January 18 (Sat) 12:00 Women Pilots, Whale Watching, and Watsonville

Event Date:
Saturday, January 18, 2014 - 12:00pm

SCFC CFI Sue Ballew regularly organizes social flyout events directed toward women pilots. These great events bring men and women pilots together from the Women of West Valley group, the Santa Clara Valley 99s, and the Santa Clara County Airmen’s Association. We love the collaborative spirit and want to encourage SCFC and FOG members to join the fun. Both men and women pilots are welcome, and ridesharing is encouraged.

This month the group heads south to Watsonville for lunch and whale watching. Meet at Props Restaurant at Watsonville Airport (KWVI) at 12:00pm noon. You can watch the whales either before or after lunch as your planeload desires. PLEASE have one person just fly the plane and the other people do the watching - this can be very tricky especially if several planes are cruising around the area at the same time.

Here's what to do:
Fly south along the coast from Monterey to Point Sur, then go out to sea for one mile, then back north until you reach the Monterey airspace again and repeat as often as you like. Fly at a minimum of 2000’ (to respect the marine wildlife) and monitor 122.75 while in that pattern as that's what we'll all use to transmit - " I see a whale”. Announce your position often if there are multiple aircraft in the area.
