000 avionics. In this seminar\, Taber will highlight things that pilots should be aware of while operating planes equipped with these avionics. The G1000 often has airspace lines that aren’t depicted on the MFD\, flight plan entry restrictions\, invalid weather depictions\, no radio altimeters\, and countless other complications while operating under IFR. \nJoin us as you learn about these new things that might’ve never appeared to you while flying this aircraft.\n\n\n  \nCaptain Bennett Taber is a check airman and training captain with over 20 years and 18\,000 hours of air charter experience throughout the western United States. But it comes with increased risk\, and thereby increased responsibility. Every day\, GA pilots who fly in the mountains safely calculate and plan for such risks\, and you can too. \nSpring weather brings cool temperatures\, clear skies and smooth air.  It can also occasionally bring the threat of snow and ice\, which are good things to learn to respect during trips to airports at higher elevations. Join CFI Brian Eliot for an overview of elements of mountain flying. We’ll look at how terrain and mountain weather patterns affect one another and what that means to pilots of small aircraft. We will discuss how to calculate density and what it means for landing and departing at high-altitude mountain airports. SUMMARY:Maintenance Logbooks for Dummies

IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.** \nClick here to learn more about online viewing \n  \n\n\n\nAircraft records are significant for safety and legal reasons.  Maintenance and inspections are meticulously recorded in more aircraft logbooks\, such as airframe\, engine\, propeller\, and sometimes avionics.  Pilots need to understand the details of aircraft logbook entries to validate the airworthiness of the airplane before flight\, especially after the plane has returned from servicing. \nPreparing for a checkride is one instance where the pilot-in-command needs to know every piece of the aircraft’s airworthiness.  When was the last annual inspection?  If 100-hour inspections are required\, when was the last 100 hour inspection done?  Has the work been logged appropriately in the maintenance records.  Are all the airworthiness directives complied with?  Being able to read and interpret maintenance logbook entries is the only way to confirm the aircraft is airworthy. \nIn this seminar\, Join Private Pilot Alessandro Franco as he examines aircraft maintenance logbook entries and highlights what you need to pay attention to as a PIC.
