They could be hard to recognize because of limited ground lighting\, or because the airports themselves tend to create landing illusions on final approach. \nThis will be a unique one of a kind training experience you won’t want to miss if you want\, especially if you haven’t flown at night since you were a student pilot. SUMMARY:Full Moon Flyers: Half Moon Bay (Mezza Luna)
DESCRIPTION:On October 28th\, make the quick hop over the Santa Cruz Mountains to Half Moon Bay for dinner. The flight is quick from points around the Bay Area but is much faster and less stressful than navigating the traffic on Highway 92. This is a perfect flight to take friends and family on\, as it affords stunning views of the local coastline\, beaches\, and mountains in such a short flight. \nAfter landing\, taxi to the small ramp on the southeast side of the airport (located southeast of the taxiway that takes you to Runway 30). Secure your aircraft\, and we’ll walk through the gate to meet at Mezza Luna at 7 PM\, one of the best restaurants in the town. Enjoy an Italian dinner\, complete with classic favorites like pasta and freshly-caught seafood. \nWhile October is often a good time to visit Half Moon Bay\, low fog and clouds may prevent VFR traffic from participating. If this is the case\, we will alter our destination to Livermore. DESCRIPTION:This two-day training trip is designed to help California pilots gain experience with popular routes and airports in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. While the primary goal is education\, many participants use the flight time to work toward high-performance endorsements\, C182 checkouts\, mountain checkouts\, or G1000 avionics checkouts. \nTrip Highlights\n– Learn to fly safely over mountainous terrain\n– Learn about high-elevation airport operations\n– Experience some of California’s highest and trickiest airports safely\n– See the beauty of the Sierras and stay overnight in South Lake Tahoe \n \n \n \nThere is a $500 per person non-refundable deposit to ensure interest. This deposit will be applied towards aircraft and instructor time. All pilots will be paired with an SCFC CFI in an SCFC Aircraft. \nAircraft rental and instructor time will be billed upon completion of the trip. With views of the Santa Cruz Mountains\, Silicon Valley\, and Monterey Bay\, the flight down is one they won’t forget. Located just outside Coalinga\, the ranch features a hotel and multiple restaurants\, as well as an excellent lighted runway for pilots to fly in. On Wednesday\, August 30th let’s fly down to the Ranch to have dinner at their signature restaurant. \nThe flight down is varied as it takes you from the urban sprawl of the Bay Area\, across the Diablo Range\, and then an easy flight following the I-5 corridor. You’ll get a view of the ranch from the air before descending for the thin runway that sits just to the south of the restaurant. Upon landing\, we’ll walk to the restaurant together at 7 PM\, where we will enjoy a variety of freshly cut steaks and other dining options. Harris Ranch is regarded as one of the best restaurants for pilots to fly into in Northern California. \nAfter dinner\, depart for a moonlit flight back to the Bay Area. The route is easy\, as you will follow the I-5 interstate until reaching Tracy\, and then from there\, it’s just a quick flight over the Altamont Pass into the Bay Area. If you need to reset your night currency or practice night landings for your next certificate\, Los Banos\, Tracy\, and Byron airports are excellent places to do so. \nImportant: As Harris Ranch’s restaurant is very popular\, please make sure you RSVP no later than August 27th. DESCRIPTION:FOG’s biggest event of the year is back! \nOn the evening of Monday July 31st\, join us at the Stockton Airport (SCK) to continue our yearly tradition of celebrating the Upwind Class of 2023 with a fly-out dinner event.  We invite all pilots to showcase the fantastic General Aviation community to high-school students and their families. Please park around 6:30 PM at transient parking located just south of the airline terminal. If confused of its location\, ask for progressive taxi or look for San Carlos Flight Center aircraft parked on the ramp. Exit through the pedestrian gate and plan to meet up no later than 7:00 PM at Top Flight Grill and Catering inside the passenger terminal. Afterward\, enjoy the twilight flight home. The restaurant has asked for each table to pay as a group instead of individual checks\, please plan accordingly. \nUpwind students will fly with their instructors\, but FOG pilots who are able to will often allow the students’ families to ride along in their aircraft. This is a great way to introduce the families to the aviation community and the incredible people behind it. \nThis is FOG’s most popular event. Last year\, we set the record for the largest FOG event ever. Can we top it this time? \nDue to the popularity of this event and the coordination of rides\, please make sure to RSVP and book your plane early! San Luis Obispo Airport also has a variety of instrument approach procedures\, including an ILS\, RNAV\, and VOR approach. This is a great opportunity to fly down earlier in the morning and log a few approaches for currency or practice with a safety pilot or CFII\, and then treat yourself to some great food afterward. On the return flight home\, treat your passengers to a flight up the Central California Coast if you’d like\, with gorgeous views of Big Sur\, the coastline\, Bixby Bridge\, and more. \nPlease plan to arrive at the short-term transient parking a few minutes before noon\, which is located on the northwest side of the control tower. With patio seating\, this is a great place to replenish after a training flight or as a break on a long cross-country trip to the north. After your meal\, venture around the ramp area to see a collection of vintage aircraft from a variety of eras \nThe airport also has an RNAV approach if you want to practice your instrument skills\, and features 100LL fuel at a self-serve pump. DESCRIPTION:Located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains\, Auburn Airport (AUN) displays a change of scenery from its Central Valley counterparts\, with rolling hills and beautiful pine trees lining the field. Take advantage of the warming temperatures this May to visit this airport and sample the delicious cafe serving both breakfast and lunch during the outdoor dining season. Wings Grill and Espresso Bar is located right next to transient parking on the south side of the ramp and serves pilots both breakfast and lunch. On Sunday\, May 21\, let’s meet up for lunch at Auburn at 12 PM. \nWhile not considered a mountain airport\, pilots should watch the temperatures when operating at Auburn to ensure the density altitude does not affect your flight. If it is warm enough\, density altitude can climb a few thousand feet above field elevation\, so make sure to double-check your performance numbers on takeoff and landing. \nAs always\, please RSVP below\, and indicate if you can take passengers\, so student and prospective pilots can participate\, as well. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a spectacular full moon flight to a popular local favorite located directly at Livermore Airport. \nElevation LVK is located in the airport building next to transient parking. After parking on the ramp under the tower\, walk the short distance to the airport building\, where the restaurant will be. Please plan to be seated by 7:00 PM. With options like fresh fish\, steak\, pasta\, and salads\, there are plenty of choices for everyone. \nSince it’s a short flight\, consider taking your passengers on a sunset Bay Tour before dinner. The views during the cooler winter evenings will be spectacular\, and nothing beats the gorgeous sunsets. After dinner\, you can refresh your night landings at many of the nearby airports\, such as Livermore\, Hayward\, or Oakland on your way home. \nLike other FOG events\, RSVP below\, and please indicate if you are able to take passengers\, so we can allow student pilots and other aviation community members to participate. SUMMARY:SoCal Airshow and Victorville Airport Tour
DESCRIPTION:Update 4/20: The event is full! Registrations are closed. \nJoin the FlyOutGroup on April 21-23 for a very special event! For the first time in FlyOutGroup history\, FOG and SCFC pilots will venture to March Air Reserve Base in Southern California to attend the SoCal Air Show. March Air Reserve Base is hosting the SoCal Airshow\, featuring the US Thunderbirds\, aircraft like the C-17 and F-18\, and numerous military aircraft on static displays. You’ll also have a chance to visit a local airline boneyard and get up-close with jumbo jets like the 747 and 757.  \nBefore the airshow\, FOG pilots will be able to fly into San Bernardino Airport (SBD) on Friday\, April 21st\, where we’ll spend the night in a hotel located nearby. The next day\, we’ll spend all day at the airshow\, where you can explore the exhibits\, tour the flight line\, and be amazed by the airshow in the skies above. The airshow does not require tickets to attend\, and is open to the public. \nOn Sunday\, April 23rd\, FOG pilots may also have the optional opportunity to stop at Victorville Airport (VCV) on the return flight home. Victorville Airport is offering FOG pilots an exclusive tour of the aircraft storage and airliner maintenance facilities on the field. Not open to the public\, this rare tour is being granted only to pilots attending this trip.  \nItinerary \nFriday\, April 21 \n\nFly to San Bernardino (SBD) – arrive by 6:00 PM\nTransfer to your hotel – board vans no later than 6:15 PM\nGroup dinner – 7:30 PM at Riverside Food Lab\n\nSaturday\, April 22 \n\nAll day visit to March Air Reserve Base for SoCal Airshow\nDinner at your own leisure \n\nSunday\, April 23 \n\n8:30 am – board vans bound for San Bernardino\n9:15 am – Depart for Victorville (VCV)\n10:00 AM – Arrive at VCV for boneyard tour\n12:00 PM – Depart at your leisure\n\nHotel \nFOG is staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites Moreno Valley. You can make your reservation at this page. \nCost \n$150 per person (not per plane) includes ground van transportation\, administrative costs\, and trip supplies.
