February 2 (Sat) 12pm - One Rusty Pilot’s Journey Back into Flight

Event Date:
Saturday, February 2, 2019 - 12:00pm

Have you taken a hiatus from flying and are you itching to get back into it after a year? Two years? A decade? More?

Pilots who are away from flying for more than a few months or years often have a hard time regaining their former skills.  Rules change. Skills atrophy. Confidence slips. For pilots who have grown rusty, it may seem daunting to find a path back into general aviation.

Join us on Saturday, February 2nd as Nello Franco, a commercially-rated multi-engine pilot, shares his experience coming back from a 15 year break from his passion.  He’ll discuss the fears and challenges he faced, and what finally convinced him to start a path toward regaining his skills. As someone who successfully made it back, he now hopes to share his insights on the challenging journey back to currency with others who may be as out of currency as he was.  He’ll share both his personal experiences as well as best practices and references for getting re-current and re-proficient.

Whether you’re contemplating coming back from a short or long (or very long) time off from flying, or if you are in the process of coming back, we invite you to come hear about the process as well as one pilot’s experience.

Nello Franco is an Advanced and Instrument Ground Instructor who returned to flying in 2017 after a 20 year break. Now, he is actively flying and recently got his Commercial Single Engine add-on, almost 20 years since his last check ride.  He is currently working toward becoming a flight instructor.

Knight Laird is a flight instructor at San Carlos Flight Center, and joins the club from flying in Colorado and Washington state.
