September 26 (Wed) 7:00pm Stay Seabird Aware While Flying Along the Coast

Event Date:
Wednesday, September 26, 2018 - 7:00pm

“I attended this seminar 2 years ago and I am excited to bring it back to San Carlos Flight Center.  There were so many things I was not aware of such as the breath of the sea bird area, how spectators who get to close affect the birds and simple things I can do as a pilot to help the birds thrive.  And it’s not just about the birds, but also all animals that live along coastal area and how they contribute to the balance of the environment. In my opinion, this seminar is a must” ~ Dave Kramer SCFC Ground Instructor.

Join Wendy Kordesch, Seabird Protection Network Outreach Specialist, as she discusses how California is home to a diverse population of amazing seabirds and how The Seabird Protection Network helps seabirds thrive by sharing tips with coastal and ocean users on how to protect seabirds.

Seabirds gather in large groups on offshore rocks, cliffs and islands, to nest and raise their young. These large colonies are found all along the entire California coast. These seabirds face numerous threats in today’s challenging environment, including:
* Food scarcity ?
* Changing ocean conditions?
* Living their lives in a challenging environment?

Did you know…
Disturbances to seabirds during breeding season can:

1. Scare birds off their nests
2. Dislodge eggs and chicks from nest sites
3. Allow predators access to eggs and chicks
4. Lead to deaths when eggs and chicks are exposed to heat and cold
5. Cause chicks to drown when they are forced to leave the nest too soon.

We can help by giving seabirds the space they need to rest and raise their young.

You can help seabirds and coastal wildlife thrive by

1.   Attend this seminar

2. Take our pledge to help protect seabirds by keeping your distance.  ??

* Pilots: pledge to fly 1000’ AGL over the coast.?
* Boaters: pledge to stay 1000’ from seabird colonies.  ?Steer clear of birds in the water so they are not affected by your presence.  ?
* Coastal users / hikers: pledge to keep 1000’ distance from seabirds and coastal wildlife?
