September 24 (Sat) 12:00pm Meet the Meteorologist

Event Date:
Saturday, September 24, 2016 - 12:00pm

In today's information age, the opportunity to speak with a local meteorologist have gone by the wayside.  Today's plethora of weather tools on the web have really steam-lined gathering weather and preflight information.  But talk to the seasoned pilot of not so long ago and they will be the first to tell you how wonderful and valuable it was to chat with a meteorologist at the local flight service station to get a good feel of the weather and it's current trends before your flight.

San Carlos Flight Center is proud to have Ashley Helmteg and Rick Canepa, who are meteorologist with the Central Weather Service Unit, a National Weather Service Unit at Oakland Center, speak to us on West Coast Weather Hazards in VFR/IFR Flight and Clouds, Fog and Aviation.

Ashley Helmetag, meteorologist at CWSU Fremont. She has her B.S in Aviation Meteorology, and an Air Traffic Control minor from Florida Institute of Technology (2007).  She is currently working on her M.S Aeronautical Science, Aviation Human Factors from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.  She started with the NWS in 2010 right here at ZOA CWSU.  Prior to the NWS she worked with the private sector as an assistant supervisor at a meteorology and flight planning company in Houston, TX.  She is originally from Southern New Jersey and is a huge Philadelphia sports fan. She lives in Milpitas, CA with her husband who enjoys many of the same activities together-- cooking, traveling, backpacking, mountain biking, road cycling, snowboarding, scuba diving, skydiving, and surfing.

Rick Canepa, meteorologist NWS San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey. Rick is originally from Massachusetts with additional residence time in Vermont, and Montana. Rick earned his Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from Lyndon State College, Vermont, in 1993. Rick began his NWS career in Helena, MT in early 1995 where he remained until the office closed 10 months later. Rick then transferred to NWS San Francisco Bay Area/Monterey, CA in late 1995, and then NWS Billings, MT from 1999 to late 2001, and has been with NWS San Francisco/Monterey, CA since late 2001. Rick has been married to his lovely wife for 17 years, and they have two shelter adopted dogs.

To hear these speakers talk is truly a luxury a pilot will not want to miss.
